We specifically seek this support during our testing, and we confirm it using our pressure map results. Temperature regulation
Temperature can play a role in easing or worsening fibromyalgia symptoms. To determine how well a mattress regulates temperature, we used a heat gun to measure the mattress temperature before anyone lay on the mattress. Then we heated its surface to 90 degrees, since the average temperature of human skin is around 90–94 degrees.5 Next, we let the mattress cool for five minutes and took another temperature reading. - Avoid sleeping on your stomach. “Stomach sleeping increases neck and back strain and will likely result in more discomfort,” said Dr. Bard. Most people find side sleeping to be the most comfortable position, especially if they place a pillow between their knees to decrease pressure on the hips and lower back, she said.
- Use supportive pillows to improve personal comfort and sleep quality. “A full-length body pillow supports the entire body and decreases pressure on hips and shoulders,” said Dr. Bard. But depending on your symptoms and where you feel the least support or most pain, you may also opt for a pillow between the knees to decrease strain on the hips and lower back, a contoured cervical pillow for neck support, or a small lower-back support pillow for back sleepers.
- Try out a memory foam or gel mattress topper for an extra layer of support. These toppers may also help keep the surface of the mattress cooler.
