6 Best Mattresses for Stomach Sleepers in 2025

Without the right support, sleeping on your stomach can strain your spine and worse. Find out what to look for.

Product Resources
  • The overall best mattress for stomach sleepers is the Nectar Premier Memory Foam mattress, because it’s firm yet responsive, contours to support the spine, and does an exceptional job relieving pressure when lying on your stomach.
  • The best mattresses for stomach sleepers range in price from $874—$2,099 for a queen-size mattress.
  • Stomach sleepers should look for a mattress that is on the firmer side (between 7–10), so they don’t sink in too much, which can stress the spine and strain the lower back.
  • Avoiding thicker pillows or even sleeping without pillows can help avoid the neck strain that often happens when sleeping on your stomach.

NCOA supports everyone’s right to age well. So we take the time to research, test, and recommend products that can help you live a healthier life. We’ve spent more than 2,500 hours researching and testing mattresses to give you the most accurate product reviews. To find the best mattresses, we:

Stomach sleepers: Did you know you’re the rarest type of sleeper? Most people will find our guides to the best mattresses for side sleepers or best mattresses for back sleepers helpful, since those positions represent about 90% of sleepers.1 The other 10% are, you guessed it, stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers need a different type of mattress to support how they sleep. Sleeping on your stomach tends to put extra pressure on your back and curve your spine if you don’t use the right mattress.

“No matter your position, a mattress that supports your spine’s natural curve is key,” says Chanakya Jandhyala, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon with RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group and Community Medical Center in Toms River, New Jersey. “Sleeping on your stomach often forces your neck and spine into awkward positions, which can lead to stiffness or discomfort. Stomach sleepers frequently develop neck or lower back pain from twisting awkwardly during the night.”

Finding the best mattress for stomach sleepers can help you get the support you need, improve your sleep quality, and may even help relieve other health issues. “If you sleep on your stomach, you’ll want a firmer mattress to avoid sagging that can strain your lower back,” says Dr. Jandhyala. “I tell my patients to think about both comfort and support when choosing a mattress.” Keep reading for our expert-chosen picks of the best type of mattress for stomach sleepers.

Top features of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers

We looked for the following features when choosing the best mattresses for older adults who sleep on their stomachs:

Pain relief score

Unique to NCOA, our custom-calculated pain relief score indicates mattresses that help reduce pain due to a combination of pressure relief, support, and more.

Good pressure relief

We looked for mattresses that evenly distribute weight and have good pressure relief (at least 3.5/5) for the neck, shoulders, back, and hips. Those are common pressure points when you’re lying on your stomach. Properly supporting those pressure points helps keep the spine straight when stomach sleeping.

Spinal support

Spinal support is important for all sleepers, but especially stomach sleepers, since that position tends to curve your back.

Firmness

Stomach sleepers usually do best with a firmer mattress (6–9/10), which can properly support the spine in a face-down position. This level of firmness prevents the hips from sinking into the mattress and arching the back, which can lead to strain.

Low-back support

Zoned support, or extra support in the middle of the mattress (below the pelvis), adds the support stomach sleepers need to avoid strain on the lower back. We prioritized mattresses with zoned support in the middle third to prevent hips from sinking too much and throwing the back out of alignment.

Understanding our scoring

Our mattress recommendations are based on our thorough research and testing. We created two scores:

  • Accessibility score: A combined score reflecting factors that make it easier to move around and get in and out of bed.
  • Pain relief score: A combined score reflecting factors that help relieve pain while in bed.

Nectar Premier Memory Foam: Best Overall Mattress for Stomach Sleepers

We chose the Nectar Premier Memory Foam as our Best Mattress Overall for Stomach Sleepers because it is firm yet responsive, and contours to support the spine. It earned top scores for pain relief, and one of the best scores for relieving pressure when lying on your stomach. It’s one of the most accessible mattresses we tested, meaning it’s easier to get in and out of. Nectar also has one of the longest trial periods (365 nights) in the industry, and a lifetime warranty.

Nectar Premier Memory Foam

Nectar Premier Memory Foam mattress
  • Excellent pressure relief for stomach sleepers
  • Promotes spinal alignment
  • Stays cool and comfortable
  • Our pain relief score: 4.20/5
  • Accessibility score: 4.06/5
  • Mattress type: Memory foam
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 6.5/10

Why we chose the Nectar Premier Memory Foam as the Best Overall Mattress for Stomach Sleepers

The Nectar Premier Memory Foam mattress has a soft, plush feel. But it offers enough even support to prevent it from dipping down in the middle, which can cause misalignment and lower back pain in stomach sleepers. The middle of its three foam layers is made of responsive support foam. This foam contours to the curve of the back, helping maintain a neutral position for the spine. This support was evident in our tests. The Nectar Premier Memory Foam mattress earned some of the highest scores for pain relief, pressure relief when stomach sleeping, and accessibility.

We also named Nectar’s best-selling mattress the best memory foam mattress for its all-around great performance. Nectar also had above-average scores for motion isolation, which makes it a good choice for light sleepers who may be bothered by a partner tossing and turning, changing positions, or getting up at night.

