Most of us spend about a third of our lives on a mattress. Yet the idea of researching and shopping for one ranks somewhere between filing taxes and waiting at the DMV on most people's to-do lists. The price tags can cause sticker shock. The endless sea of almost identical white rectangles becomes a blur. And trying to understand industry terms like "zoned support" and "phase-change material" feels like learning a new language. But even though mattress shopping may not be fun, it is important. The quality of your sleep impacts your overall health

A high-quality mattress is important for a good night's sleep, and if you’re experiencing concerns like low back pain, you’ll want a mattress that can provide relief while lasting a long time.1 “It should keep the body stable, reduce pressure in common strain areas, and stay consistent as it ages. A good mattress should support you every night, not just when it’s new,” said Mark El-Hayek, a chiropractor and owner of Spine and Posture Care

Our testers love Saatva mattresses, and it often tops our lists. You’ll find it in Best Mattress for Back Pain, Best Mattress for Side Sleepers, Best Mattress for Neck Pain, and more. We’ve personally tested several Saatva mattresses: Saatva Classic, Saatva Rx, and Saatva Solaire. Read on to see how each of these mattresses might give you a better night's sleep.

Why choose Saatva?

Saatva offers an impressive 365-day trial period. We appreciate the brand’s commitment to customer satisfaction, allowing you to try out the mattress in your home for up to a year. If you aren’t satisfied, you can return or exchange the mattress for a $99 fee. Many other mattress brands offer trial periods of 100 or 120 days. Saatva also offers white glove delivery at no extra charge. So when you buy a Saatva mattress, they’ll deliver it, set it up in your room, and take away packaging. In most cases, they'll also dispose of your old mattress. We like that the brand offers 24/7 customer support. If you happen to need help at 3 a.m., you can actually call them and talk to a real person. This is something no other brand we review can say.

The popular Saatva Classic combines luxury features at a reasonable price, which you’ll see in the Saatva Classic mattress review below. The Saatva Rx has excellent pressure relief and support for those who have chronic pain, like arthritis and sciatica. The Saatva Solaire offers a range of firmness levels and is a flippable mattress, meeting many sleeping preferences and needs. Saatva also makes many other mattresses, and we’ll be testing them all. So check back to see if a Saatva you’re shopping for has made it into our review.

Understanding our scoring

Our mattress recommendations are based on our thorough research and testing. We created two scores:

  • Accessibility score: A combined score reflecting factors that make it easier for older adults to move around and get in and out of bed.
  • Pain relief score: A combined score reflecting factors that help relieve pain while in bed.

The Classic: Saatva's Flagship Mattress

The Saatva Classic is the brand’s bestselling mattress. It comes in three different firmness levels: plush soft, luxury firm, and firm, so sleepers can customize the bed to their preferences. It features a Euro pillow top and a dual coil design made to contour to your curves and relieve pressure and pain.

Saatva Classic

  • Mattress type: Innerspring
  • Brand firmness rating: 3 firmness levels available
  • Pain relief score: 4.8/5
  • Ideal sleeping position: Back, stomach, combination
  • Uses Saatva’s patented Lumbar Zone Technologyfor extra lower back support
  • Features a hypoallergenic, breathable organic cotton cover

Our experience with the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic is the most popular mattress in the Saatva lineup. An innerspring mattress with a dual-coil design, it strikes a balance between supportive firmness and a comfortable pillow-top softness.

When we go to sleep, the body should fully relax, reducing tension in the body. If a mattress doesn’t provide the right support, the body may sink too much or not enough. This puts extra pressure on the joints and muscles, which can lead to stiffness in the joints and muscle fatigue by morning.”  —Mark El-Hayek, chiropractor

Our testers loved the Saatva Classic’s solid edge support. During testing, one of our testers could lie right at the edge without feeling like they would fall off. “Even with laying and readjusting, I feel supported on the edge,” said a tester. “If I lay on my mattress at home in this position, I would be on the floor!”

Our testers were impressed with the edge support of the Saatva Classic.

The Saatva Classic also has excellent bounce and responsiveness, which makes it easier to move on and switch positions. One tester said the mattress helped them move their body when rolling. “I didn’t struggle with the fabric or feel the need to use extra effort.”

But the testers felt the motion isolation was lacking in the Saatva Classic. Motion isolation is how well your mattress can absorb movement on one side of the bed, so you don’t feel it on the other side. During testing, we could feel some of a bed partner's movements. “I felt bounced, with a little bit of a ripple effect,” said a tester. “I definitely think this motion would wake me up to the point where I’d be annoyed.”

