If you wake up sneezing, itchy, or stuffed up, your mattress and other bedding could be part of the problem. Dust mites, mold, and other triggers can build up over time and make quality sleep hard to get. That’s why finding the best hypoallergenic mattress matters. It may help reduce allergen buildup and create a cleaner sleep space. And that’s important, since people with allergies could be more than twice as likely to have insomnia as those without allergies.1

We tested dozens of mattresses to find the best hypoallergenic options for you. We looked at materials, comfort, support, and price. Our pick for the best hypoallergenic mattress was the Nectar Classic Memory Foam mattress. It had a near-perfect score in our testing and one of the lowest prices of any bed we tested, making it a great value. We also named eight other top picks, so you can find the right fit for your needs.

Understanding accessibility and pain relief scores

Based on our testing, surveys, and focus groups with older adults, we created these two scores:

  • Accessibility score: The higher the score, the easier it is to get in and out of the bed and change positions.
  • Pain relief score: The higher the score, the more likely it can help relieve pain.

Top features of the best hypoallergenic mattresses

We looked for the following features when choosing the best hypoallergenic mattress:

Nectar Classic Memory Foam: Best Hypoallergenic Mattress Overall

We chose the Nectar Classic Memory Foam mattress as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress Overall because it is certified to be made with allergy-friendly materials. And it had a standout performance across nearly every category we tested. We also found it to be a supportive, comfortable mattress and a great value.

Our Top Pick

Nectar Classic Memory Foam

Best Overall
The Nectar Classic Memory Foam mattress
  • Cotton cover is cooling and treated to be antimicrobial
  • Excellent motion isolation (5/5)
  • Our pain relief score: 4.31/5
  • Accessibility score: 4.3/5
  • Mattress type: Memory foam
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 6.5/10

Pros

  • Uses hypoallergenic foam and other materials
  • Feels cool to the touch
  • Comfortable for side, stomach, and back sleepers
  • Great bounce for easier movement
  • Generous 365-night trial period

Cons

  • The cover is not removable
  • May be too soft for some
  • The mattress is heavy and may require multiple people to move

Why our testers chose the Nectar Classic Memory Foam as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress Overall

We chose the Nectar Classic Memory Foam mattress as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress Overall because it combines comfort, support, and value with materials certified free of potential irritants. Although it is not an organic mattress, it still has many of the qualities people look for in a nontoxic mattress. The foams it uses are CertiPUR-US certified, which means they are made without substances like formaldehyde, phthalates, and mercury. This certification may help limit exposure to some chemical emissions.

The Nectar Classic generally excelled in our testing. It had one of the highest overall scores, a 9.9/10. Our older adult testers said the Nectar Classic was “pretty responsive for memory foam” and that its bounce made moving on it easier than most foam mattresses. “It is pretty easy to roll over and change positions,” said Chris, 66, a tester with a higher weight. “I was not too sunken in to move.” He also described the support as “level and comfortable,” especially on his back. Testers had mixed feelings about the edge support, saying that it felt strong when seated, but slightly less so when lying near the edge. “It feels a little weak on the outside of the bed, and not completely stable when I lie completely flat,” said Chris.

A man pushes down on the Nectar Classic memory foam mattress
Testers felt that the Nectar Classic memory foam mattress was very responsive for foam.

Like many memory foam mattresses, the Nectar Classic excelled at limiting motion when more than one person used the bed. “It's not moving at all,” said one tester. “When they flopped over to the side, I felt that the most, but overall the air from him moving was almost more disturbing than the motion itself. If I was asleep there's not a chance this would wake me up. If motion isolation is your priority, I would definitely recommend this mattress. I don't know how much better you get with motion isolation than this.”

A man sits on the edge of the Nectar Classic memory foam mattress
Testers were satisfied with the seated edge support of the Nectar Classic, but thought it could be stronger when lying down.

This mattress was also great at temperature control, scoring 4/5. The cotton cover contains cooling fibers and has been treated to be antimicrobial. Our testers described it as “cool with a slight texture” and said the temperature didn’t seem to rise with use. Our heat gun tests confirmed this, showing a less than 9-degree increase. Nectar offers an optional cooling cover upgrade for very hot sleepers.

Testers found a lot to like about this mattress, which is why it was also our top pick for Best Memory Foam Mattress. Because it is fiberglass-free, made with certified-safe foams, and treated to be antimicrobial, it may be a good choice for people with allergies or sensitivities. It also comes with a 365-night trial, so you have time to decide if it works for you.

Who is the Nectar Classic Memory Foam right for?

