Brooklyn Bedding impressed us with its consistently high scores in both pressure and pain relief. That’s why Brooklyn Bedding has made it into some of our top lists. The Signature Hybrid bed earned a spot in our best mattresses for hip pain, and the Aurora Luxe is one of our top beds for side sleepers.

Brooklyn Bedding also produces beds designed for specific needs, such as higher-weight sleepers. You can also customize each mattress by choosing your preferred firmness and optional upgrades.

Our Top Pick

  • Bouncy and responsive

Why choose Brooklyn Bedding?

Brooklyn Bedding offers a wide variety of mattresses, and we found these mattresses offer a good value. We especially like them for those who prefer to sleep cool or are looking for pressure and pain relief. These mattresses use materials certified to be free from harmful chemicals, including formaldehyde. Brooklyn Bedding mattresses arrive compressed and may be easier to move and set up yourself than a traditional mattress.

Brooklyn Bedding was one of the first mattress companies to adopt the “bed-in-a-box” model. They keep prices lower by shipping a compressed mattress directly to your door. We appreciate the brand’s commitment to convenience and the cost savings of buying direct from the Arizona factory.

While this review focuses on Brooklyn Bedding’s own mattresses, the company also makes other well-known brands. Titan mattresses, designed for higher-weight sleepers, and Plank mattresses, which specialize in extra-firm beds, are both owned by Brooklyn Bedding.

The two mattresses in our Brooklyn Bedding review, the Aurora Luxe Cooling and the Signature Hybrid, are both at the low end of medium-firm (5/10). Our mattress firmness guide explains why firmness matters and how to choose the right level for you. In our tests, both hybrid Brooklyn Bedding mattresses also earned perfect scores for bounce, which can help you move on the mattress, and 4/5 scores for cooling. Brooklyn Bedding offers free shipping, a 120-night trial period, and a lifetime limited warranty on all its products.

Understanding our scoring

Our mattress recommendations are based on our thorough research and testing. We created two scores:

  • Accessibility score: A combined score reflecting factors that make it easier to move around and get in and out of bed.
  • Pain relief score: A combined score reflecting factors that help relieve pain while in bed.

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling mattress
  • Top marks for pressure relief
  • Responsive surface moves with you
  • Great temperature regulation
  • Pain relief score: 3.57/5
  • Material: Hybrid
  • Brand firmness rating: 5/10
  • Ideal sleeping position: Back

Our experience with the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling

The Aurora Luxe Cooling mattress lives up to its name. It was one of the best mattresses we tested at preventing heat buildup. This hybrid mattress has several layers devoted to regulating temperature, including a cooling cover. Our older adult testers noticed the difference right away, with one noting that the surface “almost feels wet because of how soft, silky, and cool it is.”

Along with its GlacioTex cooling cover, Brooklyn Bedding also offers an optional cooling Cloud pillowtop. “There's no extra fabric or any heavy quilting on the top, which I think helps it not feel so bulky and like it'll retain heat,” said a tester. “The top actually feels several degrees colder than everything around it.” Our heat gun test revealed the mattress experienced a temperature increase of less than 10 degrees Fahrenheit after use (which is below average).

A hand holding a heat gun pointed at the mattress.
We used a heat gun to measure the mattress temperature before and after use, and the Aurora Luxe Cooling mattress showed a difference of less than 10 degrees.

While this mattress’s main attribute is temperature control, our testers also noted its responsiveness. Chris, 66, a higher-weight back sleeper with sleep apnea and spinal stenosis, said when he pushed down on the mattress, there was firm resistance, and “It comes back up pretty quickly.” He said that made it easier to change positions while lying on the Aurora Luxe. It may also be why Chris, who has a higher body weight, rated this mattress as significantly firmer (8/10) than the brand’s claim (5/10).

“You sit on top of this mattress so much,” he said. Often, higher-weight sleepers need a firmer mattress that can evenly distribute their weight to prevent pressure from building up at contact points like the hips and shoulders. But the Aurora Luxe earned high praise for back support from Chris, who has chronic back pain.

