As important as it is to find the best mattress for a restful night’s sleep, finding the right pillow matters, too. A pillow supports what is arguably the most important part of your body, your head. Keeping your head and neck aligned with your spine can be key to waking up alert instead of aching. Memory foam does a particularly good job of supporting these key areas, so it's no wonder it is a popular choice. More than half of the older adults who responded to our survey (56%) had purchased memory foam pillows, more than any other kind.1 But a lot goes into finding the best memory foam pillow.
Memory foam pillows come in different shapes and sizes, and can be filled with solid or shredded foam. These differences can affect how they feel and how comfortable, supportive, and cool they are. You should also consider the position you sleep in most often, and any chronic conditions you have. Because memory foam pillows mold to the shape of your head and neck, they’re supportive and considered by many to be the best pillows for neck pain.
We spoke to experts, ran tests, and asked older adults for their insights about the best memory foam pillows on the market. Here is what we found, and what you should know about choosing the best memory foam pillow for you.

What we look for in a memory foam pillow
We looked for the following features when choosing the best pillows:
Luxome LAYR Pillow: Best Memory Foam Pillow Overall
We chose the Luxome LAYR as the Best Overall Memory Foam Pillow because you can swap out the adjustable inserts to find the loft and firmness that works best for you. That makes it well-suited for side, back, and stomach sleepers, which is uncommon for a single pillow. It also performed exceptionally well across all our tests, earning scores of 4/5 or higher.

- Has inserts to adjust the pillow’s firmness and height
- Supportive for side, back, and stomach sleepers
- Mix and match for the best sleep experience
- Pillow type and fill material: Down alternative and memory foam
- Adjustability and loft customization: Adjustable with inserts, 9.5” loft
- Firmness level: Adjustable firmness
- Cooling: Gel-infused foam, breathable fabric
- Pillow shape: Traditional rectangle
Pros
- Can adjust pillow firmness and height
- 30-day trial period
- Certified safe materials
- Washable covers
Cons
- Some people might not like having to pack and repack their pillow
- Had the worst cooling score of any pillow we tested
Why we chose the Luxome LAYR as the Best Overall Memory Foam Pillow
We chose the Luxome LAYR as the Best Overall Memory Foam Pillow because it works for almost everyone. It has three different inserts you can mix and match, so you can change the loft and firmness to fit your preferences. This makes it one of the most adjustable memory foam pillows we tested. You can make it a soft, shredded memory foam pillow or a firm one. It even has a cooling memory foam layer. All these choices make it feel like the best foam pillow for most sleepers, and earned it one of the top spots on our list of the best pillows for back sleepers.
Our testing experience with the Luxome LAYR
Our testers loved how easy it was to customize the Luxome LAYR to their preferences. “This is the easiest and most customizable pillow I have tested,” said one tester. “There are three different layers within the pillow, so you can keep it just plush, only memory foam, or shredded memory foam. I liked taking out the larger memory foam piece to lower the pillow's loft for my neck and shoulders. You could go one step further and have it only be plush, which made it more comfortable on my stomach.”
Another tester explained how changing the layers made a big difference: “The nice thing about this pillow is how customizable it is. Once I took out that middle layer of memory foam, which added about an inch, it was more comfortable on my neck and shoulders. I was comfortable on my side and stomach, and when I went one step further and took out the memory foam layer, it was suitable for stomach sleepers. Not my favorite position, but comfortable!”

This flexibility is what makes the Luxome LAYR great for many sleep positions. "You will just have to find the right loft, support, and responsiveness with the different layers you have," one tester said. But testers also pointed out that it might not be best for combination sleepers who switch positions often. “If you don’t switch positions a lot during the night, this is probably a great choice. I wouldn’t recommend this for combo sleepers just because you may enjoy the pillow you customize on your back, but not your side.”
Testers also loved how well-designed it felt. “I thought this pillow was super neat and a comfortable choice for people who may not know what they like in a pillow,” said one tester. “I’ve never seen a combination of material choices inside the case to provide the support it does. I loved the materials and the deliberate design choices this pillow has.”
The main downside of the Luxome LAYR pillow is how much it traps heat. It scored only 2/5 on our temperature tests, so it may not be right for people who prefer a cool pillow. It is also the only pillow on this list without a warranty of any kind. But overall, for people who like options and want the best mix of support and comfort, the Luxome LAYR stands out as the Best Overall Memory Foam Pillow.