This mattress could be a good choice for older adults with allergies or sensitivities. It is supportive for every sleeping position. It’s also good at controlling temperature for hot sleepers and motion for couples.

Leesa Natural: Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Couples

We chose the Leesa Natural as our Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Couples because it uses natural materials to reduce common allergens, and it has features that couples will find especially comfortable. This mattress tested well for all positions, so it can support different sleep styles in one bed. And it stays comfortably cool even with two people using it.

Leesa Natural

Best for Couples
The Leesa Natural mattress
  • Natural latex is durable and may resist dust mites
  • Breathable organic cotton and wool maintain airflow and comfort
  • 1,032 individually wrapped steel springs distribute weight evenly
  • Our pain relief score: 4.2/5
  • Accessibility score: 4.09/5
  • Mattress type: Latex hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 5-7/10

Pros

  • Made with natural and organic materials that are third-party certified for safety
  • Bouncy feel that keeps you on top of the mattress
  • Good motion isolation for couples (4/5)

Cons

  • Edge support could be stronger when seated
  • May feel too soft for some sleepers, especially those with a higher weight
  • White-glove delivery costs extra

Why our testers chose the Leesa Natural as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Couples

We chose the Leesa Natural as our Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Couples. It uses certified-safe materials to reduce irritants and performed well in our tests, especially in areas that matter most to couples.

The Leesa Natural is a hybrid mattress made with hypoallergenic latex, certified organic cotton, and wool. It is also GREENGUARD Gold-certified for low chemical emissions. Leesa mattresses are constructed in a fiberglass-free facility. Mattresses that meet these standards may be less likely to expose sleepers to certain common irritants than conventional mattresses.

A woman lies on her back on the Leesa Natural mattress
Testers gave the Leesa Natural good marks for pressure relief, with the highest score for back sleepers.

Our testers felt supported by this mattress in any position. They gave it 4/5 scores for pressure relief for the stomach and side, and 4.5/5 for the back. “I feel amazing on my back,” said one tester. “The mattress is filling my lumbar area in. The pressure relief is excellent.” This type of versatility and support can be useful when two sleepers share a bed.

Our testers noted how well the Leesa Natural was able to prevent motion from one partner from affecting the other, and gave the mattress a 4/5 score for motion isolation. “When my partner sat down on the edge of the bed, I barely felt the motion,” said one tester. Individually wrapped coils and foam layers help with this, making it easier for two people to sleep together without waking one another.

Two women lie on the Leesa Natural mattress
The Leesa Natural’s individually wrapped coils kept motion to a minimum, making it good for co-sleepers.

Because two people in a bed can also generate twice the heat, temperature control is important. The Leesa Natural uses open-cell Talalay latex and a breathable cover to pull heat away from the body. In our tests, we measured less than a 10-degree increase in temperature.

“It doesn’t feel like it is heating up as I am lying here,” one tester said.

Testers’ main complaint about this mattress was the lack of edge support. Sitting near the edge felt less stable than lying. “There was too much sinkage,” one tester said. Still, with its strong performance and hypoallergenic materials, this organic mattress is a solid pick for couples who want comfort and fewer potential irritants.

Who is the Leesa Natural right for?

The Leesa Natural may be a good choice if you want a natural mattress made with long-lasting, allergy-friendly materials. It works well for couples, hot sleepers, and those looking for a nontoxic mattress that supports different sleep styles.

Saatva Latex Hybrid: Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Back Sleepers

The Saatva Latex Hybrid earned the highest possible score for back-sleeping pressure relief in our tests. And it’s made with sustainable and natural materials that help create a healthier sleep space. That’s why we chose it as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Back Sleepers.

Saatva Latex Hybrid

Best for Back Sleepers
The Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress
  • Saatva Review
  • Uses certified organic and other allergy-safe materials
  • Has zoned support for the lower back
  • Antimicrobial treatment inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew
  • Our pain relief score: 4.21/5
  • Accessibility score: 4.04/5
  • Mattress type: Latex hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 6/10

Pros

  • Excellent pressure and pain relief for back sleepers
  • Made from high-quality certified organic and natural materials
  • Free white-glove delivery and 365-night trial

Cons

  • Motion isolation is below average
  • Seated edge support could be better
  • May feel too firm for some sleepers

Why our testers chose the Saatva Latex Hybrid as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Back Sleepers

We chose the Saatva Latex Hybrid as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Back Sleepers because it strikes a balance between firm support and comfort without harsh chemicals. Saatva has long used organic and eco-friendly materials in its mattresses, and the Latex Hybrid is no exception. Its cotton cover and wool layer are organic, and it uses natural latex. The mattress is also treated with a special antimicrobial formula to help resist bacteria, mold, and mildew, three common allergens.

