Product Resources
  • Hims offers many hair loss treatments, including prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) options.
  • During our Hims hair loss tests, our testers were impressed by the products’ quality, ease of use, and packaging quality.
  • The process of ordering from Hims is telehealth-based, and subscribers receive unlimited messaging with medical providers.
  • Hims only offers customer service and support through messaging; there is no support available by phone or email.

Our mission at NCOA is to connect people with the tools and resources they need to live a healthy life. We put products under the microscope before we can recommend them to you. To review hair loss products, we researched and tested for over 200 hours before making our first recommendation. To find the best hair loss treatments, we:

  • Consulted with dermatologists, trichologists, psychologists, and primary care physicians
  • Ordered a product and tested it for 2-4 weeks before moving it into the next round for consideration—with testing ongoing for 1 calendar year
  • Interviewed long-time users of these brands
  • Used the products as directed on an ongoing basis—they’re now staples in our testers’ showers and medicine cabinets
  • Read thousands of verified customer reviews

We’re constantly testing new hair loss treatments to give you the most accurate and up-to-date recommendations. Read more about our hair loss treatment methodology.

Hims & Hers Health, Inc., is a telehealth company providing prescription and over-the-counter health care products. Hims offers a range of products for men, including hair regrowth, skin care, mental health, weight loss, and sexual health solutions. The hair loss products include topical sprays, serums, chews, and pills, making Hims an option if you’re looking for some of the best hair loss treatments for men. We tested several products and evaluated this company in our Hims hair loss review.

If you’re experiencing hair loss, you’re not alone. The American Hair Loss Association says more than two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of noticeable hair loss by age 35. By age 50, about 85% of men will experience significant hair thinning.1

Ross Kopelman, DO, a Hair Transplant Surgeon with Kopelman Hair Restoration, explained that androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness, is the most common cause of hair loss in men. “This condition is primarily genetic but becomes more pronounced with age due to increased sensitivity to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a hormone that shrinks hair follicles over time,” he says. “Other contributing factors in older adults can include medical conditions, nutritional deficiencies, and even certain medications.”

Since Hims offers hair loss products by telehealth, the company can be a good option if you’re looking for a convenient way to access prescription and over-the-counter hair loss products. Using Hims allows you to avoid the hassle of scheduling an in-person appointment with your doctor. Plus, you can order the products online and have them shipped right to your door.

Read our Hims hair loss review to decide if this could be a good option for your needs.

What our testers said

What we liked about Hims…

During our Hims hair loss review, our testers found that the Hims products featured quality packaging and the instructions were easy to understand and follow. The Hims Thick Fix Shampoo lathered well, and our testers liked the smell.

The Hims Hair Regrowth Treatment has a very light texture, making it easy to apply. None of our testers experienced any scalp tingling or irritation while using the products.

Our testers liked Hims Thick Fix Shampoo and Conditioner, praising the scent, packaging, and texture.

The Hims Thick Fix Conditioner took slightly longer to wash out than your typical conditioner. One tester also said that he wished the container were larger, as it seems he will go through the product quickly.

Our team is committed to testing Hims hair loss products for at least six months. We’ll be checking back in with more testing information as our testers hit different milestones in their treatment.

Our testers also liked:

  • The packaging doesn’t have a medicinal look
  • The dropper for the Hims Hair Regrowth Treatment works well
  • The Hims Hair Regrowth Treatment has a light, pleasant scent
  • The Hims Thick Fix Shampoo and Conditioner fits nicely into a standard hair care routine

What could have been better…

While there’s a lot to like about Hims, our testers found there was room for improvement in several areas during the Hims hair loss review. The Hims Hair Regrowth Treatment instructions state to apply it twice a day, but one tester found the product made his hair look greasy, so applying it twice a day might not be practical unless you plan to wear a hat when you go out.

A tip from our medical advisory board:

Applying your hair serum to damp hair can minimize the appearance of greasiness. Or, switch to a foam formula.

What hair loss treatments does Hims offer?

Hims offers a wide range of treatment options, including topical and oral products. While some products require a prescription, others are available over the counter. There are several potential ways to use Hims for hair loss.

Oral Medications and Supplements

Finasteride

Hims Finasteride is a once-a-day pill that’s FDA-approved. It helps treat male pattern baldness and works by blocking an enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, which can then weaken hair follicles. It also promotes hair regrowth, and Hims reports that you can expect to see results in three to six months.

Hims Hybrids: Minoxidil + Supplement Chew

The Minoxidil + Supplement chew is a once-daily chewable. It includes minoxidil to promote hair regrowth, as well as a vitamin and supplement blend with ingredients to promote healthy hair, including:

  • Biotin
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin B5
  • Vitamin B6

Hims Hybrids: Finasteride & Minoxidil Chew

The Finasteride & Minoxidil Chew combines two prescription medications with vitamins and supplements to promote hair growth and health. This hybrid medication contains the same vitamins and supplements as the Minoxidil Chew, including Biotin, Vitamin C, and Vitamins B5 and B6.

Topical Prescription Treatments

Topical Finasteride & Minoxidil Spray

The Hims Topical Finasteride & Minoxidil Spray is a two-in-one prescription spray designed to help treat hair loss and promote hair regrowth. It features 0.3% finasteride and 6% minoxidil, and can be used once daily, drying quickly. According to Hims, the spray is their best-selling product, and you may start to see results in three to six months.

Hair Loss Spray & Ketoconazole + Biotin

Hims’ Hair Loss Spray is also available in a hybrid version that contains Ketoconazole and Biotin, in addition to the prescription medications finasteride and minoxidil. Ketoconazole supports scalp health, while biotin supports healthy hair.

