Other adjustable beds we reviewed
While there are other suitable options, not every adjustable bed made the cut. We considered many adjustable bed bases beyond our top 10, including the below models from Serta, DreamCloud, and Lucid.
Serta: The Serta Motion Air Adjustable Base is a decent option if you’re on a budget. But beyond the wireless remote and silent motor, it doesn’t offer much in terms of advanced features, like USB charging ports, smart technology, or customization.
DreamCloud: In addition to smart features and an easy-to-use remote, the DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame offers an anti-snore setting and targets sleepers who experience back pain. But it’s not the best option for couples who have different sleep habits and isn’t the most affordable option on the market.
Lucid: The Lucid L300 Adjustable Bed Frame is a budget-friendly option that comes with a programmable remote and USB ports, but that’s about it. Unfortunately, this adjustable bed does not come with massage options. Plus, the brand recommends a mattress as thick as 12 inches for maximum comfort, which could make it hard to get in and out of bed for some older adults experiencing reduced mobility.
What to consider when buying an adjustable bed frame
Adjustable beds come in a variety of sizes, like twin XL, queen, split queen, king, and split king adjustable beds.
Here are the most important factors to consider when purchasing an adjustable bed frame:
- Price
- Features
- Mattress compatibility
- Weight limit
- Trial period
- Warranty
- Delivery and assembly
- Sleeping alone vs. with a partner
Price
Adjustable bed prices can range from around $1,000 to more than $5,000 for the most advanced models. The price of an adjustable bed depends on many factors, like the number and type of features included and the reputation of the brand. According to the results of our recent survey of adjustable bed owners, both price and features were the most important factors to respondents.
Before shopping for an adjustable bed, it’s important to decide whether you’ll also need a new mattress. Purchasing a mattress along with your adjustable base can easily double the cost.
For older adults specifically, an adjustable bed frame may improve quality of life. “If an adjustable bed provides a better quality of life in their current environment, then it may be worth the investment,” said Erin Blakely, a licensed nursing home administrator with a master’s degree in social work specializing in gerontology. “The costs of an adjustable bed may be offset by being able to stay living independently longer.”
Features
Some of the most commonly offered features are outlined in the table below.
Feature | Description |
---|---|
Massage | Massage is great for comfort and muscle relaxation, but it also has medical benefits. Massage can improve circulation throughout the body and relieve pain and tension from sore or stiff areas. |
Lighting | Many adjustable beds come equipped with under-bed LED lighting to illuminate the area under and around the edge of the bed, potentially reducing the risk of falling at night. |
USB ports | USB ports built into the adjustable bed frame offer a power source for charging devices without having to reach or get out of bed. |
Preset positions | Adjustable bed models may come with one-touch preset positions, meaning you can press one button on the remote and the bed adjusts to the preset position you prefer. The most common preset adjustable bed positions are anti-snore and zero gravity. |
Wall-hugging technology | Thanks to mobile joints that sit underneath your mattress, wall-hugger technology means you'll remain in place when lowering and raising the position of your adjustable bed. This can be an important feature if you have a headboard, footboard, or rail system. |
Zero-clearance vs. non-zero-clearance
Some adjustable beds are standalone pieces, while others can be used with your current platform bed, which is where zero-clearance comes in. A zero-clearance base can be placed on top of the panels on your existing platform bed to make it compatible with an adjustable bed base. On the other hand, a non-zero-clearance base stands on its own and is not meant to be used with an existing bed frame.
Mattress compatibility
Before purchasing an adjustable bed, you’ll want to decide whether you plan to buy a new mattress or keep your current one. This decision will affect your overall budget, as a new mattress can cost as much as (if not more than) the adjustable bed base itself. If you plan to purchase a new mattress with your adjustable base, check which mattresses are compatible with each model. Most adjustable bed brands will recommend one of their mattresses to ensure proper fit.
Innerspring mattresses are generally not recommended for use with adjustable bed bases. Due to their construction, the metal springs are not designed to withstand the flexing and bending of an adjustable base.
Weight limit
The stated weight capacity of an adjustable base is related to the ability of the mechanical parts to move the mattress with weight on top of it. While a bed in a flat position can likely support the stated weight limit (or more), the motors and parts involved in raising and lowering portions of the bed can get overloaded and break or malfunction under more than the stated weight limit.
