Healthy sleep gives your body time to recover from the day. But your mattress can affect more than comfort. Some sleep products may contain PFAS, also called “forever chemicals.” Research suggests PFAS can enter the bloodstream through consumer products, including certain sheets and mattresses, and may disrupt healthy sleep.1
That’s where Avocado stands out. The brand focuses on organic materials, nontoxic certifications, and supportive latex hybrid designs. In this Avocado mattress review, we’ll look at how these beds perform for comfort, support, and safer sleep.
If you want to make your sleep setup more organic, Avocado may be worth considering. The Avocado Green Mattress uses natural latex, organic wool, and organic cotton. According to Avocado, it’s the only mattress in the U.S. certified nontoxic by five independent evaluators. That means you won’t find fiberglass or chemical flame retardants in this organic mattress. What you will find, according to our testers, is a balance of cushioning and support. Read our full Avocado mattress review to see how these organic beds performed in our testing.

Why choose Avocado?
When you sleep, your mattress and bedding should do two things: align your spine and cradle your pressure points. Both may help your body recover from the day's strain. Avocado’s flagship mattress, the Avocado Green, performed well for pressure relief in our testing. This is particularly true for stomach and back sleepers, where it scored 4/5 in our testing for pressure relief. We named it the top firm mattress in our Best Organic Mattresses roundup. We also chose the Avocado Eco Organic mattress topper as one of our best mattress toppers for its comfort and pressure relief.
“The mattress acts as a passive support system for the body for 6 to 8 hours, so it should help keep the spine in a neutral, natural position, not curved or strained,” said Tina Sadarangani, ANP-C, GNP-BC, board-certified geriatric nurse practitioner and creator of The Enlightened Caregiver. “Proper alignment reduces stress on joints, muscles, and discs, and helps prevent morning stiffness and chronic pain. Different sleepers need different support.”
Avocado offers more than solid alignment and pressure relief. The brand has a strong reputation for its organic materials. The Avocado Green combines GOLS-certified Dunlop latex with Talalay latex. Avocado overlays those latex layers with organic wool and organic cotton. According to Avocado, the Avocado Green is the only mattress in the U.S. that’s certified nontoxic by five independent evaluators. These are GREENGUARD Gold, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, and UL® Formaldehyde-Free. In comparison, the best latex mattresses are generally certified by at most two of these. The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and GREENGUARD for low chemical emissions are the most common.

Natural materials, like the cotton, wool, and latex in the Avocado Green, might appeal to eco-conscious sleepers. Avocado uses certified latex in its mattresses instead of polyurethane foam. The Avocado Green’s wool layer wicks moisture and helps regulate temperature, and our testers found it effective. The mattress cover is organic cotton, which our testers said was “soft and cozy.”

Understanding our scoring
Our mattress recommendations are based on our thorough research and testing. We created two scores to reflect the needs of our audience:
- Accessibility score: A combined score reflecting factors that make it easier for older adults to move around and get in and out of bed.
- Pain relief score: A combined score reflecting factors that help relieve pain while in bed.
The Avocado Green: Firm, Eco-Conscious Pressure Relief
Our testers found The Avocado Green bouncy and easier to move around on. This feature can benefit those who sleep with chronic pain. The bed also offers strong pressure relief, which may also make it a good option for people with lower back pain.

Our experience with the Avocado Green
We named Avocado as the best latex option in our roundup of Best Mattresses for Stomach Sleepers. “My chest and bottom feel equally supported,” one of our stomach-sleeping testers said. “This position is fairly comfortable.” Back-sleeping tests went similarly well. “My body feels fairly even,” reported one tester. “The firmness feels really good for my back and is giving me good pressure relief throughout.” The Avocado Green earned 4/5 for both back and stomach sleeping.
The Avocado Green provides pressure relief through cushioning. The Dunlop and Talalay latex layers cradle joints and pressure points. Underneath the cushioning latex layer are innerspring coils. These springs provide added bounce, which is helpful when changing positions at night. “I could move around pretty easily,” said one tester. “This mattress is pretty firm and flat, and it’s easy to switch positions.”

Our testers also felt the Avocado Green’s edge support was top-notch, awarding it a score of 4/5. Edge support measures how much the mattress sinks when you sit or lie on its edge. Mattresses with good edge support make it easier to tie your shoes on the edge of the bed or rise from the mattress to stand. “Sitting down on the edge, I felt very supported,” said one tester. “I could easily sit or exit the bed. The mattress doesn’t collapse much."

