The Helix brand has gotten a lot of attention for its direct-to-consumer mattresses. The brand’s best-selling Midnight Luxe hybrid mattress has been named in several of our guides, including best mattresses for back pain, best mattresses for hip pain, and best mattresses for side sleepers.
Helix changed mattress shopping when it began offering mattresses designed for different sleeping positions. Whether you sleep on your back, side, stomach, or a combination of those three can play a big role in what kind of mattress feels best. “It truly is based on personal preferences, but also on one’s sleep position,” said Ruchir P. Patel, MD, founder and medical director of The Insomnia and Sleep Institute of Arizona. This is especially true for older adults, who are more likely to have arthritis or other chronic pain. “Finding a mattress that really supports their neck, back, and joints is very important for better sleep quality,” said Dr. Patel. “The largest complaint I hear from older patients is their mattress being uncomfortable and not supporting their neck, back, and joints.”
This Helix mattress review takes a closer look at some of the brand’s top sellers, including the Helix Midnight Luxe, the Helix Dusk Luxe, and the Helix Plus, and how Helix mattresses may help ease your pain.
Helix Sleep

- Excellent pressure relief
- Can help ease pain
- Customizable options
- Sleeps cool
Why choose Helix?
Helix makes most mattresses to order, which means you can customize it to your preferences: firmness level, cooling capabilities, and more. The downside is that many of those choices, like GlacioTex cooling or the ErgoAlign zoned support layer, may cost extra. Still, Helix mattresses are priced competitively overall. So even with these extras, the mattress price is similar to (or less than) what you might pay for a comparable mattress from quality brands like Nectar or Saatva.
Helix mattresses were among the top performers in our tests for older adults, especially for side and back sleepers. They were also some of the best mattresses for pain relief we tested, which is why they earned top marks in our roundups of the best mattresses for arthritis, the best mattresses for sciatica, the best mattresses for fibromyalgia, the best mattresses for neck pain, and the best mattresses for a herniated disc.
Every Helix mattress we tested performed well for pressure relief and spinal alignment, as well as cooling. According to Dr. Patel, “A mattress that retains heat, like a foam-based mattress, can result in potentially increasing body temperature, which in turn can impact melatonin release and thus sleep quality.”

Understanding our scoring
Our mattress recommendations are based on our thorough research and testing. We created two scores:
- Accessibility score: A combined score reflecting factors that make it easier for older adults to move around and get in and out of bed.
- Pain relief score: A combined score reflecting factors that help relieve pain while in bed.
The Midnight Luxe: Helix’s best-seller with low-back support
Both the foam and individually wrapped coil layers of this hybrid mattress have extra pressure relief for the low back, which makes it especially supportive for back sleepers. This zoned construction also results in exceptional edge support, making this one of the more durable, accessible, and firm-feeling mattresses we tested.
The Helix Midnight luxe

- Zoned support helps keep spine aligned
- Great pressure relief for the back
- Stays cool at night
- Pain relief score: 4.21/5
- Material: Coils and foam
- Brand firmness rating: 6/10
- Ideal sleeping position: Back, side, stomach
Our experience with the Helix Midnight Luxe
The Midnight Luxe hybrid mattress is the medium-firm option in Helix’s mid-range Luxe line, which is a step up from the Core collection and a step below the Elite collection. All mattresses in the Luxe line come with the option to upgrade by adding an ErgoAlign top layer, which is dense foam with extra low-back support. We recommend this layer, as it did make a difference in how supported our testers felt.

Testers gave this mattress top scores (4/5) for pressure relief in every sleeping position. But when we used a pressure map to test pressure relief, we found the Midnight Luxe was most supportive for back sleepers. Our older adult testers rated the Midnight Luxe as feeling more firm than it actually is (8 vs. 6/10). But despite feeling firm, testers still felt supported and comfortable. “This mattress hugs me gently,” said Chris, a 66-year-old higher-weight back sleeper with sleep apnea and spinal stenosis. “It feels firm but not like I’m lying on a hard, flat surface. I feel the firmness, but I also feel the support.”
Chris loved the pressure relief of the Helix Midnight Luxe, no matter the position. Lying on his side, Chris said, “I don't feel much pressure. I don't feel like I'm lacking support in any area.” Lying on his back, Chris said, “I don’t feel any extra pressure on my lower back or hips. My body feels equally supported all over.” Even lying on his stomach, typically the least comfortable position, felt good to Chris. “My lower back feels aligned for the most part. My spine feels pretty good and I don’t feel any extra pressure.” He also noted that “the extra firmness makes it easy to move about.”