A man lies on his back on the Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress
Our tester, who has frequent back pain, found that the Saatva Latex Hybrid offered plenty of support when lying on his back.

This mattress also earned the highest possible score for back pressure relief in our tests, a 5/5. The zoned support under the lower back helps maintain a neutral spine position. The mix of coils and latex creates a firm, slightly bouncy feel that helps prevent sinking too deeply into the bed. “I really like this on my back,” said Chris, 66, a tester who has spinal stenosis and back pain. “It supports my lower back nicely, and I have a bad back so I need a more firm mattress. This mattress is on the firmer side.”

Chris, who has a higher weight, noted that he sinks into this mattress but still feels supported. “My lower back feels great and the mattress is conforming to that area,” he said. “I feel really well aligned and like I could fall asleep. This is one of my favorite mattresses I have tried on my back because I don’t have any pressure points.”

Testers also found that this latex mattress was responsive to movement and allowed them to change positions with minimal effort. This can help if you deal with pain. “I do have issues with mobility because of my back,” said Chris. “But it’s pretty easy to switch positions. I don’t have any issues moving back and forth because I don’t feel stuck in this mattress.”

A man sits on the edge of the Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress
The Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress collapsed a bit more at the edges than expected, according to our testers.

The main drawback of this mattress was weak edge support when sitting. “The edge support is not the greatest for my weight in the seated position,” said Chris. “The piping on the edge collapsed immediately, but the mattress has good bounce. I did feel like it helped me get out of bed, but it collapsed more than I was expecting for how firm it was.”

Motion isolation was also weaker. “This mattress is very springy,” said one tester. “The latex materials, while great for responsiveness and bounce, aren’t the greatest for motion isolation. None of the movements disturbed me too much, but I am not a light sleeper. If you are a light sleeper, latex may not be your best option.”

Who is the Saatva Latex Hybrid right for?

This natural mattress could be a good fit for back sleepers who want firm support and a nontoxic sleep surface. It works well for people with mobility issues or chronic pain. It may not be the best choice for couples, hot sleepers, or light sleepers who wake easily from movement.

I may love it if I:

DreamCloud Classic Hybrid: Best Affordable Hypoallergenic Mattress

The DreamCloud Classic Hybrid is our pick for the Best Affordable Hypoallergenic Mattress because it uses safer, low-emission materials. It’s also the lowest-priced hybrid mattress on this list.

Dream Cloud Classic Hybrid

Best Affordable
The DreamCloud Classic Hybrid mattress
  • Excellent support for back and stomach sleepers
  • Certified to be low in unhealthy chemical emissions
  • Our pain relief score: 3.9/5
  • Accessibility score: 3.9/5
  • Mattress type: Hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 6.5/10

Pros

  • Great value for a hybrid mattress
  • Long trial period (365 nights) and lifetime warranty
  • Responsive support for back, stomach, and side sleepers

Cons

  • Edge support could be stronger
  • White-glove delivery costs extra
  • Not certified organic

Why our testers chose the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid as the Best Affordable Hypoallergenic Mattress

When you shop for hypoallergenic or eco-friendly mattresses, you can usually expect to pay a little more because of the premium materials used or certifications involved. So we were impressed that the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid, which is made with certified-safe foams and costs less than $700, performed so well in most of our testing categories. With a price tag that’s less than half that of most mattresses on this list, the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid earns the title of Best Affordable Hypoallergenic Mattress.

Even at this significantly lower price, the DreamCloud uses high-end materials. The cover is a pillowy Euro top made with a cashmere-blend fabric. One of our older adult testers said it felt “quilted with a silky feel,” not like run-of-the-mill polyester, and was much nicer than expected for a mattress in this price range. “It doesn’t scream cheap,” she said.

A woman presses on the quilted cover of the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid mattress
Our testers were impressed that such an affordable mattress uses cashmere in the cover, and other high-end allergy-friendly materials.

Testers liked how responsive the DreamCloud Classic felt. “It will bounce right back when I place my hand down on it,” said Ruth, a 70-year-old stomach sleeper. “It was easy to switch positions,” she said. “I didn’t feel like the mattress was fighting me in any way.”

They also gave this mattress high marks for support in any position. “I don’t have any pressure on my back like I normally do,” said Ruth after lying on her stomach. When she flipped over, she said, “I feel very nice on my back. I don’t have any pressure at all, and it’s supporting my back very nicely. I feel like I’m sitting on a cloud.”

A woman lies on her back on the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid mattress
The DreamCloud Classic Hybrid mattress earned high scores for pressure relief in every position in our tests.