The Avocado Green’s Talalay latex layer is open-celled (it looks like Swiss cheese) to promote airflow. And while folks who sleep super hot may not notice a difference, our testers thought the Avocado Green did well at dissipating heat. “I could feel it heating up under me, but not in a bad way,” said one tester. “I think it has good temperature regulation from the soft and cozy cover.” The Avocado Green earned 3/5 for cooling. Adding the best cooling sheets to your Avocado mattress might help improve the experience.
Who is the Avocado Green right for?
Our testers enjoyed the Avocado Green during testing, especially when sleeping on their backs and stomachs. The bed's pressure relief and firmness may appeal to people seeking support for lower-back discomfort. The Green is responsive, so those who change positions throughout the night may also enjoy it.
The bounce that makes the Avocado Green so responsive and easier to change positions on led to a lower motion isolation score of 3/5. The bed is bouncy enough that if your partner gets in and out, you'll likely be able to feel it if you're a light sleeper.

| Have chronic pain | Yes |
| Feel hot at night | No |

Who should keep looking for their perfect mattress?
- Side sleepers. Our side-sleeping testers found the Avocado a bit firm. Some noted they experienced pressure points rather than pressure relief. But the Avocado Green comes in three firmness options, and we tested the medium one. Side sleepers might have better luck with the plush option.
- Sleepers on a budget. If you want to buy a latex mattress without emptying your bank account, the Birch Natural might be a better choice. At $1,874 for a queen, it’s about half the cost of the Avocado Green.
- Light sleepers who share a bed. This mattress earned 3/5 for motion isolation. The bounce that makes the Avocado Green so good for switching positions might make the mattress a bit too bouncy. Light sleepers and those who sleep with a partner may want to keep looking.
How much do Avocado mattresses cost?
Avocado is a luxury organic mattress brand, and its mattresses cost between $1,599–$8,499 for a queen size. The most affordable Avocado mattress is the Eco Organic at $899 for a twin. At the other end of the scale, the Grand Luxe Mattress costs $11,000 for a California king.
Customizing the firmness affects the cost of your Avocado Green mattress. The firm model is $170 less than the standard medium, while the plush model is $95 more. Shipping is free for Avocado mattresses, and you can finance through Affirm. White-glove delivery costs $249, and removing your old mattress is an extra $30.
Even at this price point, the Avocado Green is one of the most affordable latex mattresses we’ve tested. The WinkBed EcoCloud ($2,856 for a queen) and the Saatva Latex Hybrid ($2,599 for a queen) are both organic latex mattresses. But they’re a bit steeper in price.

How to use an Avocado mattress
Avocado ships its mattresses compressed in a cardboard box. If you’re assembling your Avocado mattress, do so with caution and with another person. Place the cardboard box on top of the bed frame. Open the box slowly.
Latex mattresses can be heavy. Your mattress box may weigh more than 100 pounds. We recommend that you don’t try to unbox your Avocado mattress alone.
For $249, you can add white-glove delivery to your purchase. This means Avocado’s shipping provider delivers your mattress and sets it up inside your home for you.
Is an Avocado mattress right for you?
Avocado is known for its firm latex mattresses and dedication to natural materials. In our testing, Avocado performed well for pressure relief. When we surveyed older adults about what prompted their last mattress purchase, “relief from pain while sleeping” was a popular answer.2 If you experience pain while you sleep, an Avocado mattress might help—especially if you’re a back or stomach sleeper.
If you’re wondering how to choose the right Avocado mattress for you, consider the following:
- What is your sleep position? (Our testing shows that side sleepers might get a little less relief out of the Avocado Green.)
- How much do you care about natural materials in your mattress?
- Does your budget allow for a luxury mattress?
- Would sturdy edge support be worth Avocado’s price tag?
- Will the motion transfer and bounce bother you if you sleep with a partner or big pets?
Frequently asked questions
What is Avocado's return policy?
As long as you use a mattress protector, you can return your Avocado mattress after 30 days. But Avocado charges a $99 return fee and does not refund original shipping costs. The full trial period is 365 nights. Check Avocado’s return policy before buying to confirm refund eligibility and timing.
How long should an Avocado mattress last?
Most mattresses last 7–10 years. Avocado insists “durability is a core part of sustainability,” and its warranty is designed to support that motto. The Avocado mattress warranty is 25 years, so you might be eligible for a free replacement.
Are Avocado mattresses too firm?
Avocado mattresses come in three firmness options. Our back- and stomach-sleeping testers loved the firmness of the medium model, but side sleepers might find it too firm and prefer the plush model.
Which mattress is better, Avocado or Saatva?
That depends on what you’re looking for. Both brands offer hand-tufted organic latex mattress options that are GOLS- and GREENGUARD-certified. The latex hybrid mattresses from both brands are not difficult to move around on. The Avocado Green offers better motion isolation, and our stomach sleepers felt less pressure on it. But the Saatva Latex had better edge support when lying down (5/5 from our testers).