The Nectar brand has a reputation for quality and excellent customer service, as we discuss in detail in our Nectar mattress review. It offers one of the longest trial periods (365 nights) in the industry, and a lifetime warranty on its mattresses.

Nectar Premier Memory Foam pros and cons

Pros

  • Excellent pressure relief for stomach sleepers
  • Great support in any position
  • Stays cooler than many foam mattresses
  • Limits how much you feel a partner moving

Cons

  • More difficult to move around on than a hybrid mattress
  • Could be too soft for some
  • Cover is not removable

Our testing experience with the Nectar Premier Memory Foam

Testers noted how soft this mattress feels, and rated it as even softer (4/10) than it is (6.5/10). But they reported that it was still supportive, and that they didn’t sink into the mattress too deeply. Sinking in is a common issue with foam mattresses that could be a problem for stomach sleepers. “It's pretty responsive for memory foam,” said one of our testers, Chris, 66, a higher-weight back sleeper with spinal stenosis and sleep apnea. “It has a little resistance when pushing down, but not a lot, and bounces back quickly.” Although people with a higher weight often need a firmer mattress, Chris noted that the Nectar did not sag and still offered plenty of support even in his non-preferred sleep position. “It felt really good on my stomach because it is so soft. My body is able to sink enough that my spine feels aligned. If you are a stomach sleeper, you would probably like this mattress due to how contouring it is.”

Like all Nectar’s memory foam mattresses, the Premier has three layers of foam. The top layer helps with pressure relief, and is one reason this mattress performed well enough in our tests to be named one of the best mattresses for herniated discs. The bottom foam layer provides stability and reduces motion transfer. Testers rated it 4/5 for how well it absorbed the motion of a partner. One tester said, “I can feel the initial bounce, but that's it. The energy of the bounce is absorbed by the bed's foam. I don't think it would wake me up.”

A seismograph chart shows a single spike of motion.
Our seismograph testing shows that this mattress absorbs motion so well that only the initial bounce of a partner getting into bed is noticeable.

In the middle of the Nectar Premier, three inches of support foam help keep your spine properly positioned. Although the Nectar Premier does not have zoned support, that middle layer helps keep stomach sleepers stable. One of our testers said, “It feels pretty supportive and level when I’m on my stomach. It feels comfortable.” Testers also noted that it was “Pretty easy to roll over and move positions,” and that the edge support was so good, they didn’t have to use their hands to help them get on and off the mattress.

A man sits on the edge of the Nectar Premier Memory Foam mattress.
Our tester felt well-supported and didn’t need to use his hands to get on and off this mattress.

Memory foam typically doesn’t do a great job of regulating temperature due to its dense construction, but in our tests, the Nectar Premier registered a temperature difference of less than 10 degrees. Testers rated the mattress’s cooling abilities as 3/5, noting that “The mattress feels nice and cold on the top. I don't feel like there's lots of airflow, but the temperature itself doesn't seem to be increasing more than normal.”

It’s worth noting that the Nectar Premier Memory Foam’s softness may make it difficult to change positions at night. “This mattress is pretty soft, so I have to use more of my heels and arms to roll over easily and pick myself off the mattress,” said one of our testers, Sheila, a 70-year-old average weight combination sleeper. “Even moving from stomach to back, I had to push heavily with my arms.” If you need extra assistance to change positions, we recommend a hybrid mattress like the Saatva Classic.

Who is the Nectar Premier Memory Foam right for?

Because of its high pressure and pain relief scores, the Nectar Premier Memory Foam mattress could be good for anyone who likes the gentle support and cushioning of memory foam. It was also an extremely accessible mattress, so it could be a good choice for anyone with mobility issues. Its exceptional motion isolation makes it good for couples who don’t want to be disturbed by their partner’s movements at night.

Helix Midnight Luxe: Best Back Pain Relief for Stomach Sleepers

We chose the Helix Midnight Luxe as our Best Back Pain Relief for Stomach Sleepers mattress because it has zoned support and a special ErgoAlign layer designed for lower-back support. The added support with spinal alignment when lying on your stomach. This mattress was a top performer in our back and stomach pressure relief tests, and earned high scores for pain relief and accessibility, too.

Helix Midnight Luxe

Helix Midnight Luxe mattress
  • Eases pressure when lying on your stomach
  • Zoned support helps keep the pelvis from sinking and straining the lower back
  • Great pressure relief for the back, especially with ErgoAlign
  • Pillow top is soft, comfortable, and breathable
  • Our pain relief score: 4.21/5
  • Accessibility score: 4.06/5
  • Mattress type: Hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 6/10

Why we chose the Helix Midnight Luxe as the Best Back Pain Relief for Stomach Sleepers

As we mentioned in our Helix mattress Review, the Midnight Luxe is the brand’s best-selling hybrid mattress and is known for its exceptional lower-back support. That’s why it was included in our roundup of the best mattresses for back sleepers. That same support, which comes from special areas of steel coils underneath the midsection, can prevent stomach sleepers from experiencing the kind of sagging that throws the spine out of alignment. The Helix Midnight Luxe also has an optional upgrade called ErgoAlign, a layer of contouring foam that adds even more support for the lower back.

