This isn’t unusual, but it’s something to keep in mind if you plan to use the mattress with a non-Helix adjustable frame.

When our performance testing began, the bed quickly proved its worth, scoring well in support and pressure relief, especially for back and side sleeping. Our tester Chris, a 66-year-old higher-weight back sleeper with spinal stenosis, said, “My hips feel aligned nicely. I don’t feel like I’m lacking support in any area.” He also said his spine felt neutral and evenly supported across the mattress.

Yet while sitting on the edge, one tester said they felt like they were going to slide forward. “The longer I sit, the less bounce there is,” they said, adding they had to use a little more effort to sit back up.

The edge support when lying down was much better. “I don’t feel at all like I’m going to slip off,” another tester mentioned. “Going closer to the edge, I still feel supported. When I lie down, I can feel the cushion/airflow keeping my back a little cooler. Definitely one of the top ones I’ve tested. Solid cooling mattress, definitely above average.”

One tester, a lighter-weight combination sleeper, described the feel of this mattress as “a board with cushion,” noting it offers strong support while still feeling smooth. “You need to like a firm mattress,” she added. Testers found the mattress feels dense and firm, with materials that bounce back quickly. “The materials feel like a dense memory foam,” said one tester. Yet that responsiveness didn’t carry well to the bed’s edges. Testers noted the edge sank more than expected, especially when leaning forward. “I feel like you need your hands to assist you on this bed. The edge collapses more than usual, and it sinks too much. It does not feel as supportive, especially if I lean forward,” another one of our testers said.

As with many hybrid mattresses, the Nolah Evolution is only compatible with its adjustable base because its coils are individually wrapped, allowing for better movement. Yet we found the mattress only aligns well with Nolah’s bases. So we recommend buying the mattress and a Nolah adjustable base together. 

Our testers describe the Nolah Evolution as cozy and luxurious without being overly plush. They rate the mattress on the softer side, scoring it 4 out of 10 for firmness, while the brand rates the firmness of the Luxury Firm model as 6.5 out of 10. The cover feels cool to the touch, and the mattress provides slightly above average cooling.

A standout feature for couples is the mattress’s excellent motion isolation. One tester noted, “When my partner first got in, I felt the mattress bounce a tiny bit in my lower half, but my upper half was less affected and more isolated. I didn't really feel the movement in my upper half at all. I don't think this would wake me.” This is a big plus for couples, especially if one partner tosses and turns or frequently gets up at night.

We were also impressed with the amount of pressure relief from the Nolah Evolution. One tester, an average-weight combination sleeper, said she felt no pressure buildup when lying on her side. “I feel like the topper is hugging your body enough while the other layers offer good support,” she commented. She also felt no pressure while lying on her back and stomach.

The plush top sinks in when we sit on the side, but it doesn’t feel unstable. Once we sank a bit, we could feel the firmer support layers on the edge of the bed.

The soft top that limits motion makes it more difficult to change positions. One tester noted, “I feel like I am struggling more to switch positions due to the soft memory foam topper and quilted texture. I feel like it's a little too soft and stops my body from turning, and I need to use my arms more to move my body.”

Who is the Nolah Evolution right for?

Because it is excellent at isolating motion, the Nolah Evolution can be a great choice for couples. The plush pillow top also provides excellent pressure relief for those with chronic pain. We found its cooling capabilities were only average in our temperature tests, so if that’s a priority for you, you may want to take a second look at the Bear Elite Hybrid.

The plush surface can make it a little harder to move around, so it might not be the best fit if you change positions a lot during the night.

Testers found the organic cotton cover feels cool and soft. The Birch Natural is on the firm side, with our testers scoring it an 8 out of 10 for firmness, while the brand lists its firmness rating as 6.5 out of 10. It is also bouncy and responsive, which makes it easier to change positions. It also scored well in our seated and lying edge support tests. Testers said the edges are firm and bounce back quickly, which can make transfers easier. 

The Birch Natural also performed well in our pressure relief tests. Testers said it evenly distributed weight and supported both side and back sleeping positions. But one higher-weight combination sleeper noted some discomfort while lying on their stomach. “It created some pressure on my lower back. It didn’t feel like it was pushing into the mattress enough. My spine felt very curved, and it was a little painful,” he said. “For someone who sleeps on their stomach, this might work, but it wasn’t comfortable for me.”