The steel coils and dense foams that give the Helix Midnight Luxe its firmness also help distribute weight evenly, making this mattress durable and supportive from edge to edge. It received a perfect score in our tests for lying edge support. At the same time, the Midnight Luxe has good bounce, which means it is responsive, a plus for anyone with mobility issues who can use help getting in and out of bed. Testers did point out that the Midnight Luxe doesn’t isolate motion well. This means light sleepers may be woken up by their partners’ movements.
The mattress has good airflow, and our tests found that the temperature changed less than 10 degrees F, which means this stays relatively cool at night. The option to add on a GlacioTex Cooling Cover and CoolForce Layer can make it even cooler.
I don't feel any extra pressure on my lower back or hips. My body feels equally supported all over … even closer to the edge.”

Helix Midnight Luxe pros and cons
Pros
- Relieves pressure in all sleeping positions (especially back)
- Has zoned support for hips and low back
- Strong, stable edges
- Durable and responsive
- Stays cool at night
Cons
- Trial period is shorter than some other comparable brands like Nectar and Nolah
- May be too firm for some
- A partner’s movement may wake light sleepers
Who is the Helix Midnight Luxe right for?
The firm, even support of the Helix Midnight Luxe may help anyone with back or joint pain feel more comfortable and move easier. The mattress has good airflow for anyone who prefers to sleep cool, but only average motion transfer, so sound sleepers may be disturbed by a partner’s movement.
I may love it if I: | |
Sleep with a partner | Maybe |
Have chronic pain | Yes |
Feel hot at night | Yes |
Have mobility concerns | Yes |
Sleep in the following positions | Back, side, stomach |
Who should keep looking for their perfect mattress?
- Light sleepers may be more easily disturbed by the movements of a partner, because this mattress is only average at isolating motion.
- Anyone who prefers a softer mattress may not like that the Midnight Luxe feels very firm.
The Helix Dusk Luxe: Helix’s medium-firm mattress from its most popular line
The Helix Dusk Luxe is the brand’s medium-firm hybrid mattress with zoned support for back and stomach sleepers. It has good overall pressure relief, keeps the spine aligned, and cushions joints—all at a mid-range price.
The Helix Dusk Luxe

- Zoned support targets the back and supports the spine
- Designed to support back and stomach sleepers
- Pillow top is soft, comfortable, and breathable
- Pain relief score: 3.85/5
- Material: Coil and foam
- Brand firmness rating: 6/10
- Ideal sleeping position: Side
Our experience with the Helix Dusk Luxe
The Helix Dusk Luxe has a lot in common with the Midnight Luxe. Both are medium-firm options in the same collection at the same price. Both are hybrid mattresses with individually wrapped coils and layers of high density and gel memory foam. The main difference is that the Dusk Luxe is designed to be more supportive for back and stomach sleepers, while the Midnight Luxe was intended to relieve pressure points for side sleepers. In our tests, the two mattresses performed similarly, with the Midnight Luxe slightly edging out the Dusk for pressure relief, even in those positions.
While the Dusk model showed better pressure relief on our pressure map tests in all sleeping positions, testers rated the Midnight Luxe as more comfortable. When lying on his side, one tester, Chris, a 66-year-old higher-weight back sleeper with sleep apnea and spinal stenosis, said he felt “pretty well aligned,” but noted a little more sinkage in his torso, shoulder, and hips. “Those areas still feel supported,” he said. He felt less relief when lying on his back, despite the Dusk Luxe being designed for that sleeping position. “I do feel some pressure,” he said. “Usually at home I use a pillow under my legs to ease pressure in my lower back.”
Any Helix mattress has the option to upgrade with a CoolForce layer of graphite-embedded foam and/or a GlacioTex cooling cover. Our testing found that the Dusk Luxe hybrid mattress stayed cool, with a heat gun measuring less than a 10-degree difference in temperature. “The cover definitely felt cool to the touch before I laid down,” another tester said. “And the texture of the quilt I think helps with airflow and keeps me cooler.”

Unlike the Midnight Luxe, the Dusk Luxe had just average edge support. “I wouldn't say it's slippery or I feel like I'm sliding, but it does have a give to it,” Chris said. “The edges are a little forgiving.”
And like the Midnight Luxe, the Dusk Luxe is only average at isolating motion, which means a light sleeper may be disturbed by a partner moving during the night. “I definitely felt like I was bouncing along with the motion of the other person's movement,” said our tester. “Depending on how deeply I was asleep, I think it had the potential to wake me up.”
Helix Dusk Luxe pros and cons
Pros
- Zoned support keeps hips elevated and spine aligned
- Plush feel
- Stays cool (with optional upgrade)
- Good bounce may help with mobility issues
Cons
- Some higher-weight sleepers may need more back support
- Edges could be stronger
- Movement may wake up sleeping partner
- Features like ErgoAlign support and cooling cost extra
Who is the Helix Dusk Luxe right for?
The Helix Dusk Luxe has good pressure relief overall, especially for the back and side positions.
Its zoned support helps keep the spine aligned and joints cushioned. Innerspring coils provide bounce, helping with movement on the mattress surface. The Dusk Luxe was also above average at cooling with the optional upgrades, so it suits anyone who wants good airflow and prefers to stay cool at night.