The zoned support of the Midnight Luxe also includes reinforced edges, which gave this mattress some of the best edge support of any we tested. It also earned top pain relief and accessibility scores in our tests. a good feature for anyone experiencing pain or mobility issues.

Helix Midnight Luxe pros and cons

Pros

  • Zoned support keeps stomach sleepers’ hips elevated and spine aligned
  • Relieves pressure in all sleeping positions
  • High pain relief score
  • Stays cool (with optional upgrade)
  • Good bounce may help with mobility issues

Cons

  • Shortest trial period on this list (100 days)
  • May be too firm for some
  • Light sleepers may wake from a partner’s movement

Our testing experience with the Helix Midnight Luxe

Testers loved the support and comfort of the Helix Midnight Luxe for stomach sleeping—even those who never sleep on their stomachs. “My body feels pretty well supported all over,” said Chris, a 66-year-old higher-weight back sleeper with sleep apnea and spinal stenosis. “My lower back feels aligned and not curved. My spine feels pretty good, and I don’t feel any extra pressure.”

Sleeping on your stomach can strain your back without the proper support. A too-soft mattress can allow the hips to sink and the back to arch, adding stress on the spine and other joints. The Midnight Luxe hybrid mattress is the medium-firm option in Helix’s mid-range Luxe line, but our testers said that it felt much firmer (8/10) than the brand's rating (6/10). That speaks to this mattress’s solid construction. It’s made of zoned steel coils and several layers of contouring and support memory foam to provide pressure relief in all positions, but especially for the back. Our testers’ feedback rated the pressure relief for all positions equally high (4.5/5).

The Midnight Luxe’s excellent scores for back support and pain relief are one reason it was a winner in our best mattresses for back pain roundup. Those same benefits shine here.

A pressure map for the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress.
Pressure map tests show the Helix Midnight Luxe’s exceptional low-back support. The more blue you see, the more pressure relief the mattress offers.

The Helix Midnight Luxe performed well across all categories. But our testers found that upgrades, including the ErgoAlign layer for extra low-back support, the CoolForce layer of graphite-embedded foam, and the GlacioTex cooling cover, did make a noticeable difference. “It feels cool to the touch when I run my hands over the top,” said one of our older adult testers. “The quilted part on the top especially feels cool.” Our heat gun test found an 8-degree temperature increase, which earned it a 4/5 cooling score.

The durable construction that gives the Helix Midnight Luxe its firm feel also helps distribute weight evenly, making this mattress supportive from edge to edge, even for higher-weight sleepers. Chris, one of our higher-weight testers, said, “Closer to the edge, I still feel supported, not like I’m going to slip off. It feels even throughout—not like I have more support on the edge versus the center of the bed.” A firm mattress is helpful when you sleep on your stomach, as it prevents sinkage that can draw the spine out of alignment. In our tests, the Midnight Luxe earned a perfect score in terms of lying edge support, but also demonstrated high responsiveness. “It bounces back very quickly,” Chris said. “It's pretty firm and kind of hard to push in, and the material immediately springs back to shape after I remove my hand.” This quality can make moving on the mattress easier, a plus for anyone with pain or mobility issues.

An older male tester pushes down the pillow top of the Helix Midnight Luxe.
Beneath a plush pillow top, the Helix Midnight Luxe is firm and bounces back quickly when pressed.

Testers did point out that the Midnight Luxe was only average at isolating motion from a partner. When testing how much motion testers feel from someone else sharing the bed, one tester said, “I feel like this movement would wake me up. The movement did make my body move, and I bounced slightly.”

It’s also worth noting that the Helix Midnight Luxe has the shortest free trial period on this list (100 days). For a longer trial period, we recommend either the Saatva Classic or Nectar Premier Memory Foam (both have 365-night free trial periods).

Who is the Helix Midnight Luxe right for?

With its firm zoned support for the back and midsection, the Helix Midnight Luxe helps keep the spine aligned and joints cushioned for back and stomach sleepers. Innerspring coils provide bounce, helping with movement on the mattress surface. With cooling upgrades, the Midnight Luxe was also above average at temperature regulation, so it may be good for someone who prefers a cool mattress. It was only average at motion isolation, so if you are easily woken, you may prefer another choice.

The Saatva Classic: Best Overall Pain Relief for Stomach Sleepers

We chose the Saatva Classic as our Best Overall Pain Relief for Stomach Sleepers because it earned perfect scores in our tests for relieving pressure when sleeping on your stomach and had the second-highest pain relief score of any mattress we tested. The Saatva brand is known for its free white-glove delivery (meaning they’ll set up your new mattress and remove your old one for no extra charge), and one of the longest trial periods in the industry (365 nights).