Topical Finasteride & Minoxidil Serum

The Topical Finasteride & Minoxidil Serum pairs 0.3% finasteride and 6% minoxidil with an essential oil blend. This hybrid formula features rosemary, juniper, cedar, tea tree, sandalwood, lavender, and eucalyptus essential oils. Finasteride helps reduce DHT, which may shrink hair follicles and contribute to hair loss. At the same time, minoxidil helps reactivate dormant hair follicles and promotes blood flow for hair regrowth.

Minoxidil Solution

The Minoxidil Solution features 5% minoxidil and is designed for people experiencing male pattern baldness. The minoxidil helps promote blood flow and hair growth. The solution features a dropper that makes application easy, and the dropper can be particularly helpful in reaching your scalp, especially in areas where your hair is thicker or very curly.

Hims Hair Regrowth Treatment contains 5% minoxidil, the same active ingredient in Rogaine.

Minoxidil Foam

The Minoxidil Foam features 5% minoxidil to address male pattern baldness. It’s designed to be applied directly to the scalp twice a day. It helps promote blood flow to hair follicles, extending the hair growth phase and promoting growth. The foam is an alternative to the Minoxidil Solution, which can be thinner and runnier. You may find the foam easier to apply if you have straight or wavy hair. It’s also recommended by our medical advisory board if you have oilier scalp and find the serums too greasy.

Topical OTC Treatments

Thick Fix Shampoo

Hims offers a Thick Fix Shampoo, containing saw palmetto to promote fuller-looking hair. It features an eucalyptus grove scent and is free of parabens, sulfates, silicone, and phthalates, which can be harsh on hair. Hims promotes this shampoo as a support for prescription-strength treatments, and it also helps to encourage new hair growth.

One tester’s biggest complaint about Hims Thick Fix Conditioner was that he felt the bottle was too small. Our testers appreciate its scent and moisture-locking formula.

Thick Fix Conditioner

You can pair Hims Thick Fix Shampoo with their Thick Fix Conditioner. The conditioner features niacinamide and panthenol, and B vitamins, which help moisturize hair and promote circulation. The conditioner has an eucalyptus grove scent and, like the shampoo, is free of parabens, sulfates, silicone, and phthalates. It helps restore moisture after you wash your hair, promoting a fuller, thicker look.

Oral OTC Treatments

Biotin Builder Gummies

Hims Biotin Builder Gummies are an OTC solution featuring biotin, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, vitamin D, and folic acid. Biotin supports thicker and stronger hair, and it also promotes skin and nail health. The gummies are a wild cherry flavor, and the instructions state to take one gummy per day. While the gummies aren’t a hair loss treatment, they can provide nutrients to promote fuller-looking hair, so you can pair them with any of Hims’ prescription treatments.

How do you use Hims to buy hair loss products?

When you use Hims for hair loss, the process of finding and ordering the products starts with a digital intake form. You can access the form directly on the Hims website, where you will need to enter details about your health history, symptoms, and treatment preferences. Your information is sent to the Hims electronic medical platform, which contains security enhancements to protect your privacy. A health care provider will review your medical information on the platform.

Next, you’ll connect online with a medical provider licensed in your state. They will discuss your options with you and recommend a suitable treatment, and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Hims requires a photo ID to confirm your identity. According to Hims’ privacy policy, the site may collect a driver’s license number, passport number, and Social Security number. Since some of Hims products are prescription products, requiring a photo ID is an important step in confirming your identity.

Your prescription will be mailed right to your door in discreet packaging. There’s no need to ever go into a doctor’s office, so it’s easy to use Hims for hair loss.

Once you’re a subscriber, you’ll have unlimited access to support through the Hims app. That support includes online check-ins, educational content like videos, and unlimited messaging with medical providers.

How can Hims treat male pattern baldness?

Hims offers several products that may help with male pattern baldness. Dr. Kopelman explained that topical minoxidil and oral finasteride are two of the most commonly recommended treatments for male pattern baldness. Minoxidil helps prolong the hair growth phase, and finasteride helps reduce DHT levels, which can slow or stop future hair loss. “Minoxidil, available without a prescription, can help many men maintain or even regrow some hair,” he said. “However, it works best when hair loss is still in its early to moderate stages.” If men have more advanced hair loss, surgical options often become the next best step to medical therapy, explains Dr. Kopelman.

Hims’ Minoxidil and Supplement Chew, as well as the Finasteride & Minoxidil and Supplement Blend chew, both contain ingredients that help with male pattern baldness. And the Hims Rx Hair Loss Spray features a combination of 0.3% finasteride and 6% minoxidil to help promote hair growth and prevent future hair loss.

Frequently asked questions

Using Hims for hair loss is legitimate. Hims offers hair loss products via telehealth appointment. Hims has been in business for eight years and sells several types of hair loss products, including some FDA approved products.

The Hims brand is intended for men, but Hims & Hers Health, Inc., also includes a Hers brand, which is intended for women. Both brands work similarly, with a telehealth basis and a wide variety of products for hair loss, skin care, weight loss, and more.

Some Hims hair treatments are U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved, including the Hims Finasteride pill. The FDA has approved finasteride and minoxidil to treat hair loss.2 But because the FDA hasn’t approved a topical formulation of finasteride, several Hims products are not FDA approved. Compounded medications haven’t been tested in clinical studies and are not FDA approved.

If you’re thinking of using products like Hims for hair loss, discuss the treatments with your physician. Your doctor can tell you if compounded medications are safe and appropriate for you. Familiarize yourself with any potential effects before starting a treatment, and contact your doctor if you have any questions. Hims also gives subscribers unlimited messaging with medical professionals, so you can report any issues you’re having and change your treatment if necessary.