Note: If you sleep with a partner and are looking to purchase a split model, the weight limit refers to each side of the split bed base. If the stated weight limit of a split king adjustable bed is 650 pounds, that means the split base can accommodate 650 pounds on each side.
Trial period
A trial period refers to the return window, or period of time you can use your adjustable bed and decide to either keep it or return it. If you are unsure if you will enjoy an adjustable bed, you may want to select an adjustable bed with a long trial period.
Warranty
Warranty coverage for adjustable beds varies from no warranty coverage up to a full lifetime warranty. The wording of warranty policies can be confusing, so it’s helpful to understand the warranty before purchasing your adjustable bed. Most warranties will cover original workmanship and materials for a certain period of time.
Warranties may or may not cover electrical components, and typically adjustable bed warranties do not offer coverage for any damage caused by improper use, like exceeding the weight limit or water damage. Also pay attention to whether the warranty covers any labor or shipping costs.
Delivery and assembly
Delivery and assembly options are important factors to consider when buying an adjustable bed, especially for those with physical limitations. Many adjustable bed brands offer the option of “white glove delivery,” which means delivery and setup of the adjustable bed in your home. Once assembly and delivery is complete, the delivery team will remove all shipping and packing materials, leaving you with nothing to clean up.

Most survey respondents stated that it was important to buy from a brand that removes their old bed for them.
If you decide against white glove delivery, or choose to buy a model that doesn’t offer it, you will be responsible for assembling the bed yourself.

We asked survey respondents to rate their experience setting up their adjustable bed themselves, from easy to very difficult.
Sleeping alone vs. with a partner
When you consider the features you’d like to have in an adjustable bed, you also need to consider your partner’s needs and preferences when making your selection. This can be as simple as choosing a split base so you and your partner can adjust your positions independently, but there are additional considerations. For example, automatic snore adjustment (the bed detects snoring and responds by raising the head) could disrupt you or your partner’s sleep.
Pros and cons of adjustable beds
Before you make the decision on whether an adjustable bed is right for you and your sleep needs, make sure to weigh the pros and cons.
Health benefits of adjustable beds
In our Reviews Team’s survey of 1,000 adjustable bed users, more than 40% of respondents reported their primary motivation for purchasing an adjustable bed was increased comfort and pain relief. [2] MedlinePlus. Back Pain. Found on the internet at https://medlineplus.gov/backpain.html This isn’t surprising, considering back pain affects eight out of 10 people at some point in their lives. [3] U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Get Enough Sleep. Found on the internet at https://health.gov/myhealthfinder/healthy-living/mental-health-and-relationships/get-enough-sleep
Older adults cite various health benefits from using adjustable beds. For example, 69.4% said they have an easier time getting into and out of their adjustable beds, compared to standard beds.
Overall, 87.6% of the survey participants reported improved sleep. Here’s the breakdown of sleep quality improvement by health condition:
- Chronic pain: 88.5%
- Snoring: 90%
- Acid reflux: 90%
- Insomnia: 89.7%
- Mobility concerns: 85.7%
Difference between an adjustable bed and an adjustable mattress
An adjustable bed has a base with a motor that can be moved into different positions by adjusting the head and/or foot of the bed. Some adjustable bed bases come with additional features, such as built-in massage options and under-bed lighting.
On the other hand, adjustable mattresses, which may also be referred to as “smart” mattresses, can change their firmness level thanks to interchangeable springs or installed air chambers. The goal of each is different, though. An adjustable bed base is meant to provide solutions to help ease health-related concerns that affect your sleep quality, such as breathing issues caused by sleep apnea (snoring) or heart failure, while an adjustable mattress is simply meant to help you adjust the firmness of your mattress according to your daily needs, which can help to alleviate pain and discomfort and improve your sleep quality.
Best Adjustable Bed Frames: Bottom line
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute credits poor sleep with an increased risk of chronic diseases and issues like coronary heart disease, hypertension, stroke, and hormonal imbalances. Whether your primary concern is cost, advanced features, or a generous trial period and warranty, you can find the best adjustable bed and be on your way to more comfortable and restful sleep.