The Saatva Classic

Saatva Classic mattress
  • Perfect test scores for pressure relief on the stomach
  • Excellent pain relief
  • Promotes spinal alignment
  • Our pain relief score: 4.87/5
  • Accessibility score: 4.55/5
  • Mattress type: Hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 6/10

Why we chose the Saatva Classic as the Best Overall Pain Relief for Stomach Sleepers

The Saatva Classic was our top overall pick in our best mattresses review for its all-around stellar performance and quality construction. It’s especially good for anyone dealing with chronic pain, with a pain relief score second only to the Saatva Rx, which costs $1,200 more. You can learn more about Saatva’s other mattresses in our Saatva mattress review.

The Saatva Classic Luxury Firm is the medium-firm option from the brand. It earned top scores for pressure relief in every position, and a perfect score for relieving pressure when lying on the stomach. It was one of the most accessible mattresses we tried. Its stable surface and dense foam rail edges make it easier to get in and out of bed, a bonus for anyone who may have difficulty with mobility due to chronic pain. The Saatva Classic features two layers of coils. The top layer has zoned support, so it is stronger and firmer in the center third of the mattress, exactly where stomach sleepers need support to keep their spine properly aligned.

Saatva Classic pros and cons

Pros

  • Perfect score for stomach pressure relief
  • One of the best mattresses we tested for pain relief
  • Responsive for people with mobility issues
  • Industry-leading free trial period (365 nights) and a lifetime warranty
  • Free white-glove delivery

Cons

  • May not prevent movement from waking a sleeping partner
  • Only average for cooling
  • At 120 pounds, this mattress is on the heavy side

Our testing experience with the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress with a unique double layer of coils. The top layer is made of nearly 900 individually wrapped steel coils that are stronger and firmer in the center third of the mattress, underneath the low back and pelvis.

This zoned support helps keep stomach sleepers from bending unnaturally and reduces strain on their spines. “I feel like I have a neutral spine when lying on the Saatva Classic on my stomach,” said Ruth, 70, an average-weight stomach sleeper with sleep apnea and arthritis. “At home, I usually sleep on my stomach with no pillow, but this mattress feels great with a pillow or without. I am surprised how much I like this mattress. It really supports my middle.”

A woman lying on the Saatva Classic mattress on her stomach
Testers said that they didn’t sink into the Saatva Classic, and their spines stayed straight while lying on their stomachs.

Stomach sleepers can also frequently experience neck pain. “Stomach sleeping requires a person to rotate their neck while sleeping to turn their head to the side to breathe,” said Heather Swain, DPT, founder of Ally Total Physical Therapy in Toledo, Ohio. The Saatva Classic promotes good spine positioning and support to reduce pressure on the neck, but it is more affordable than the Saatva Rx, our top pick for best mattresses for neck pain. The Saatva Classic has a layer of gel-infused memory foam that helps relieve pressure and supports the spine and joints. “I feel very comfortable, and my shoulders and neck feel good,” said our tester Ruth, while lying on her back.. “There is no pressure at all.”

A pressure map reading of a woman lying on the Saatva Classic mattress on her side.
Pressure map testing showed that the Saatva Classic is equally supportive for all sleeping positions.

Testers felt that the Saatva Classic was responsive as well as supportive. “I feel like the mattress helps move my body,” Ruth said. “It springs me and moves with me.” Having a good bounce makes the Saatva Classic easier to move on and switch positions, even for someone with pain or mobility issues. “This mattress feels like it helps my body when getting out of bed,” Rush said. She noted a similar ease with rolling and changing positions: “I didn’t struggle with the fabric or feel the need to use extra effort.”

Another favorite feature was the Saatva Classic’s solid edge support. Testing revealed that the bed’s edges sank only two inches under a weight, one of the best scores we recorded. The less an edge dips under pressure, the more stable you’ll feel sitting on the side of the bed. The Classic has dense foam rails surrounding it for stability. Testers reported feeling secure whether sitting or lying down. “Even with lying and readjusting, I feel supported on the edge,” said Patty, a 70-year-old side sleeper of average weight who’s fallen out of bed in the past due to unstable edges. “If I lay on my mattress at home in this position, I would be on the floor!”

One of the few categories the Saatva Classic didn’t dominate was motion isolation. Its double layer of innerspring coils tends to transfer motion rather easily, so our testers rated it 2/5 and noted that “It was a little jarring when you shifted positions, especially onto your side. I felt a bounce and a little bit of a ripple effect. I definitely think this motion would wake me to the point I'd be annoyed.”

Who is the Saatva Classic right for?

The Saatva Classic has great support for all sleeping positions and a perfect score for relieving pressure for stomach sleepers. It could be a good pick for anyone who deals with pain disrupting their sleep or causing them mobility challenges. Because this mattress scored below average for motion isolation, it may not be the best choice if you sleep with a partner and are easily awoken. It was also average at temperature regulation. So if you prefer a really cool mattress, there are better choices.

The Nolah Evolution: Best for Side and Stomach Sleepers

We chose the Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm as our Best for Side and Stomach Sleepers because it received a perfect rating from testers for stomach sleeping and a near-perfect score for side sleeping. This mattress has zoned support in key areas for both stomach and side sleepers, and promotes good spinal positioning.