The one shortfall of this mattress, according to our testers, was its edge support. “The mattress feels like it collapses when sitting on the edge of the bed,” said Ruth. “If I lean too far forward, I feel like my bottom is sliding off.” This could be a problem for people with mobility concerns.

Aside from that, the DreamCloud is a solid choice for a hybrid mattress that keeps costs down without sacrificing support or quality materials. Unlike many mattress options, it comes with a lifetime warranty and a 365-night trial period, which is among the longest in the industry. The brand also offers white-glove delivery for an additional fee, which includes in-room setup and removal of the old mattress.

Who is the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid right for?

The DreamCloud Classic Hybrid can be a good choice for someone who is looking for an affordable hybrid mattress that won’t trigger their allergies. It accommodates hot sleepers due to its breathable construction, and is gently supportive of people with pain or mobility issues. It can also be a good choice for couples who prefer the bounce of a hybrid mattress but don’t want to disturb each other with movement.

Helix Midnight: Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Side Sleepers

We chose the Helix Midnight as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Side Sleepers because it earned the highest possible score for side-sleeping pressure relief and is made with low-emission, nontoxic materials. This hybrid mattress has a medium-firm feel and responsive support that gently cushions your shoulders and hips. This is key for side-sleeping comfort.

Helix Midnight

Best for Side Sleepers
The Helix Midnight hybrid mattress
  • Cooling cover helps regulate temperature for a more comfortable sleep
  • Medium-firm feel with contouring foam and supportive coils for side sleepers
  • Our pain relief score: 4.5/5
  • Accessibility score: 4/5
  • Mattress type: Hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 6/10

Pros

  • Excellent pressure relief (5/5) for side sleepers
  • Strong, stable edge support
  • Made with nontoxic materials that support cleaner indoor air

Cons

  • Couples may feel each other move on this mattress
  • Not ideal if you like a bouncy mattress

Why our testers chose the Helix Midnight as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Side Sleepers

We chose the Helix Midnight as the best hypoallergenic mattress for side sleepers because it combines safer materials with strong comfort where it matters most for those who prefer to sleep on their side. Every Helix mattress is made with CertiPUR-US foams on site in the brand’s Arizona facility. That certification ensures the memory foam used in your mattress doesn’t contain harsh synthetic chemicals like formaldehyde or heavy metals. Helix mattresses are also GREENGUARD Gold certified to have low levels of harmful chemical emissions. That makes Helix a solid choice if you are looking for a mattress with low-emission foams and materials certifications.

A woman lies on her side on the Helix Midnight hybrid mattress
Even testers who said they typically feel pressure buildup when lying on their sides said they felt evenly supported by the Helix Midnight in that position.

This mattress also stands out for comfort. It falls in the medium-firm sweet spot of the mattress firmness scale (6/10), which is usually the most comfortable firmness for side sleepers. “I feel like I am sinking pretty heavily, but in a good way,” said Sheila, 70, a combination sleeper. “I love a more plush mattress so this amount of sinkage is ideal for me. It is still supportive but not too firm.”

The Helix Midnight is designed to reduce pressure on the shoulders and hips while keeping the spine supported. In our testing, the Helix Midnight earned a perfect 5/5 for side-sleeping pressure relief. Our testers appreciated how the steel coils and contouring layers worked together to support them. “On my side, my weight feels evenly distributed,” said Sheila. “I carry more weight in my bottom half and typically have issues with pressure buildup there. But not on this mattress or in this position.”

A woman sits on the edge of the Helix Midnight hybrid mattress while someone measures how far the mattress compresses
The Helix Midnight had superior edge support, unlike a lot of other mattresses we tested.

Unlike many other mattresses on this list, the Helix Midnight has strong edge support. Testers rated it a perfect 5/5. “The piping around the edge of the mattress keeps that edge in place, and it does not collapse like other mattresses,” Sheila said. “I feel like I am in the middle of the mattress when lying on the edge and still feel well supported.” Cooling is another plus. Testers gave it a 4/5 and liked the breathable design. “It feels cool to the touch even after I was lying on it for a minute,” said one tester.

Testers were not as enthusiastic about the Midnight’s motion isolation, rating it only average (3/5). “I could feel both the changing of the positions and the partner getting in and out of bed,” said one tester. “The motion wasn’t awful, but I definitely felt it all the way through the mattress to the other side of my body.”

Who is the Helix Midnight right for?

The Helix Midnight is best for side sleepers who want a medium feel with strong pressure relief and to avoid common allergy triggers. It should be a good fit if you are looking for a nontoxic mattress that is supportive and cool. It may not be the best choice for couples who are sensitive to movement at night.