TEMPUR-Neck Pillow: Best Memory Foam Pillow for Neck Pain
We chose the TEMPUR-Neck Pillow as the Best Memory Foam Pillow for Neck Pain because it is extra-firm and supportive, keeping your head and neck in line with your spine. This firm memory foam pillow follows the natural curve of your body, allowing your muscles to relax while still staying supported.

25% of older adults who responded to our survey reported having chronic neck pain.1

- Contoured design supports natural neck and head alignment
- TEMPUR-Material memory foam maintains its shape well
- Comes with a five-year limited warranty
- Pillow type and fill material: Memory foam (Tempur-material)
- Adjustability and loft customization: None
- Firmness level: Extra firm
- Cooling: Cooling fibers (optional upgrade for $10)
- Pillow shape: Contoured
Pros
- Very responsive foam
- Stays cool
- Great for back and side sleepers needing strong neck support
Cons
- Not adjustable
- Not ideal for stomach sleepers
- The pillow shape may limit movement while you sleep
Why we chose the TEMPUR-Neck as the Best Memory Foam Pillow for Neck Pain
We chose the TEMPUR-Neck Pillow as the Best Memory Foam Pillow for Neck Pain because it is built to keep your neck and spine aligned all night. Its contoured shape supports your head and neck, whether you sleep on your back or side. One review found that contoured pillows were best at promoting spinal alignment and reducing sleep-related neck pain.2
The pillow is made with TEMPUR-Material, a special memory foam unique to Tempur-Pedic. The material feels extra firm and keeps its shape so your neck and shoulder muscles can relax, but not sink too far into the pillow.
Our testing experience with the TEMPUR-Neck
The molded shape of the TEMPUR-Neck extra-firm pillow was unusual to our testers, who said it took some getting used to. “This is a pillow that is meant to help support your neck and shoulders throughout the night, but it takes a minute to adjust into a comfortable position, and you can’t move around too much,” said one tester. They could tell the difference when lying on their back. “On my back, I could feel pressure relief in my shoulder and neck,” said one. But they felt other sleeping positions were a challenge. “There is no comfortable way to lay on this pillow on your stomach due to the shape of it,” one tester said.

This pillow cannot be adjusted, but the memory foam is responsive. In our tests, the TEMPUR-Neck pillow took less than 2 seconds to return to its full 5-inch height. Some testers thought the extra firmness of this pillow might make it a good fit for some people with higher body weights. “It will really come up to personal preference, but I'd recommend this product to heavier-weight back sleepers, where their neck and head will really sink into this pillow to get support and comfort from it,” said one tester. This pillow also stayed very cool, even without the optional upgrade ($10) of a cooling fiber-infused cover. It earned a 4/5 for cooling in our tests, outperforming most other pillows.
Our testers weren’t wowed by the pillow cover's quality, noting that, for the price ($129), they expected more than polyester. But they said the TEMPUR-Neck pillow still felt comfortable, especially when lying on your back. The brand also has a good reputation for customer service and offers a 5-year warranty on its pillows. If you’re looking for a very firm pillow to keep your neck and spine aligned, this could be a good choice.

Avocado Green: Best Organic Memory Foam Pillow
We chose the Avocado Green as the Best Organic Memory Foam Pillow because it offers the cushioning comfort of memory foam while using some of the safest and most eco-friendly materials available. Avocado’s products all have multiple third-party certifications, and the company backs them with a 100-night sleep trial and one-year warranty. We also liked that this pillow can be adjusted to suit your needs.