Nolah Evolution

Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm mattress
  • High pressure relief scores for stomach and side sleeping
  • Promotes spinal alignment
  • Excellent at absorbing motion
  • Limits heat buildup
  • Our pain relief score: 4.31/5
  • Accessibility score: 3.96/5
  • Mattress type: Hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 6.5/10

Why we chose the Nolah Evolution as the Best for Side and Stomach Sleepers

The Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm mattress earned one of the highest scores (4.5/5) for side sleeping pressure relief, and a perfect score (5/5) for stomach sleeping pressure relief. Its zoned innerspring layer and contouring foam layer balance support and pressure relief in a way that suits both sleeping positions, making it a good option for combination, stomach, and side sleepers.

The Evolution is Nolah’s medium-firm mattress, and the reinforced support helps keep your midsection elevated and reduce lower back strain for stomach sleepers. The Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm also performed as well as many memory foam mattresses for motion isolation, an area where many hybrid mattresses don’t do as well due to their innersprings. It earned high marks in our pain relief tests and was good at limiting heat buildup.

Nolah Evolution pros and cons

Pros

  • Zoned support helps spinal alignment
  • Great pressure relief for side and stomach sleeping
  • Plush topper has a luxurious feel
  • Top scores for motion isolation, so you’re unlikely to feel a partner’s movements

Cons

  • Average at staying cool at night
  • A 15-inch mattress height may require special sheets

Our testing experience with the Nolah Evolution

Testers loved the Nolah Evolution so much that they gave it a perfect score for relieving pressure when lying on their stomachs. “I feel really good on my stomach,” said Sheila, a 70-year-old average-weight combination sleeper. “My chest sinks in enough so I don't feel pressure on my breasts. My body is aligned really nicely, and my spine feels great. My lower back does not have any pressure.”

The Nolah Evolution may feel more supportive and comfortable for side and stomach positions due to its targeted support for joints and contouring memory foam layers that cushion the spine. “I do feel like this mattress hugs your body nicely. I don't feel any pressure around my body,” Sheila said. “This mattress feels comfortable on my side, and I am not a huge side sleeper. I feel like the topper is hugging your body enough while the other layers under offer good support.”

A woman lying on her back on the Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm mattress
Our testers tried the Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm mattress in all sleeping positions and reported feeling supported and comfortable every time.

Nolah offers three firmness levels for all its mattresses, and the Luxury Firm is the medium-firm option (6.5/10). Stomach sleepers generally benefit from a medium to firm mattress so they don’t sink in and create an uncomfortable arch in their lower back. Our testers felt the Nolah was not too firm or too soft. “This mattress is not too hard and I feel comfortable,” Sheila said. Higher-weight sleepers may prefer a firmer mattress.

The Nolah Evolution was also a standout for motion isolation, performing just as well or better than some foam mattresses (it earned 4/5), which lack coils and so tend to be better at minimizing movement. Innersprings can be bouncy, but the Evolution Luxury Firm uses individually wrapped coils and several layers of foam to limit bounciness. When we tested how well the Nolah Evolution absorbed motion, testers said they could barely feel it.“I felt the mattress bounce a tiny bit in my lower half, but my upper half was less affected and more isolated. I didn't really feel the movement in my upper half at all. It bounced my body a little bit, but only my legs and butt. I don't think this would wake me.”

Testers noted that the Nolah Evolution had one of the most comfortable toppers, describing the texture as “soft and silky" and “cozy and luxurious.”

The Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm Hybrid mattress has a plush top.
Testers liked the soft feel of the Nolah Evolution topper, but did note that it may make it more difficult to switch positions.

Testers did note that the plushness of the topper could make it a little harder to switch positions.  “I am struggling more to switch positions due to the soft memory foam topper and quilted texture,” Sheila said. “I feel like it's a little too soft and I’m sinking a little too much in the mattress, and this is why it's harder to turn. I need to use my arms more to move my body.” Testers also rated the edge support as just above average (3/5), so if you have mobility issues, you may want to look for a different mattress.

Who is the Nolah Evolution right for?

For people who prefer an innerspring mattress and sleep with a partner, the Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm was a top performer at minimizing motion. It is supportive for all sleeping positions (especially side and stomach), and earned good pain relief scores. It was only average for edge support and cooling, so if those are features you’re looking for in a mattress, there may be better options.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid: Best Cooling Mattress for Stomach Sleepers

We named the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress the best cooling mattress for stomach sleepers because it earned high scores for pressure relief in the stomach sleeping position and was great at regulating temperature. Its layer of durable 8-inch coils helps distribute body weight evenly across the surface and promotes airflow.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress
  • Great at relieving pressure for stomach sleepers
  • Above average at temperature regulation
  • Promotes spinal alignment
  • Our pain relief score: 3.57/5
  • Accessibility score: 3.59/5
  • Mattress type: Hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 5/10

Why we chose the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid as the Best Cooling for Stomach Sleepers

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress is our choice for the Best Cooling for Stomach Sleepers because of its high marks for stomach sleeping pressure relief and cooling. Its coil construction and breathable natural materials maximize airflow, which may explain why we registered less than a 10-degree increase in temperature in our heat gun tests. There is an option to upgrade to a cooling cover for additional benefits.