Sleep with a partner | Maybe |
Have chronic pain | Yes |
Feel hot at night | Yes |
Have mobility concerns | Maybe |
Sleep in the following positions | Side, back |
Who should keep looking for their perfect mattress?
- Anyone who is easily disturbed by a partner moving in bed because this mattress is only average at limiting motion transfer.
- Higher weight sleepers who need extra support or prefer a firmer feeling mattress.
The Helix Plus: Helix’s mattress for higher-weight people
The Helix Plus is the brand’s hybrid mattress designed for people with a higher weight, but may be a good supportive option for anyone looking for a firm, durable mattress. The Helix Plus was the best Helix model we tested at relieving pressure. Heavy duty steel coils provide sturdy support, even at the mattress edges, and a firmer feel, while also maintaining airflow for a cool, comfortable sleep.
The Helix Plus

- Excellent pressure relief for any sleeping position
- Great pain relief
- Solid construction for improved durability
- Good airflow prevents heat buildup
- Pain relief score: 4.92/5
- Material: Foam and coils
- Brand firmness rating: 7/1
- Ideal sleeping position: Side, back, stomach
Our experience with the Helix Plus
The Helix Plus is designed for higher-weight sleepers, and its superior pressure relief earned it a top spot in our guide to the best mattresses for higher-weight sleepers. But, according to testers, its layers of 8-inch steel coils and dense gel memory foam cushion and support bodies of any weight, in any position.

It actually tied or outperformed both the Midnight Luxe and Dusk Luxe in every one of our tests, despite being the least expensive option. Testers gave the Helix Plus perfect or near-perfect scores for relieving pressure when they were lying on their side, back, and stomach, even if they didn’t normally sleep in that position. “I can't normally sleep on my stomach, but this feels good,” said Patty, a 70-year-old average-weight side sleeper with arthritis. “My lower back doesn't feel arched, it feels straight, my chest doesn't feel too elevated, and my spine feels neutral. There is room for my belly."
The superior pressure relief and cradling memory foam may make this a good choice for anyone who deals with chronic pain or mobility issues. Patty said she felt equally supported, liked the pressure relief, and that the Dusk Luxe didn’t make her arthritis flare up. The Helix Plus has reinforced edge support, and our testers reported that they felt as secure lying close to the edge of the mattress as they did in the middle. Patty has fallen out of bed in the past due to her mattress’ weak edges. She had no problem changing positions on this mattress and said the edges felt very stable. “I feel no difficulty when standing up or sitting on the edge,” Patty said. “I don’t need to use my hands to get up or sit down, and I feel very secure.”
The Helix Plus did exceptionally well in our cooling tests, which is one reason we named it the best cooling mattress for higher-weight people. More research is needed, but there is some evidence that a person’s core body temperature may increase with weight, making this feature especially helpful for higher-weight sleepers.1 “I like how the top doesn't have any extra fabric or stitching to trap heat,” said one tester. “I think that makes it easier to keep air flowing. When I'm lying down I don't really feel heat building up much.”
With this mattress I feel a little bit more ‘on top’ rather than ‘in’ the mattress, almost like I’m floating.”

Coming Soon: The Next Helix products in our testing queue
We are always testing new mattresses and mattress accessories to give you the most up-to-date rankings and reviews. We also routinely retest best-selling mattresses to deepen our understanding and confirm our previous results.
For this Helix mattress review, we tested a range of Helix models. But we purposely didn’t test one line: the Elite line. That’s because Helix Elite mattresses start at $3,749 for a queen, which we think is too expensive. As part of our mission to get products into the hands of older adults who need them, we want to recommend mattresses and other sleep accessories that are not only high quality but affordable.
We will be testing more affordable products from Helix soon. The below are currently undergoing our rigorous testing process. Check back soon for the results:

The Helix customer experience
Helix was among the first “bed in a box” companies that delivered mattresses to your door. The company follows the same model to this day, shipping a compressed, rolled mattress (about the size of a bag of golf clubs, per the Helix website) via FedEx to your home. Shipping is free, but if you want white-glove delivery, where the company hauls away your old mattress and sets the new one up for you, you have to pay an additional fee ($119–$149). Helix does not offer this service itself, but partners with LoadUp. This could be a factor for anyone who may not be able to handle the weight of a compressed mattress or setting up or disposing of their old mattress themselves. For reference, our testing team says they always need at least two people to move mattresses even just a few feet.
While several mattress companies have a longer trial period, Helix offers a 100-night mattress trial and requires you to try a mattress for at least 30 days before returning it. The company does make returns easier by charging no fees.