WinkBeds EcoCloud: Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Neck Pain

The WinkBeds EcoCloud is our pick for the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Neck Pain. It uses natural materials and may help reduce pressure on your cervical spine, helping position your neck comfortably at night. The organic latex and wool in this mattress help resist dust mites and mold, which can trouble people with allergies.

WinkBeds EcoCloud

Best for Neck Pain
The WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress.
  • Certifications including GOTS, Rainforest Alliance, and OEKO-TEX
  • Choice of firmness levels
  • Our pain relief score: 4.26/5
  • Accessibility score: 4.41/5
  • Mattress type: Latex hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 5/10

Pros

  • Made with certified organic and natural materials that tend to be allergy-friendly
  • High pain relief scores in our tests
  • Strong edge support for sitting and sleeping

Cons

  • Feels firmer than expected for some sleepers
  • No white-glove delivery option for this heavy mattress

Why our testers chose the WinkBeds EcoCloud as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Neck Pain

The WinkBeds EcoCloud stood out in our testing for its premium natural materials and support for the head and neck. This eco-friendly mattress is made with natural Talalay latex and has an organic cotton cover. Beneath that is a bed of individually wrapped coils with reinforced edges and zoned support to target areas that need more support, like the neck and shoulders. This combination allows the mattress to conform to support the natural curve of your upper spine and neck in any position. Our testers gave the EcoCloud a 4/5 for support, noting that it helps you stay lifted “on top” of the bed instead of sinking too far. This kind of support is key for neck pain, since poor alignment can lead to stiffness and soreness.

Testers thought this mattress felt even firmer (8/10) than its brand rating (5/10). But that can help if you have neck pain by preventing the shoulders from sinking in too deeply and overextending the neck. “The mattress doesn’t have a plush topper, but the flat surface still has great support and sinkage where I need it,” said one tester. “I feel like my shoulders and hips are fairly even.”

A woman lies on her side on the WinkBed EcoCloud
The EcoCloud’s firm but responsive feel helps support the head and neck in line with the spine.

The EcoCloud performed well for back sleeping, which is often the recommended position for people with neck pain. “It’s comfortable on my back,” said a tester. “I don’t notice any pain points or pressure building up anywhere. The latex feels responsive and supportive.” The EcoCloud earned a 5/5 for bounce, and testers said they felt more “on top” of the bed, which helps with keeping your head, neck, and spine in a straight line.

A woman sits on the side of the WinkBed EcoCloud
Our testers liked the edge support of the WinkBed EcoCloud, both seated and lying down.

Testers were also impressed by how well the EcoCloud prevented heat buildup using natural materials, rating it 4/5 for cooling. They also gave it high marks (4.33/5) for edge support. “I feel safe getting in and out of bed, and don’t feel like I am going to slide off,” said one tester. “I feel supported. My body is pretty even, and I don’t feel like I’m tilting.”

Like many other latex mattresses, the EcoCloud can be a little too bouncy for people sharing a bed. When we had testers try it out with a partner, they said it was average at best (3/5). “I could feel every movement that my partner made, especially big, bouncy movements,” said one tester. So this might not be the ideal mattress for couples who are easily awakened. Another thing to note is that WinkBeds does not offer white-glove delivery. Latex mattresses can be extra heavy, so that may be a drawback for some people.

Who is the WinkBeds EcoCloud right for?

The WinkBeds EcoCloud may be a good fit for people who want a mattress made with certified natural materials and strong, responsive support. It can work well for side and back sleepers who need help with spinal alignment, including those with neck pain. The bouncy feel can also help people who have trouble moving in bed. It may not be the best choice for light sleepers or couples, since movement can travel across the mattress.

Bear Elite Hybrid: Best Cooling Hypoallergenic Mattress

We chose the Bear Elite Hybrid as our Best Cooling Hypoallergenic Mattress because it uses certified-safe foams and breathable materials that can help reduce allergens and heat buildup. This mattress is made with CertiPUR-US certified foam and meets GREENGUARD Gold standards, which means it has low chemical emissions. It also uses cooling materials that pull heat away from your body, helping you stay comfortable all night.

Bear Elite Hybrid

Best Cooling
The Bear Elite Mattress
  • Airflow-supportive design helps reduce heat and moisture buildup
  • Excellent cooling with breathable, heat-wicking materials
  • Our pain relief score: 3.53/5
  • Accessibility score: 3.54/5
  • Mattress type: Hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating 6/10

Pros

  • Stays very cool during sleep
  • Available in a choice of three firmness options
  • Even pressure relief for back, side, and stomach sleepers
  • Made with certified-safe materials

Cons

  • Light sleepers may wake up when a partner moves
  • Edges could be more stable
  • Taller than average, which may not suit all bed frames

Why our testers chose the Bear Elite Hybrid as the Best Cooling Hypoallergenic Mattress

We chose the Bear Elite Hybrid as best cooling because it pairs a nontoxic mattress design with strong cooling power. It uses materials that meet GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US standards, which can help reduce exposure to irritants.

