What our testers thought of the Soundbright Discovery

The Soundbright Discovery is the brand’s most popular BTE model. It offers more features than the Mini. You can take calls or listen to music directly through the Discovery hearing aids and control the volume and settings using the app. This makes the Discovery a good fit for people who want to adjust volume throughout the day. 

Our older adult testers liked the clear, natural sound quality in one-on-one settings. They gave the Discovery their top rating (5/5) for how well it handled close conversations. “My partner’s voice sounds very natural to me,” said Sheila, one of our testers. “Their volume is slightly elevated with identical pitch and tone. The voice was crystal clear and nicely amplified.” Sheila was also able to tell where the sound was coming from when her partner moved around. “I could hear them equally in each position,” she said. “I could also tell where the sound was coming from in the room.” This makes the Soundbright Discovery a strong choice for everyday talking and time at home.

Testers did note some limitations of the Discovery hearing aids. “The noise cancelling wasn’t the greatest,” said Sheila. That made it more difficult to hear in settings with a lot of background noise. But the biggest challenge was hearing at a distance. We tested the devices at around 90 feet (about the distance between each base in baseball). “I had to really focus and at times was straining to hear,” said Sheila. “It was a struggle. I am surprised that this model wasn't picking up the sound. I turned off noise cancelling, put the device in several different sound modes, and bumped up the volume, and it still was struggling to pick up the noise in a meaningful way.” She gave these hearing aids a 2/5 for distance hearing.

Overall, the Discovery offers more features and flexibility than the Mini, but it does best in closer, quieter settings rather than busy or far-away listening.

What our testers thought of the Soundbright Horizon Pro

The Horizon Pro is one of the brand’s higher-end models. It is nearly double the price of the Discovery and has similar streaming features. The major difference our testers noted was how much better the Horizon Pro handled speech in noisy environments. It contains technology that automatically adjusts to the current noise level and focuses on what you want to hear (speech) and not what you don’t (background noise). 

Our older adult testers found the Horizon Pro fit comfortably and discreetly. “Once you get it in the curved part of your ear canal, it fits really snug and does not bother you at all,” said Chris, one of our older adult testers. “I did notice one move around slightly when I started laughing, but when walking around or bending down, it remained snug.” The devices were mostly concealed from view. “I did see the body of the hearing aid behind [a tester’s] ear, but even with his short hairstyle it was very discreet,” said one tester. “If someone had longer hair, you would not see it at all.”

Like the Discovery, the Horizon Pro is controlled through an app. Our testers said that the app is “very intuitive and isn’t overwhelming whatsoever.” At the same time, some found the settings a bit confusing because modes like speech, comfort, and noisy environment can feel similar. But overall, the added control and features give the Horizon Pro an edge over more basic models, making it a stronger option for people who want more ways to adjust their sound volume throughout the day.

Based on our research (testing for this model is pending), the Soundbright Mini doesn’t require a lot of setup. There is no app, just a single button you press to switch among three sound modes. You can charge it, place it in your ear, and go about your day. In contrast, the other models in this Soundbright hearing aids review require an app to control and may take more time to learn. 

The Mini does make some trade-offs for its small size and affordable price. With only six processing channels compared to the Discovery’s eight and the Horizon Pro’s 24, the Mini does not perform as well in noisy places as those models. It works best in quiet settings, like watching TV or having a one-on-one talk.
