Why choose the Beautyrest Black?
One strong reason to consider the Beautyrest Black is the certified safety of its materials. The mattress holds a CertiPUR-US certification, which means its memory foam is free of formaldehyde, flame retardants, and heavy metals. It also means the foam meets standards for low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. Research indicates VOCs are a known concern in the mattress industry.1
The Beautyrest Black also earned solid scores for edge support and pressure relief in our testing. These two factors can make a real difference in how comfortable a mattress feels night to night. Edge support creates a stable surface for sitting, standing, and getting in and out of bed. Pressure relief describes how well a mattress supports your spine and cushions your joints as you sleep. This plays a large part in our pain relief scoring. The Beautyrest Black scored a 3.84/5 for pain relief.
But where the Beautyrest Black stands out most is firmness customization. Research suggests that medium-firm mattresses support comfort and sleep quality.2 Beautyrest Black offers six firmness options for the Series Three alone, from extra firm to multiple pillow-top variations. This makes it easier to find a feel that suits your sleep style.

Understanding our scoring
Our mattress recommendations are based on our thorough research and testing. We created two scores to reflect the needs of our audience:
- Accessibility score: A combined score reflecting factors that make it easier to move around and get in and out of bed.
- Pain relief score: A combined score reflecting factors that help relieve pain while in bed.
The Beautyrest Black: Customization and Pressure Relief
The Beautyrest Black offers more customization options than any other mattress we've tested. It earned a strong 4/5 from our testers for pressure relief for side sleepers. Its multiple layers of cooling technology helped it earn a 3/5 for temperature control.

What our testers thought of the Beautyrest Black
Beautyrest advertises the Black as being effective at cooling and good for back sleepers. With this in mind, we tested for temperature control, mattress responsiveness, and pressure relief. Our testers were impressed by the responsiveness of the Beautyrest Black's comfort layer. "The topper comes back really quickly, and didn't hold the shape for long when I stuck my hand down," one tester said. Responsiveness is good for side and combination sleepers because it means the mattress adjusts to contour your body as you change positions. That said, our testers did notice the Beautyrest Black put up a little resistance when changing positions. "It's not completely easy to move, but I'm not stuck, either," one tester said.
Being able to change positions comfortably during the night matters, and the right mattress for older adults can make that easier. "A mattress that is overly soft or slow to respond may create a 'stuck' sensation, making it harder to roll over or get out of bed," said Danielle Wall, MD, a board-certified physician and assistant professor at the University of Vermont Larner School of Medicine in Burlington, Vermont. "Responsive materials can improve ease of movement while still maintaining pressure relief and support."

Contrary to what the brand advertises, testers found that side sleepers, not back and stomach sleepers, experienced the most pressure relief on the Beautyrest Black. Pressure relief comes from the support of the mattress's high-density pocketed coil layer, which helps align your spine while the foam layers cushion your joints.
We test for pressure relief using a thermal mat that creates a color-coded chart of where it detects pressure points. Side sleeping on the Beautyrest Black revealed almost no pressure points. "I feel a little pressure in my shoulders, but my hips feel good," one tester said. "I don't feel anything out of place, and my spine feels neutral." For more mattresses that support a neutral spine, see our review of the best orthopedic mattresses.
Our testers awarded the Beautyrest Black 4/5 for side-sleeping pressure relief. Scores were solid but lower in other positions. Back sleepers rated it 3.5/5 for pressure relief, and stomach sleepers rated it 3/5.

Beautyrest's Sleep Climate™ technology is designed to keep the mattress surface cool to the touch. In our testing, the mattress surface rose only 10.8 degrees after use, measured with a heat gun. "It wasn't noticeably warming up, to the point where I felt hot," one tester said. "I could feel it was a bit warmer under me, but I don't think it would be too uncomfortable throughout the night." We gave the Beautyrest Black a 3/5 cooling score. If heat retention is a concern, pairing this mattress with cooling sheets may also help.

Who should use a Beautyrest Black mattress?
Side sleepers will get the most pressure relief from the Beautyrest Black. Combination sleepers will also enjoy the responsive surface. It's worth noting that responsive doesn't always mean bouncy. The high-density foam layer absorbs most partner movement, so you're less likely to feel disrupted when someone gets in or out of bed. "Getting in and out of bed wasn't too disruptive," one tester said of the Beautyrest Black's motion transfer. We awarded the mattress 3.5/5 for motion isolation, which suggests most couples should sleep comfortably.

Who should keep looking for their perfect mattress?
- Stomach sleepers: While Beautyrest recommends the Black Series Three for back and stomach sleepers, our testers found the mattress worked best for back and side sleepers. The mattress didn't provide enough support in the stomach-sleeping position, earning a 3/5 for pressure relief in that position. Shoppers who want a hybrid mattress with better stomach-sleeping support may want to consider our review of the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid.
- Light sleepers: The Beautyrest Black earned a 3.5/5 for motion isolation, but our testers felt the motion transfer may still be noticeable for very light sleepers. "I think people who sleep very lightly would wake up from a partner tossing and turning," one tester said.
- Sleepers on a budget: At $3,999 for a queen, the Beautyrest Black is one of the more expensive mattresses we've tested. People looking for strong side-sleeping pressure relief at a lower price may want to see our review of the Helix Plus.

How to choose a Beautyrest mattress for you
The Beautyrest Black line offers more customization than most mattresses we've tested. Within the Black collection, there are three series, each offering between two and five firmness options. The Series Two is advertised as having more cooling than the Series One. The Series Three, which we tested for this Beautyrest Black review, features an upgraded pillow top.
To find the best Beautyrest Black mattress for you, consider these questions:
- Where do you experience pressure points when you sleep?
- Which position do you sleep in most often: side, back, or stomach?
- Do you prefer a plush feel or a firmer surface?
- Is cooling an important feature for you?
- Are you easily disturbed when a partner gets in or out of bed?
- What is your budget?
How to use a Beautyrest Black mattress
Beautyrest offers white-glove delivery for its mattresses. After purchasing online, the brand's third-party shipping partner will contact you to schedule a delivery date. Allow 2–4 weeks between order and delivery. The delivery team will bring the mattress to your bedroom, set it up on your bed frame or adjustable base, and remove your old mattress at no extra charge. White-glove delivery is especially important for this mattress because the Beautyrest Black mattress can weigh between 94 and 274 pounds, depending on the size and firmness.
Frequently asked questions
How long will the Beautyrest Black last?
The Beautyrest Black mattress comes with a 10-year limited warranty, which aligns with how long most mattresses last with regular use. To get the most out of your mattress, rotate it once every three months to prevent sagging and uneven wear.
What compares to Beautyrest Black?
Other luxury hybrid mattresses are worth considering alongside the Beautyrest Black. Brands like Saatva and Avocado offer hybrid mattresses at a similar price. And both allow for firmness customization similar to the Beautyrest Black lineup.
Do you need a box spring with Beautyrest Black?
No. The Beautyrest Black does not require a box spring, and Beautyrest does not sell box springs. The brand does offer a steel foundation for around $300 if you prefer not to place the mattress directly on a bed frame.