Testers noted the Birch Natural lacked good motion isolation, scoring it 2 out of 5 in this category. “It feels a little thin. I can feel every single movement. Nothing felt dampened. I could feel total bounce. The bounce can be helpful for getting out of bed, but if you care about motion isolation, then this is just thin. The other ones have some layers of quilted, or plush topping, and this has nothing, so it just feels really springy and none of the movement is dampened.”

Our process testing the best mattresses for adjustable beds

To find the best mattresses for adjustable beds, we paid close attention to factors like pressure relief, motion isolation, and pain relief. We also looked at flexibility to make sure the mattress could bend and move easily with an adjustable base.

Pressure relief 

Many people choose adjustable beds to relieve pressure points. We looked at mattresses with high pressure relief scores to ensure maximum pressure relief.

Our pressure relief scores are based on both our testers’ experiences and the results of a pressure relief map. The map shows areas of high pressure in red or orange. Green and blue indicate even weight distribution and minimal pressure buildup.

Motion isolation

Our motion isolation test is a two-person test. One person moves around in the bed—shifting, rolling, and getting in and out of bed—while the other stays still. The amount of movement the still person feels helps us determine the motion isolation score. Mattresses with high motion isolation absorb movement. This can be helpful for older adults who may already be dealing with a sleep deficit.

Pain relief

Based on research and testing, we think these are the most important things to consider when buying a mattress for an adjustable bed.

Pain relief

Adjustable beds allow you to sleep with your head and/or legs elevated. This can help shift weight off painful areas and reduce strain on your lower back.

Sleeping position

When choosing the best mattress for an adjustable bed frame, consider your preferred sleeping position. To learn more about finding the best options, we spoke with Gbolahan Okubadejo, MD, FAAOS, a board-certified spinal surgeon and the head of The Institute for Comprehensive Spine Care in Jersey City, New Jersey. Dr. Okubadejo explained the best adjustable bed settings for each sleep position to us:

• Side: “Side sleepers using an adjustable bed should look for a mattress that’s both flexible and supportive. Memory foam or latex mattresses tend to work best because they can bend easily with the base while still contouring to the body’s curves—especially the shoulders and hips, which need pressure relief,” said Dr. Okubadejo. ”A medium to medium-soft firmness usually provides the right balance of comfort and spinal alignment. Also, look for mattresses specifically labeled as ‘adjustable base compatible’ to ensure durability and optimal performance when the bed is in motion.”
• Back: According to Dr. Okubadejo, “Back sleepers using adjustable beds should look for a mattress that offers a balance of support and contouring—ideally with a medium-firm feel. Materials like memory foam, latex, or hybrid designs work well because they flex with the bed’s movements while maintaining support for the spine’s natural S-curve. Zoned support is a plus, as it can provide extra reinforcement in the lower-back area. It’s also important to choose a mattress labeled as adjustable-base compatible to ensure durability and prevent wear from repeated movement.”
• Stomach: “Adjustable beds aren’t ideal for stomach sleepers,” said Dr. Okubadejo. “This position already places strain on the neck and lower back, and elevating the head or legs can worsen alignment. If you’re a stomach sleeper, I generally recommend training yourself to sleep on your side instead, which is much more compatible with the benefits of an adjustable base.”

Body weight

Your body weight can affect how well a mattress performs on an adjustable bed. Here’s what to consider:

• Higher-weight (more than 250 pounds): A thicker, firmer hybrid mattress is best for higher-weight sleepers. The coils provide strong support to keep you from sinking too much, which helps keep your spine aligned. Good edge support helps keep the mattress from sagging.
• Average-weight (130–250 pounds): Medium to medium-firm mattresses typically provide a good balance of comfort and support for average-weight sleepers. Foam, latex, and hybrid models all work well, depending on your preference.
• Lower-weight (less than 130 pounds): Lighter-weight people often perceive mattresses as firmer than other sleepers. They usually sleep best on softer mattresses with plush, top layers to help reduce pressure points.

Compatibility 

Traditional innerspring mattresses often don’t work well because they aren’t flexible enough to bend with the base. Hybrid, memory foam, and latex mattresses are better choices since they can move with the frame. Buying the mattress and adjustable base from the same brand is best to ensure they work well together. You can also check with your bed frame’s brand to see which types of mattresses they recommend.