- Fully organic, vegan, and certified safe materials
- You can adjust the fill, and it comes with an extra fill bag
- Carbon-neutral company with strong sustainability practices
- Pillow type and fill material: Shredded organic latex and organic kapok fiber
- Adjustability and loft customization: Removable fill
- Firmness level: Adjustable firmness
- Cooling: Breathable cotton cover
- Pillow shape: Traditional rectangle (they also have an ergonomic side sleeper design)
Pros
- Made from certified organic, non-toxic materials
- Adjustable loft for custom comfort
- Two shape options, including a curved side-sleeper design
Cons
- Fill removal can be messy
- Some testers noticed an initial odor
- Not responsive enough for combination sleepers
Why we chose the Avocado Green as the Best Organic Memory Foam Pillow
We chose the Avocado Green as the Best Organic Memory Foam Pillow because it offers the contouring support of a memory foam pillow but uses certified organic and sustainable materials. This pillow is technically not memory foam, a synthetic material. Instead, it is made with a blend of shredded organic latex and organic kapok, a soft, down-like tree fiber that is hypoallergenic and eco-friendly. One research review found that pillows with latex fill were best at promoting spinal alignment and decreasing sleep-related neck pain.2 The cotton cover is also certified organic, and every part of the Avocado Green pillow is vegan, non-toxic, and sustainably sourced.
Avocado offers the pillow in two shapes: a classic rectangle (which is what we tested) and an ergonomically curved side-sleeper design. The pillow can be adjusted by adding or removing fill, and comes with an extra bag for that purpose. The Avocado performed as well as traditional memory foam pillows, earning solid 4/5 scores in all our tests. It is also backed by a 100-night trial and a one-year warranty. Avocado is a certified carbon-neutral company, and reuses or recycles most of its manufacturing byproducts, lowering this pillow’s impact on the environment.
Our testing experience with the Avocado Green
Even though the pillow isn’t true memory foam, our testers praised the materials' quality and said the organic latex and kapok had a similar soft-but-supportive feel. “I think the materials are definitely higher quality than some other pillows I have tested,” said one tester. “The cover is thick and durable, with a little bit of stretch so you can add filling into the pillow if you’d like.”
Adjustability made a big difference in comfort for many testers. “There is still great support within the filling, but the ability to adjust it to make the loft smaller, but still have that comfort is key,” said one. “I took some of the filling out, and it gave me a bit more flexibility around my neck and shoulders. I think people can find pressure relief from this pillow; they may just need to find what firmness they like.”

Testers liked that the Avocado Green pillow came with extra filling. “You can make the pillow firmer than when you bought it, which is nice,” said one. But others found the filling messy to handle. “They do not give you a separate bag to put the filling in,” one tester noted. This means you need to find a place to store any filling you don’t use, and all the filling when washing the cover. Another thing to note is that when this pillow is fully filled, a standard pillowcase will not fit. You need a 30-inch, queen-size pillowcase.
People who tried this pillow found it a good option for someone who likes a softer pillow, with the ability to customize the height and firmness. “This was a nice pillow. It provides enough support where you won’t wake up with any discomfort. The materials are nice and high quality, and it has a comfortable feel.”

Layla Kapok Pillow: Best Memory Foam Pillow for Side Sleepers
We chose the Layla Kapok Pillow as the Best Memory Foam Pillow for Side Sleepers because its mix of shredded foam and kapok, a lightweight natural fiber, gives it a plush but supportive feel. It's also adjustable, so you can find the right height to support your head, neck, and spine when lying on your side.

- High-quality, plush feel
- You can adjust the filling to suit your needs
- Great choice for side and back sleepers
- Pillow type and fill material: Shredded memory foam and kapok fiber
- Adjustability and loft customization: Removable fill
- Firmness level: Adjustable
- Cooling: Breathable cover
- Pillow shape: Traditional rectangle
Pros
- Supportive for all positions due to adjustability
- Long warranty (five years)
- Plush feel
Cons
- Have to store unused fill
- Pillow comes with limited information on how to contact customer service
Why we chose the Layla Kapok as the Best Memory Foam Pillow for Side Sleepers
We chose the Layla Kapok Pillow as our Best Memory Foam Pillow for Side Sleepers because it provides excellent support for the head, neck, and spine in that position. We also like that the Layla Kapok is made of quality materials, including a sustainable natural fiber in the filling. It should be noted that Layla also makes a pillow filled only with memory foam, but we did not test that one. Some memory foam pillows can be very dense and heavy, but the added kapok fiber makes this one lighter, breathable, and fluffy without sacrificing support.
The Layla Kapok memory foam pillow earned high scores across all our testing categories (nothing below a 4/5), and had the highest overall score of any pillow we tested, a near-perfect 9.7/10. This pillow is adjustable, so you can custom-mold it to your desired comfort level and sleeping position. We also like that it comes with a 30-day trial and a 5-year warranty, the longest of any pillow we tried. The Layla Kapok also made it onto our list of the best pillows for side sleepers.
Our testing experience with the Layla Kapok
Our testers were impressed by the Layla Kapok as soon as they touched the pillow’s thick, quilted honeycomb cover. “This is a very well put-together pillow,” said one tester. “I would be comfortable sleeping on it without a pillowcase.” They were even more convinced after trying the pillow, with one tester calling it, “One of the softest pillows I’ve tested.” They also commented on how cool it felt. The Layla Kapok uses copper fibers in its cover, which are antimicrobial and help conduct heat, so unlike other memory foam pillows, this one stays cool.
Testers found that when lying on the Layla Kapok, the pillow molded to their shape while still holding their neck and shoulders in line. “Even though this pillow is pretty soft, there is still pretty good support within it,” said one. “I felt really comfortable as soon as I lay down on my side, and my neck and shoulders were aligned with my spine even though I sank quite a bit into the pillow.”