Very comfortable. My shoulders and arms are even with my hips. I can feel the contour on my lower back and there isn't a hollow spot. This is perfect—I will see you in an hour after this nap!” —A Saatva Classic tester

Saatva Classic pros and cons

Pros

  • Excellent edge support for those who need assistance getting out of bed
  • High testing scores for support and pressure relief in every sleeping position
  • Three firmness options (plush soft, luxury firm, and firm)

Cons

  • Motion isolation wasn’t as good as other mattresses we tested
  • Coiling system might be a little too bouncy for some people

Who is the Saatva Classic right for?

Because of its lower-than-average motion isolation scores, the Saatva Classic might be good for you if you’re not bothered by your bed partner’s movements. It’s a good choice for those who need sturdy edge support to assist in getting out of bed. We felt supported and comfortable in every sleeping position, so we feel confident that the Saatva Classic can suit a variety of sleeping positions and body weights.

This mattress may work for me if I:
Have chronic pain Yes
Have trouble getting in and out of bed Yes
Feel hot at night Yes
Switch positions while I sleep Yes

Who should keep looking for their perfect mattress?

  • Those who are easily disturbed by a restless bed partner, due to the bouncy responsiveness.
  • Those are looking for mattresses offering extra targeted support for back and joint pain.

The Rx: Saatva’s therapeutic support mattress

Saatva designed the Rx for adults with chronic back and joint pain. It offers extra targeted support for the lower back to relieve back pain and keep the spine in a healthy, neutral position. The Rx features exceptional pressure relief and comfort, earning our top pick as the best mattress for back pain.

  • Mattress type: Hybrid (memory foam and coils)
  • Brand firmness rating: Supportive Plush (3-4/10)
  • Pain relief score: 4.3
  • Ideal sleeping positions: Back, stomach, side, combination
  • Uses Saatva’s Therapeutic Support CoreTM to adjust to the body’s movements and relieve pressure
  • Provides enhanced back support and responsiveness

Our experience with the Saatva Rx

The Saatva Rx scored well throughout our testing categories, though it really shines in addressing joint and back pain. During testing, we were impressed with the Rx’s support, pressure relief, bounce, and cooling abilities.

Our testers were less impressed with the Saatva Rx’s edge support, especially compared to the Saatva Classic. They thought there was a lot of sinkage at the edge, and it felt like they were falling forward. The mattress also earned mixed reviews on motion isolation. While one of our testers thought they could sleep through their partner’s movements, another noted they felt motion when the partner got into bed.

“Your partner’s movements from shifting or leaving the bed can spread across the mattress to you, causing brief disturbances even if you don't fully wake up,” said El-Hayek. “Even small interruptions can prevent people from staying in the deeper stages of sleep that help the body recover.”

Our testers found the Saatva Rx comfortable in all sleeping positions and felt it was easy to move around.

If you like to sleep in different positions throughout the night, you might like the support and pressure relief of the Saatva Rx. One of our combination sleepers spent time lying in each position—back, stomach, and side sleeping—and noted that the pressure felt evenly spread out throughout their body.

Another tester added that they felt the mattress was hugging their body evenly all over. When your body weight is distributed, you feel less pressure on your joints. Pressure points can start to cause you pain down the road.

I really love this mattress. I feel supported down my side and my legs. My shoulder does not have pressure on it and my weight feels evenly distributed. The mattress is hugging my body gently and feels really good.”—A Saatva Rx tester

Saatva Rx pros and cons

Pros

  • Excellent pressure relief for those who experience chronic pain
  • Mattress stays cool
  • Supportive for all sleeping positions

Cons

  • Lower than average edge support
  • Average motion isolation, which could cause sleep disruption with bigger movements
  • Edge support wasn’t as sturdy as the Saatva Classic

Who is the Saatva Rx right for?

Anyone experiencing regular aches and pains or more bothersome chronic pain may benefit from the Saatva Rx. Because of its perfect 5/5 score for support, and almost perfect score for pressure relief of 4.5/5, we think it can help with painful joints or for those who need a little extra support while they sleep. Plus, not all mattresses are ideal for stomach sleeping, due to their lack of low back and neck support. But our testers were comfortable sleeping in all positions, including on their stomach.

This mattress may work for me if I:
Have chronic pain Yes
Have trouble getting in and out of bed No
Feel hot at night Yes
Switch positions while I sleep Yes

Who should keep looking for their perfect mattress?

  • Those who need good edge support for assistance getting out of bed.
  • Those who are easily disturbed by a bed partner's movements.

The Solaire: Saatva’s mattress with adjustable firmness

Built with air chambers that allow sleepers to adjust the mattress’s firmness levels by remote, the Saatva Solaire is customizable for all types of sleepers. Couples with different sleep preferences will appreciate the Solaire’s ability to adjust each side separately on queen-size and larger beds.