Cooling is where this bed really stands out. Its design encourages airflow and features a temperature-regulating Celliant fiber that wicks heat away, keeping the mattress surface comfortably cool all night. In our tests, the Elite Hybrid’s temperature rose only about 6 degrees after use, compared to the average of 9 degrees. “The top feels cool to the touch,” said one older adult tester. Another said, “Ultimately, it warmed up only a bit.”

A mattress tester presses their hand into the surface of the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress
Testers thought the Bear Elite Hybrid’s cover felt crisp to the touch.

We also like that the Bear Elite Hybrid offers good, responsive support (4/5) whether you sleep on your stomach, side, or back. “I’m not feeling pressure buildup in any specific area,” said one tester. Another added, “This one feels pretty even on my side. My spine feels neutral.” Shoppers can choose the firmness level that best suits their preferred sleeping position and body weight. This mattress also has above-average edge support and good bounce (4/5), which makes it easier to move around on the surface and get in and out of bed. “The edge feels pretty even when I’m lying down,” said one tester. “I don’t feel my body tilting or like I will fall over.”

One downside is motion transfer. “When [another tester] changed positions, my whole body did a little bounce,” one tester said. Still, if you want an eco-friendly mattress that stays cool, supports your back, and may help with allergies, this one is a strong option.

Who is the Bear Elite Hybrid right for?

The Bear Elite Hybrid could be a good fit for people who want a cool, comfortable, allergy-friendly mattress. It works well for all sleep positions and offers different firmness options to match your needs. It may also help if you have back pain and need steady, even support. It may not be the best choice if you are a very light sleeper and need strong motion control.

Birch Natural: Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Back Pain

We chose the Birch Natural as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Back Pain. It uses certified, natural materials that can help limit allergens and has one of the highest overall pain-relief scores of any mattress we tested. It also offers firm, even support that helps keep your spine aligned, which can ease back pain.

Birch Natural

Best for Back Pain
The Birch Natural mattress
  • Birch Mattress Review
  • Uses certified natural latex and wool, which can help make it a good mattress for allergies
  • Breathable, eco-friendly mattress design may help reduce heat and moisture buildup
  • Firm, supportive feel helps keep the spine aligned for back pain relief
  • Our pain relief score: 4.55/5
  • Accessibility score: 4.51/5
  • Mattress type: Latex hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 6.5/10

Pros

  • Fiberglass-free and made with certified-safe materials like organic cotton and latex
  • Supportive feel that may help reduce back pain
  • Strong edge support and good bounce

Cons

  • May not be great for light sleepers or couples
  • May feel too firm for some sleepers
  • White-glove delivery costs extra, and there is a return fee

Why our testers chose the Birch Natural as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Back Pain

We chose the Birch Natural as the Best Hypoallergenic Mattress for Back Pain because it combines a nontoxic mattress design with strong, steady support. Natural materials like latex and organic wool can be less likely to trap dust and allergens than many conventional mattresses.

A man sits on the edge of the Birch Natural mattress
Our testers liked the strong edges of the Birch Natural, and felt secure sitting or lying.

This latex hybrid mattress also stands out for its potential to help with back pain. It is a medium-firm mattress according to its brand rating (6.5/10), but our testers said it felt firmer, more like an 8/10. That kind of firm, even support, can help keep your spine in a straight line and take pressure off your lower back. Our testers said their weight felt evenly spread out, without sagging in the middle. They gave it high scores for edge support, rating it 4.67/5. “It’s firm on the edge,” said Chris, 66, one of our testers with a higher weight. “When I’m lying on the edge, I don’t feel like I’m going to roll off at all.” And when sitting on the edge of the Birch Natural, he said, “The edges bounce back quickly when I stand up.”

Latex is well known for its high bounce, and this mattress scored a perfect 5/5 in that category. “It took hardly any effort to move around,” said Chris. “I’m not fighting the material to move at all. Going to the side is really easy, and rolling over to my stomach is really easy.” This feature can be helpful if you wake up with stiffness and need to shift positions. You won’t feel stuck in the bed, which is common with softer foam mattresses. Also, a too-soft mattress can allow some areas to sink in lower than others, throwing the spine out of alignment.