The adjustable fill made it easy to change firmness and loft as needed, but our testers found they preferred the Layla Kapok as is. “Removing some of the filling made it even softer in my opinion, which took away some of the pressure relief and support,” said one tester. But it’s nice to have the option to adjust the pillow firmness and height for different sleepers.
We found the Layla Kapok pillow to be a great value, with some of the highest scores of any pillow we tested, and the longest warranty (5 years). This pillow’s ability to contour and support the spine in any position makes it a great choice for side sleepers who want to maintain proper alignment.

Our process testing the best memory foam pillows
Our team has spent thousands of hours researching and testing mattresses, pillows, and other sleep accessories so you can feel confident in our reviews. We work with experts in sleep, physical therapy, and occupational therapy, so we know which features are most important when searching for the best pillows for back pain.
For this review, we personally tested over 15 pillows. Each pillow was put through rigorous testing by older adults to ensure we have real-world data on how they perform.
We took these important factors into consideration when testing the best memory foam pillows:
Firmness/loft
We measured how well the pillow retained its loft over several nights. If a pillow becomes squished down and doesn’t bounce back, it may not keep your spine aligned—particularly if you're a side sleeper.
Adjustability
The firmness and height of some pillows can be adjusted by removing or adding fill, whether loose or with inserts. For those pillows, we tried all the different adjustments and rated the pillows on how easy they were to adjust and how much support each option provided.
Cooling
Memory foam is known for trapping heat, and a lot of people prefer a cool pillow. We asked testers to rate how cool each pillow felt, and then measured the temperature change before and after use using a thermal heat gun.
Pressure relief
Memory foam tends to provide pressure relief where needed, which can be a benefit if you switch positions often. We noted how supportive each pillow was when sleeping on your side, back, and stomach.
Materials
We asked testers to rate the quality of the materials used in each pillow and note how comfortable and durable they felt and looked. Some brands use materials certified to be free of allergens or toxins, or make other claims, such as being eco-friendly. We checked whether these claims were backed by a third-party organization and/or a warranty.
Spinal support
Spinal alignment can be very important when you sleep. Not maintaining your spine’s natural curve can lead to pain or other issues. We tested spinal support by checking for a neutral spine in all positions when using a pillow.
Ease of care
Pillows are daily-use items and need regular maintenance. We asked testers to note how easy it was to find the care instructions on each pillow and whether those directions were easy to read and follow.