The Signature Hybrid also earned a solid 4/5 for stomach sleeping pressure relief in our tests. Its ability to distribute weight evenly helps keep the spine aligned in that position, even though it’s the softest mattress in this article (5/10).

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid pros and cons

Pros

  • Supportive, especially for stomach sleepers
  • Breathable materials promote airflow and regulate temperature
  • Plush, comfortable memory foam
  • Lowest price on this list

Cons

  • May be too soft (5/10) for those who need a firmer mattress
  • Edges could be stronger
  • Cooling pillow top costs extra
  • No white-glove delivery available

Our testing experience with the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

While the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid fared just average in pressure relief for the side and back, it earned a high score (4/5) for stomach sleeping pressure relief. The Signature Hybrid is made with a layer of 8-inch individually wrapped coils that move independently to provide support where you need it and distribute weight evenly. Our pressure map tests showed almost no pressure buildup, especially around the pelvic area—one reason it was among our picks for best mattresses for hip pain. The hip region is where stomach sleepers often feel pressure that can curve your spine, especially with a softer mattress like this one. The Signature Hybrid is a 5/10, on the softer end of medium-firm (the softest mattress on this list).

A woman lying on her stomach on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress to test its pressure relief
When our testers tried stomach sleeping on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid, the pressure map showed no pressure buildup in the hips and pelvis.

For the most part, our older adult testers liked that softness and still felt supported. “This mattress is really good for stomach sleeping because of how soft it is,” said one of our testers, Sheila, a 70-year-old average weight combination sleeper. “As a woman, I need more relief or sinkage on my stomach and for my breasts. My spine feels really aligned, and I feel comfortable.” Sheila did comment that the texture of the topper had “a dense memory foam feel, not a soft plush feel,” and was “a little hard to push in.”

The coil construction also allowed more airflow than memory foam alone, which helped this mattress stay cool. Our heat gun readings found a 9.8-degree increase in temperature after testers lay on the mattress, earning it a cooling score of 4/5. “This mattress feels room temperature or a little colder,” one tester said. The tester did note that another mattress in Brooklyn Bedding’s lineup, the Aurora Luxe, felt even cooler, but that mattress did not perform as well in pressure relief tests. You can upgrade the Signature Hybrid with a GlacioTex cover if you want an even cooler feel.

Testers liked how soft the top of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress felt.

Our testers agreed that this mattress has good bounce, which may help with getting in and out of bed if you have pain or mobility issues. While the motion isolation may not be as good as another hybrid like the Titan Plus Luxe, it could be enough for sleepers who aren’t easily awakened. One tester said that they could sleep through a partner initially getting into bed next to them, but might be disturbed by their partner changing positions at night.

Testers said the edge support on this mattress was lacking, and our tests confirmed that. The edges sank three inches, which is slightly above average. Patty, a 70-year-old average-weight side sleeper who’s fallen out of bed before due to weak edges, wanted more stability. “When sitting on the edge, I feel like I did sink in pretty extensively,” she said. “The mattress collapses in slightly, and the side bulges out. If I was wearing silky pajamas, I am afraid I would slide off. ”

The Signature Hybrid’s motion isolation could also be better. Testers gave the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid a 2.5/5 for its ability to minimize motion that might disrupt sleep. “I might be able to sleep through someone getting into bed, but when [the other tester] changed positions, I could really feel that,” one tester said. “I didn’t get bounced, but the motion did disturb me. It felt like a ripple effect that I think would’ve woken me up.”

It’s also worth noting that Brooklyn Bedding has no option for white-glove delivery. So you’ll be responsible for figuring out the setup and removal of your old mattress. For those with mobility or strength issues, that could be a dealbreaker. We recommend a brand like Saatva that offers this service at no cost. But if budget is your top concern, you should know the Signature Hybrid is the least-expensive mattress on this list.

Who is the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid right for?

We think the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid could be a good fit for anyone who sleeps on their stomach and enjoys a cool mattress at night. It may also work for anyone who has trouble getting in and out of bed or who prefers a soft mattress. Those who are easily woken by their partner’s movements may want a mattress with better motion isolation.

Titan Plus Luxe: Best for Higher Weight Stomach Sleepers

We chose the Titan Plus Luxe as our Best Mattress for Higher Weight Sleepers because its firmness is good for supporting stomach sleepers of any weight and while maintaining spinal alignment. It earned high marks across almost all of our testing categories, including cooling, pain relief, and accessibility. It also has the highest weight limit of any mattress on this list (1,000 pounds).

Titan Plus Luxe

Titan Plus Luxe mattress
  • Highest weight limit on this list
  • Exceptional pressure relief in all positions (especially stomach)
  • One of the most durable and supportive mattresses we tested
  • Good firmness level for stomach sleepers
  • Our pain relief score: 4.6/5
  • Accessibility: 4.3/5
  • Mattress type: Hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 6/10

Why we chose the Titan Plus Luxe as Best for Higher Weight Stomach Sleepers

Brooklyn Bedding designed the Titan Plus Luxe with higher-weight people in mind (it has the highest weight limit on this list at 1,000 pounds). It performed so well across a range of categories that it was our top pick in the best mattresses for higher-weight sleepers roundup.

