  • Our testers loved the level of customization the Luxome LAYR allowed for, and that the cover is machine washable.
  • Each Luxome LAYR pillow costs $150, which makes it one of the pricier pillows we've tested.
  • The Luxome LAYR ranked as one of our best pillows of 2026.
  • Because of its customizable loft and firmness, the LAYR works for all sleeping positions.

Pillows help with spinal alignment, making them an important part of a good night’s sleep. Studies have shown that pillow customization plays a role in sleep health because choosing a pillow that meets your needs promotes increased sleep comfort.1 The best way to find a pillow that caters to your needs is by finding a pillow you can customize, like the Luxome LAYR pillow. This Luxome LAYR pillow review dives deeper into the reasons the LAYR ranks as one of our best pillows of 2026. Below, we’ll cover costs, adjustability, cooling, and more.

Why choose the Luxome LAYR pillow?

When we surveyed older adults on what they look for in a pillow, the quality of materials was the most important feature.2 The Luxome LAYR is made of bamboo-derived natural viscose fibers and filled with high-quality memory foam approved by CertiPUR-US.

But customization is where the LAYR shines. The pillow has three removable inserts—a down-filled insert, a down-and-shredded-memory-foam insert, and a fully foam insert. You can use these inserts to adjust the pillow's firmness and loft (height) between 6–9.5 inches, making the Luxome LAYR one of the few pillows we tested that’s good for every sleep position.

The inserts inside the Luxome LAYR pillow
Three inserts in the Luxome LAYR allow you to adjust the pillow's height. One layer is made of down, one of down and memory foam, and one that’s all foam.

Each sleep position needs a little something different from a pillow. “For side sleepers, a supportive pillow reduces shoulder compression,” said Joseph Dzierzewski, PhD, senior vice president of research and scientific affairs at the National Sleep Foundation in Washington, D.C. “For back sleepers, [a supportive pillow] prevents the chin-to-chest posture that can exacerbate airway collapse and obstructive sleep apnea.” And stomach sleepers may need a flatter, more compressive pillow or often no pillow at all.

While this usually means each type of sleeper needs a different pillow, with the Luxome LAYR pillow, you can add or take out the inserts to support sleep and spinal alignment for all positions.

How we tested the Luxome LAYR pillow

We looked for the following features when testing this pillow:

Luxome LAYR pillow: Flexible and User-Friendly

Our testers called the Luxome LAYR “high tech.” Between the machine-washable cover and all the LAYR’s softer and firmer inserts, this pillow earned accolades for being “the easiest and most customizable pillow” our testers had slept on. The pillow earned 4s and 5s across the board in our testing.

What our testers thought of the Luxome LAYR pillow

After sleeping on the Luxome LAYR pillow, our testers raved about its versatility. “This pillow can easily be for any kind of sleeper, the way it’s customizable,” one tester remarked. “It’s a super neat and comfortable choice for people who may not know what they like in a pillow.” The adaptability of Luxome LAYR led to its 4.5/5 experience score.

For materials, the Luxome LAYR earned a 5/5. “I've never seen such a combination of material choices inside the case to provide the support,” said one tester. The Luxome LAYR is one of the few pillows we’ve tested that has removable inserts. Each of the three inserts is made of a different material and has a different firmness. The "medium" insert is a blend of gel-infused shredded memory foam and down fibers. The "soft" insert is 100% down alternative. And the "firm" insert is made from slabs of dense memory foam. “I loved the materials and the deliberate design choices this pillow has,” our tester said.

You can mix and match the three inserts to tweak the LAYR's firmness and loft. With all the inserts in, the pillow is 9.5” tall, but you can remove inserts to bring it down to 6”. While the inserts themselves aren’t machine washable, the cover is. At 17" x 24”, the pillow will also fit a standard pillowcase. Not every luxury pillow is this user-friendly, so the LAYR earned another 5/5 for instructions and ease of use.

Given all those layers, our testers weren't surprised to find the Luxome LAYR retained more heat than many pillows. Our thermal gun tests showed the LAYR rose 17 degrees during testing with all of its inserts. Most of the pillows we tested rose 10–14 degrees. But pairing the Luxome LAYR with a set of the best cooling sheets may help manage overall heat retention in your bed.

Who is the Luxome LAYR pillow right for?

Because you can adjust this pillow’s loft more than any other we've tested, the Luxome LAYR may be a good fit for all types of sleepers. Its adaptability places it on our list of best pillows for side sleepers and best pillows for back sleepers. And though the best pillow for stomach sleepers is often no pillow at all, the Luxome LAYR was the best overall pillow for stomach sleepers, too.

The quilted cover of the Luxome LAYR is machine washable, so it’s a good fit for people who like low-maintenance luxury. Luxome offers a 30-night trial, so the LAYR could also benefit folks who need some time to make up their minds.

The Luxome LAYR pillow also makes our list of the best pillows for people with back pain. Our testers reported having no trouble adjusting the pillow to reduce tension in their necks and shoulders, which led to fewer pressure points on their backs.

Those on a budget may not love the Luxome LAYR. The pillow costs $150, though shipping is free. People seeking an adjustable pillow for half the price might like the Silk & Snow pillow.

How to use a Luxome LAYR pillow

Luxome says it ships all orders within 24 hours on business days. Standard shipping is free, but you can also choose Premium Ground or Expedited shipping speeds.

Once your Luxome LAYR arrives, customization can begin. Your LAYR ships with all included inserts, so you can adjust it in person—there’s no choosing from dropdowns online or guessing what pillow loft or firmness might be right for you.

Your order comes with a configuration chart to help you craft the right combination of loft and firmness for your sleep style. Luxome suggests starting with two inserts and placing your desired “softness” insert on top. You might discover you like a squishy pillow, and the firm all-foam insert doesn’t serve you. Maybe a firm pillow is exactly what you need, and the duvet-like down insert is what you remove. Store the inserts you don’t use in your linen closet in case you need them again.

Luxome LAYR pillow costs

At $150, the Luxome LAYR's pillow costs are on par with other luxury brands like Saatva and Avocado. The LAYR’s price tag is also similar to other high-quality adjustable pillows on the market, like the Coop Sleep Goods Adjustable Pillow, which retails for $149.