Saatva Solaire

Adjustable Firmness

  • Mattress type: Air chambers, latex, and foam levels
  • Brand firmness rating: 50 different firmness levels
  • Pain relief score: 4.3
  • Ideal sleeping position: Back, side, stomach, combination
  • Flippable, offering natural latex on one side and memory foam on the other
  • Hypoallergenic, breathable cotton cover

Our experience with the Saatva Solaire

While it was the most expensive option of the Saatva mattresses we tested, the Saatva Solaire has an impressive 50 firmness options. You can also flip the mattress to either the responsive latex side or the contouring memory foam side.

Our testers were happy with the solid edge support the Saatva Solaire offers, commenting that when moving around on the bed, they didn’t notice a difference being in the middle of the bed versus the edge, because it all felt the same support. One tester noted, “There was no difficulty getting in and out of bed. It had a good bounce and popped back quickly.”

Our testers found the Saatva Solaire to have solid edge support and was easy to move around on.

Stomach sleeping felt good to one of our testers, which not all mattresses can boast about. You often need a firm sleeping surface so your lower back doesn’t sink down.2 This can put your spine out of alignment and cause pain over time while stomach-sleeping. Our tester commented, “It feels equally supported. I don’t feel any curvature or pinching in my lower back. My spine feels good.”

But side sleeping caused some added pressure on the hips in one of our testers. They felt their lower back was sinking more than their shoulders while lying on their back.

The motion isolation seemed better than with the Solaire or Classic. One tester said, “I felt it more when [my partner] moved than when they got into the bed, but it wasn't very pronounced. It was a really mild movement. I think I could've slept through that.”

The fluffy quilted top is really nice and helps me stay on top of the mattress for some airflow. Definitely feels like my body is warming up, but slower than most others I've tested.”—A Saatva Solaire tester

Saatva Solaire pros and cons

Pros

  • Excellent edge support
  • Good motion isolation
  • Customizable with 50 firmness options, and the ability to flip the mattress from memory foam to latex

Cons

  • More expensive than the other Saatva mattresses reviewed
  • Cooling features weren’t as obvious, according to our testers

Who is the Saatva Solaire right for?

The Saatva Solaire is great for those who love to adjust the firmness setting. After all, there are 50 to choose from. If you dream of a customizable mattress that you can switch from memory foam to latex, you can flip this one to your heart’s (or joints’) content. Your firmness needs can change with recurring joint inflammation or injuries like muscle strains, and the Solaire allows you to adjust based on how you feel that night. It’s also great for couples who like different firmness options.

This mattress may work for me if I:
Have chronic pain Yes
Have trouble getting in and out of bed Yes
Feel hot at night Maybe
Switch positions while I sleep Yes

Who should keep looking for their perfect mattress?

  • Those who sleep hot may not find this mattress cool enough. We gave the cooling features an average score of three out of five.
  • Shoppers on a budget might want to look for less expensive options.

Saatva mattress costs

Saatva offers high-quality mattresses that often come with a higher price tag. Throughout our testing, we were impressed by how Saatva mattresses performed, especially in pain relief, durability, construction quality, and customer service. We do feel Saatva’s company policies provide a good value that offsets some of the costs, such as a 365-night trial, a limited lifetime warranty, and free white-glove delivery.

In our testing, we inspect every mattress, pulling back the layers to see its materials and construction.

While we understand the reasoning behind Saatva’s higher costs, this brand doesn’t fit every budget. Coming Soon: Mattresses next in our testing queue

We are always testing new mattresses. We also routinely retest bestselling mattresses to deepen our understanding and confirm our previous results. These models are currently in line to be tested:

Saatva Latex Hybrid

This model has organic breathable materials like cotton, wool, and latex to regulate body temperature. The natural latex, which can appeal to eco-conscious people, gives it excellent bounce and responsiveness.

Saatva Contour5

Unlike the other Saatva mattresses we tested, the Contour5 is made of memory foam that uses cooling technology like Lumbar Zone PCM Maxtrix positioned in the middle third of the mattress to help remove your body heat. This gives you better temperature regulation while cradling pressure points in contouring memory foam.

The Saatva customer experience

Saatva offers an impressive 365-night trial period to test out your mattress to see if you really want to commit. This is much longer than other brands’ trial periods, which are usually 100 or 120 nights. If you want to return the mattress, you’ll have to pay a $99 fee. Saatva also offers a lifetime warranty.

You also get free shipping and free white glove delivery service, which is quite convenient if you live alone or don’t have someone to help you with setting up. Plus, it can be difficult to figure out what to do with an old mattress.