The Titan Plus Luxe earned a 4.5/5 for its ability to relieve pressure for stomach sleepers, and 5/5 and 4.5/5 for back and side sleeping pressure relief, respectively. This mattress is an all-around great performer. Its durable construction and high firmness mean it is supportive in every sleeping position, and evenly distributes weight to reduce strain on the spine. It uses heavy-duty steel coils that won’t compress easily. That prevents pressure points like the hips from sinking so much that they arch the low back.

The Titan Plus Luxe received above-average scores for edge support and bounce, and was in the top tier for cooling, pain relief, and accessibility. It delivers a great quality for the value (it’s the second-least expensive mattress on this list by $267).

Titan Plus Luxe pros and cons

Pros

  • Excellent pressure relief for all positions, especially the stomach
  • Good edge support
  • Durable construction prevents sinking and sagging
  • Stays cool

Cons

  • May feel too firm, especially for average- or lighter-weight sleepers
  • No white-glove delivery

Our testing experience with the Titan Plus Luxe

This hybrid mattress has a base layer of foam, a layer of 8-inch steel coils, more foam to provide contouring and pressure relief, and a quilted top with gel foam for comfort. While the Titan Plus Luxe is designed specifically for higher-weight people, it may benefit people of any weight who like a medium-firm mattress. The Titan Plus Luxe has a 6/10 firmness, but testers rated it slightly firmer at a 7.5/10. The best mattress firmness for stomach sleepers is usually on the high side to help prevent sagging in the middle, which puts strain on the lower back. The Titan Plus Luxe was great for support in this position.

A woman rolling onto her stomach on the Titan Plus Luxe mattress
Our testers felt supported in all sleeping positions on the Titan Plus Luxe.

Patti, 74, a lighter-weight combination sleeper, said the Titan Plus Luxe had a good mix of comfort and support. “I feel very supported lying on this bed on my back,” she said. “I feel a bit of cushioning but not a ton of sinkage. My back feels nice and supported.”

When lying on her stomach, she said, “With a pillow, it’s perfect. I feel like I can snuggle into the bed, but still get a lot of support at my hips. My lower back isn't bending unnaturally and is pretty straight. I feel no pain or pressure.”

Back sleeping was just as comfortable. “I feel cushion but my spine is staying aligned,” she said. “I feel a very good balance between pressure relief and support. I could lie here forever.”

A woman presses down on the Titan Plus Luxe mattress
One of our testers, Patti, said the firm Titan Plus Luxe keeps their spine straight and well-supported.

Patti also commented on the stability of the edges, giving it a 4.5/5. “The edge feels secure and strong,” she said. “I feel more stable lying down than sitting, but I still feel supported.”

She didn't need to use her hands to get up when sitting and was able to rely on the edge for support with no issue. The firmness even made switching positions and moving around the mattress easier. “It’s very easy to move around on this bed,” Patti said. “I’m not getting trapped in the pillow top.”

Testers said the Titan Plus Luxe was barely above-average (3/5) for motion isolation, something a lot of innerspring and hybrid mattresses aren’t great at. When it came to feeling a partner’s movement, one of our testers said, “I could feel a lot of the movement when the other tester changed positions in bed. I felt like there was a bit of a ripple/bounce that wasn’t completely deadened. I think it would’ve woken me up.”

It’s worth noting that lighter- or average-weight testers may find this mattress too firm. Although it’s only a 6/10 firmness, testers thought it felt firmer at a 7/10. The Titan Plus Luxe also wasn’t great at staying cool. It heated up by 10.9 degrees, which earned it a cooling score of 3/5.

Who is the Titan Plus Luxe right for?

The Titan Plus Luxe scored high on our pressure and pain relief tests, so we think it’s a great fit for higher-weight sleepers or anyone who prefers a firmer mattress. Its firm support may help with joint or back pain, and the great edge support can help those with mobility issues.

Our process testing the best mattresses for stomach sleepers

Our team has spent thousands of hours researching and testing mattresses so you can feel confident in our reviews. We work with experts in sleep, physical therapy, and occupational therapy, so we know what features are most important when searching for a mattress for stomach sleepers.

For this review, we personally tested 30 mattresses identified through our research to offer pain relief. Each mattress was put through a rigorous testing process by older adults with pain to ensure we have real-world data about how they perform.

We considered these important factors when testing the best mattresses for back sleepers:

Pain relief

To calculate pain relief, we used a unique formula measuring how likely a mattress is to ease a sleeper’s pain. The formula takes into account a mattress’s test scores for pressure relief, firmness, edge support, and bounce, weighting them by importance, and taking the total as a sign of how well a mattress will ease pain.

Pressure relief

Our pressure relief score reflects our testers’ experiences on the mattress in the stomach sleeping position and the results shown on our pressure map. The pressure map uses sensors to show how much pressure the body feels when lying on the mattress. Blue and green are great pressure relief; yellow, orange, and red show places where pressure builds up. We looked for high pressure relief scores when lying on the stomach.