A man lies on his back on the Birch Natural mattress
Our testers said their weight felt evenly distributed when lying on their back on the Birch Natural.

The Birch Natural does a nice job with pressure relief, especially for back and side sleepers. “I don’t feel any need for extra support,” said Chris about lying on his side. When he switched to his back, he noted, “My body feels equally supported all over.”

The one area where this bed scored below average was motion isolation (2/5). Its bouncy feel was easily felt by a partner in our testing. “Nothing felt dampened,” our tester said. “It just feels really springy.” That could be a problem for couples sharing a bed, especially if one is a light sleeper.

Who is Birch Natural right for?

The Birch Natural may be a good fit for people with allergies who want a mattress with strong back support. It should work well for most back and some side sleepers who like a firmer feel. It could also be a smart choice if you prefer a cool mattress made with natural materials. It may not be the best pick for couples or very light sleepers who need more motion control.

Nolah Natural: Best Firm Hypoallergenic Mattress

We chose the Nolah Natural as the Best Firm Hypoallergenic Mattress because it has a firm feel and is made with certified organic and low-emission materials that are less likely to trigger allergic reactions. It also has the excellent edge support and bounce that firm mattresses are known for.

Nolah Natural

Best Firm
The Nolah Natural mattress
  • Organic cotton cover and natural latex help create a cleaner, hypoallergenic sleep space
  • Firm, supportive feel helps keep the spine aligned for back pain relief
  • Breathable design helps reduce heat and moisture buildup
  • Our pain relief score: 4.39/5
  • Accessibility score: 4.66/5
  • Mattress type: Latex hybrid
  • Brand’s firmness rating: 6/10

Pros

  • Made with organic and GREENGUARD Gold certified materials
  • Excellent edge support and bounce (5/5)
  • Sleeps cool without added chemicals

Cons

  • May feel too firm for some sleepers
  • Not the best for motion isolation

Why our testers chose the Nolah Natural as the Best Firm Hypoallergenic Mattress

The Nolah Natural is made with organic latex, organic cotton, and recycled steel coils. It scored a perfect 5/5 for both bounce and edge support, partly due to how firm it feels. Our older adult testers rated it an 8/10 on the firmness scale, while the brand rated it just 6/10. Firmer mattresses can offer many practical benefits, which you can read more about in our roundup of the Best Firm Mattresses

The Nolah Natural impressed our testers with its high-end materials. Nolah mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold certified, which means they have low chemical emissions. That may help limit exposure to some irritants. The mattress is made with organic cotton and latex, which are naturally breathable and resistant to dust mites. Its firm feel helps keep your spine aligned, which can ease back pain.

A hand presses down on the Nolah Natural mattress
Our testers appreciated the firm, supportive feel of the Nolah Natural.

Our testers were happy with Nolah’s all-over firm support. It earned a 5/5 for edge support and a 5/5 for bounce. “I feel like I am on the mattress more than in the mattress,” said one tester. Another shared, “My body is barely sinking in. I like to feel a little more cradled in my mattress, but this mattress has great support.”

A heat gun aimed at the Nolah Natural mattress
The Nolah Natural had an increase of just over 7 degrees after use, one of the lowest we saw.

It also stays cool without using synthetic cooling layers, earning a 4/5 cooling score in our tests. “This mattress has a cozy feeling lying on it, but doesn’t feel warm,” said one tester. “I would say more temperature-neutral overall. It didn’t feel hot or uncomfortable.” The breathable cotton, latex, and coils help air move through the bed.

There are a few downsides. Because it is so bouncy, it does not isolate motion well. “This bed was more noticeable with motion in comparison to others,” said one tester. Still, if you want a firm, eco-friendly mattress that supports your back and may help with allergies, this is a strong option.

Who is the Nolah Natural right for?

The Nolah Natural may be a good fit for people who want a firm mattress that’s low in potential allergens and has strong, even support. It may work well for back and combination sleepers who like a lifted feel. It may not be ideal for light sleepers or those who want a softer, more cushioned feel.

Our process testing the best hypoallergenic mattresses

Our team has spent thousands of hours testing mattresses, pillows, and mattress toppers to find the best ones for older adults. We compared features such as pressure relief, spinal support, pain relief, edge support, and accessibility.

To determine the best hypoallergenic mattresses, we didn’t just focus on materials. Every bed should feel comfortable, supportive, and well-made. They should work for real people with different body types and sleep needs. Here are some of the features we factored in when making our selections:

Firmness

Most people benefit from a medium-firm mattress (one that falls between 5–7 out of 10 on a firmness scale), according to research.2 But how firm a mattress feels can vary depending on body weight, sleep style, and comfort. We considered both the brand firmness rating and how firm the mattresses felt to our older adult testers. This helped us see which hypoallergenic mattresses felt supportive without being too hard or too soft.