46% of people who responded to our survey had pillows three years or older.1
Who should consider a memory foam pillow?
Memory foam was invented by a NASA engineer to help absorb impact in planes. But passengers noticed an interesting side effect: They felt more comfortable in memory foam seats on long flights.3 The material, named for its ability to return to its original shape, was able to evenly distribute body weight and pressure. Today, memory foam mattresses and pillows use those same properties.
Many people can benefit from using a memory foam pillow, especially if they deal with neck or shoulder tension. These pillows mold to the contours of your head and neck, providing support where you need it most. A firm memory foam pillow can help keep everything aligned to help you wake up feeling less stiff. Some people who may want to consider a memory foam mattress include:
- Side sleepers: Memory foam fills the space between your head and shoulders, helping keep your spine straight when lying on your side.
- People who toss and turn at night: Memory foam stays in place and keeps its shape, so you won’t have to constantly fluff or adjust it. If you want a pillow that supports you all night without going flat, a memory foam pillow can be a great choice.
- People with neck or upper back pain: The kind of firm, targeted support a memory foam pillow provides may help those with chronic upper-body pain.
- People with a higher body weight: Memory foam tends to be firmer than other kinds of pillows, and distributes weight more evenly, so it may be a good choice for people of a higher weight.
What to look for when choosing a memory foam pillow
There are countless varieties of memory foam pillows. Some are pure memory foam, some contain other materials. The foam may be solid or shredded. The pillow may be adjustable or not. Choosing the right memory foam pillow can make a big difference in how well you sleep. It helps to think about your sleep position, how firm or soft you like your pillow, and whether you like a cool pillow. If you want the best foam pillow for your needs, it’s worth taking a closer look at a few key features:
Match loft and firmness to your sleep position
Loft means how tall or thick the pillow is. Side sleepers usually need a higher loft and a firm memory foam pillow to keep their head and neck aligned. Back sleepers may prefer something a little lower and softer, while stomach sleepers often need the lowest loft of all. Matching the loft and firmness to your sleep style can help reduce pain and keep your spine in a healthier position.
Understand fill types
Solid memory foam pillows keep their shape and offer firm, even support. Shredded memory foam pillows feel softer and let you shape them the way you like. They also help to prom
airflow. Some pillows use a blend of both, giving you a mix of support and flexibility. Choosing the right fill type depends on whether you want a more structured pillow or one you can adjust.
Look for cooling tech
Memory foam is dense, so it tends to trap heat. But some newer pillows are designed to stay cool using things like gel foam, cooling fibers, or breathable covers. These features help pull heat away from your head, so you don’t get sweaty at night. If you sleep hot, cooling should be one of the first things you look for.
Read up on certifications
High-quality memory foam pillows should be made with safe, low-VOC foams that don’t release strong chemical smells. Certifications like CertiPUR-US or OEKO-TEX show that the foam and fabrics meet safety standards. This can be important if you have allergies or want a pillow made with healthier materials. Better materials generally mean better comfort, too.
Consider durability and care
A good memory foam pillow should last longer than a regular pillow because the foam is designed to keep its shape. Solid foam pillows tend to hold up the longest, while shredded foam may need fluffing over time. But you will still be using it every night, so following the care instructions on your pillow’s tag will help it last. Most memory foam pillows come with removable covers that can be machine-washed.
How much do the best memory foam pillows cost?
The memory foam pillows on this list cost between $109–$150. The cost depends on a pillow’s size, materials, and other features. When choosing the right pillow for your budget, look for ones that offer the perks you like and a trial or refund period that makes you feel comfortable.

Frequently asked questions
What pillow loft is best for side/back/stomach sleepers?
The best loft, or height, of a pillow depends on how you sleep. Side sleepers usually need a higher loft to keep their neck aligned with their spine. Back sleepers do best with a medium loft. Stomach sleepers need the lowest loft, so the memory foam pillow doesn’t push their neck too far up.
Are memory foam pillows good for neck pain?
Yes, memory foam pillows can be great for neck pain. Because they contour to relieve pressure where it is needed most, memory foam pillows can help support your head and neck. Contoured designs can help keep the neck in line with the spine without much give. Adjustable memory foam pillows offer greater flexibility, allowing you to adjust the height and firmness.
Do cooling memory foam pillows work?
Some cooling memory foam pillows can work well because they use special materials designed to wick heat away from the body. Memory foam is dense and can otherwise trap heat. Mixing foam with other fills and using breathable covers can also help keep the best foam pillow from feeling too warm.
How long do memory foam pillows last?
Most memory foam pillows last about 2–3 years, but this depends on the pillow's quality, how it is used and cared for, and other factors. High-density foams may last longer. Following the care instructions for your pillow can help it last longer.
How do I wash a memory foam pillow?
Most memory foam pillows have a removable, machine-washable cover. The foam core should be spot-cleaned by hand only. This keeps the memory foam from breaking down.
Solid vs. shredded memory foam—what’s the difference?
Solid memory foam pillows give steady, firm support and hold their shape, while shredded memory foam feels softer and can be shaped or fluffed. The best foam pillow depends on your sleep style and personal preferences.