Spinal support

For stomach sleepers, especially, your mattress needs to keep your spine aligned. We tested spinal support by having older adults lie on the mattresses on their stomachs and rate how comfortable and supported they felt. We asked them to note how much pressure they felt under their hips, knees, shoulders, and other joints, and whether their spine felt curved or in alignment. We looked for mattresses that had support underneath the middle of the mattress to keep the spine straight.

Firmness

Stomach sleepers generally benefit from a medium to firm mattress because it helps keep the spine aligned and takes pressure off the lower back and neck. We considered both the brand’s firmness rating and how firm our testers felt each mattress was. Anyone with a higher body weight may prefer a slightly firmer mattress, while those with a lower body weight may opt for a slightly softer one. You can check out our best firm mattress guide for more insight.

How much do the best mattresses for stomach sleepers cost?

The mattresses in this guide range from $1,249–$2,398 for a queen size (without discounts). Along with size, factors that affect a mattress’s cost include the materials used in its construction, certifications, and added features such as a cooling layer or pillow top, as well as extras offered by the brand. Extras can include free shipping, white-glove delivery (where a mattress is delivered directly to your bedroom), or a lifetime warranty.

Understanding stomach sleeping and its challenges for seniors

“Sleeping on your stomach is the least recommended position, as it strains the lower back and may cause neck pain,” says Ellen Wermter, FNP-BC, a family nurse practitioner in Charlottesville, Virginia, who specializes in sleep medicine and works with The Better Sleep Council. “Stomach sleepers often experience restlessness due to frequent tossing and turning to find comfort.” But interrupted sleep and back and neck pain aren’t the only health issues stomach sleeping can contribute to, especially in older adults. This position may also impact:

  • Digestive issues: Research has found that sleeping on your stomach can compress the abdomen and possibly disrupt digestion. It is not the best position if you suffer from acid reflux or GERD.3
  • Respiratory issues. “Stomach sleeping can compress your chest, which may interfere with breathing,” said Dr. Jandhyala. There is some evidence that it may help with obstructive sleep apnea, although additional research is needed.4
  • Skin health. One study found that sleeping face-down can cause facial distortion, leading to the development of “sleep wrinkles” over time.5
  • Pre-existing conditions. Older adults may develop arthritis or other conditions that can make finding a comfortable sleep position more difficult, says Ruchir P. Patel, MD, founder of the Insomnia and Sleep Institute of Arizona. You can read more about the best mattresses for arthritis in our roundup.

“Ultimately, anything that either impairs sleep quality or quantity impacts the amount of deep sleep (stage 3) and REM sleep, which can negatively impact brain health, cardiovascular health, weight regulation, mood regulation, immune function, and more,” said Dr. Patel. “The largest complaint I hear from older patients is their mattress being uncomfortable and not supporting their neck, back, and joints.” Finding a mattress that does these things is key to better sleep quality and better overall health for older adults.

Tips for improving comfort while stomach sleeping

“As we age, we tend to settle into a preferred sleeping position,” said Wermter, the family nurse practitioner in Virginia. But, she says, there are some things that can help.

  • Proper pillow use. To relieve neck strain, use a very soft pillow or none at all, Wermter said. Pillows need to support your alignment. If a pillow is too thick, your neck will curve upward too much.
  • Make sure your mattress is supportive. “If the mattress has started to sag or slump or has lost height over time, then it is not providing optimal support,” said Wermter. “This can lead to aches, pains, and nighttime awakenings that fragment sleep.”
  • Listen to your body. Mattresses do not have a “breaking-in period” like new shoes do, Wermter said. “There may be an adjustment period if you are going from one type of sleeping surface to another. But if, after several weeks, someone has not adjusted to the new mattress, it is unlikely to suddenly improve.” That’s when it may be best to consult a health care professional, especially if you have persistent pain or discomfort.

If you’re dealing with joint pain or digestive issues, your sleep position can definitely make an impact, positive or negative. I often see patients whose sleep position is actually worsening their pain.”

— Chanakya Jandhyala, MD, orthopedic spine surgeon with RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group and Community Medical Center in Toms River, New Jersey

Frequently asked questions

What type of mattress is best for stomach sleepers?

The best type of mattress for stomach sleepers depends on your personal preferences. Our testing found that the overall best mattress for stomach sleepers is the Nectar Premier Memory Foam mattress, because it is firm yet responsive, contours to support the spine, and works with any adjustable bed.

How should stomach sleepers sleep?

Stomach sleepers should aim to support their spine in a neutral position by making sure their neck and low back are not arched or in an awkward position. You can achieve this by either not using a pillow or using a very thin one, and ensuring your mattress is firm and supportive enough.

Is a spring mattress good for stomach sleepers?

Yes, innerspring mattresses can help support the spine and take pressure off the pelvis to help avoid straining the lower back.

Is it ok to sleep without a pillow when you sleep on your stomach?

Yes, many experts advise sleeping without a pillow or with a very thin pillow to avoid neck strain while sleeping on your stomach.