Sleep position

You may want different things in a mattress depending on whether you tend to sleep on your side, back, stomach, or a combination of those positions. We had our older adult testers try each mattress in every sleep position and give feedback on how comfortable and supported they felt.

Pain relief

Aches and pains can interfere with quality sleep, and can become more common over time, research has found.3 So it was important to ensure that the hypoallergenic mattresses on our list earned high pain-relief scores. We used a special scoring method that factored in firmness, pressure relief, and support to determine how well each mattress eased pain.

Pressure relief

To determine how supportive a mattress is, we measured how much pressure built up under different areas of the body. We did this in two ways. One way was to use a pressure mat with sensors that created a color-coded map of high and low areas of pressure when a tester was lying on the mattress. Blue and green mean low pressure, which is what we want to see in key areas like the shoulders, hips, and knees. We looked for good pressure-relief readings in all sleeping positions. We also asked our testers to rate the support they felt in each position.

Trial period and warranty

With so many options for buying a mattress without ever even setting foot in a store, it’s important to know that the brand you buy from has a good reputation for customer service.

We looked for the best hypoallergenic mattresses offering long trial periods and solid warranties. A good trial lets you test the model at home and return it if it’s not right for you.

What is a hypoallergenic mattress?

The materials and design of a mattress can affect how much dust, moisture, and other allergens build up in your bed. A good hypoallergenic mattress can help. Knowing what to look for can help you find a mattress that keeps allergens low while still supporting your body. These key features can make a big difference.

Materials and certifications

Start by looking at what the mattress is made of. One past study found that dust mites, a common source of allergens in mattresses, were more prevalent in foam mattresses than innerspring mattresses.4 Latex is often described as resistant to dust mites, but evidence is limited. The material is thought to provide an undesirable home for dust mites because it doesn’t retain moisture and heat like memory foam tends to. Third-party certifications like CertiPUR-US or GOTS mean a mattress has met certain materials or manufacturing standards. This can be important if you are sensitive to smells or synthetic materials.

Zoned support

Some mattresses have zoned support, which means different areas of the bed are firmer or softer. This helps support your lower back while still cushioning your shoulders and hips. Better support can also mean better sleep. When your body stays in a healthy position, you may toss and turn less, which can help reduce irritation and discomfort during the night.

Hybrid construction

Hybrid mattresses use both foam and coils. The foam gives pressure relief, while the innerspring coils add support and airflow. This mix can be helpful for allergy sufferers because coils allow more air to move through the mattress. Better airflow can reduce heat and moisture, which helps prevent the buildup of allergens like mold and dust mites.

Medium-firm to firm feel

A medium-firm to firm mattress is often a good choice. It helps keep your spine in a straight line while still giving some cushion. Softer beds can let your body sink too much, which may lead to poor posture and more aches. A supportive surface can improve sleep quality.

Cooling features

Dust mites tend to thrive in warm, humid environments. Breathable materials that wick heat away from your body can help. Look for things like gel-infused foam, breathable covers, or coil systems that allow airflow. Some mattresses also use special fabrics that pull heat away from your body. Staying cool and dry can help limit the growth of allergens and keep your sleep more comfortable.

Edge support and motion isolation

Edge support keeps the sides of the mattress strong, so you don’t feel like you’ll roll off. Motion isolation helps reduce movement when someone else shifts in bed. While these features aren’t directly about allergies, they still can improve sleep quality. And better sleep can make it easier to manage allergy symptoms during the day.

Trial periods and warranties

A good trial period lets you test the mattress at home. This is important because it can take time to see how your body and allergies react. Warranties also matter. They protect your investment and can give you peace of mind. If you’re dealing with pain or sensitivity, having time to adjust—and the option to return—can make the process much less stressful.

Easy-to-clean design

Look for a mattress with a removable, washable cover. This makes it easier to keep your bed clean over time. You can also pair your mattress with a hypoallergenic mattress protector or one of the best mattress toppers. This adds another layer of defense against dust mites, spills, and allergens.

How much do the best hypoallergenic mattresses cost?

The mattresses in this review ranged from $649–$2,099 for a queen-sized mattress before any discounts.

Factors that can affect the price of a mattress include the type of mattress or its materials, features such as cooling covers or pillow tops, and any certifications. White-glove delivery is sometimes offered for an added cost (Saatva offers this service for free). This might be worth paying to avoid having to set up the mattress yourself.