One area where this mattress fell short was in edge support. When seated on the side of the bed, Chris said he felt like he was going to slide off and called it the worst edge support of any mattress he tried. He did note that when lying or sitting further back from the edge, the support was much better. But if you find it challenging to get in and out of bed, you may prefer a mattress with more reinforcement at the sides.

Testers found the seated edge support on the Aurora Luxe to be weak.

The top feels really cool. When I lie down on the mattress, I don't feel heat building up at all, and every part of my body that's touching the mattress feels a few degrees cooler than the rest of my body. I'm really impressed with the cooling of this mattress.”

Who is the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe right for?

I may love it if I:
Sleep with a partnerNo
Have chronic painYes
Feel hot at nightYes
Have mobility concernsYes
Sleep in the following positionsSide, back, stomach

Who should keep looking for their perfect mattress?

  • Light sleepers or those who are easily disturbed by a partner’s movements may find this bed doesn’t do enough to shield them from motion.
  • If you tend to sleep near the edge of the bed or have trouble getting in and out of bed, this mattress may not offer the edge support you need.
  • If you need help setting up a new mattress or removing an old one, Brooklyn Bedding and its affiliated brands do not offer that service.

The Signature Hybrid: Brooklyn Bedding’s Best Value Hybrid Mattress

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

  • Plush, cushioned feel
  • Responds well to movement
  • Pain relief score: 3.57/5
  • Material: Hybrid
  • Brand firmness rating: 5/10

Our experience with the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

The Signature Hybrid is Brooklyn Bedding’s second-most affordable hybrid mattress. Like the Aurora Luxe, you can choose your preferred firmness level: soft (3/10), medium (5/10), or firm (7/10). The difference is varying levels of contouring foam over a layer of 8-inch steel springs.

Testers commented on how plush this mattress feels several times, saying,” It is super soft.” They rated it as a 3/10 firmness compared to the brand’s actual 5/10 rating.

Our older adult testers felt the Signature Hybrid mattress was soft but responsive.

At times, the layers of memory foam made it difficult to move, according to one of our testers, Sheila, a 70-year-old average-weight combination sleeper. “I feel stuck in this mattress. I am sinking in a lot,” she said. “I feel like I have to push myself and use more effort to move.” That also translated to low scores for edge support. “When sitting on the edge, I feel like I did sink in pretty extensively,” Sheila said. “The mattress collapses in slightly and the side bulges out. If I was wearing softer pajamas I am afraid I would slide off.”

Where the Signature Hybrid shines is in its superior cooling and pressure relief. Our testers laid on a pressure map, which uses sensors to measure pressure buildup on the body. Based on the results, the Signature Hybrid received perfect 5/5 scores for back and side sleeping, and 4/5 for stomach. Sheila was a fan of the stomach sleeping position. “I feel like this mattress is really good for stomach sleeping because of how soft it is,” she said. “As a woman, I need more relief or sinkage on my stomach for my breasts. My spine feels really aligned, and I feel comfortable.”

Pressure map tests showed near-perfect scores for stomach sleeping, and perfect scores for back and side sleeping on the Signature Hybrid mattress.

The exceptional support of the Signature Hybrid may be due to the sturdy steel spring layer, which testers also gave a 5/5 for bounce. “The mattress bounces back immediately when pushing in,” noted Sheila. Good bounce often helps with mobility, making it easier to move or switch positions on a mattress. It isn’t great for limiting a partner's movement, though. Even with individually wrapped coils, our testers still felt the motion, particularly in their shoulders and neck. “It was less pronounced in my hips,” Sheila said.

Initially, if you got into bed, I might be able to sleep through that, but when you twisted, I felt it the most. I didn't feel like I bounced, but the motion did disturb me. It felt like a ripple effect. The repositioning, I think, would have woken me up. ”
