A good night’s sleep helps you support your mental health, immune system, and other essential functions. But did you know that your sleeping position could impact the quality of your rest?

According to a small 2022 study, back sleepers had slightly worse sleep quality than people who sleep in other positions. The back sleepers in the study tended to wake more often than their side-sleeping counterparts. Additionally, sleeping on one’s back can negatively influence obstructive sleep apnea severity.

If that sounds like you, then choosing a mattress built with back sleeping in mind might help you break the cycle and find more supportive, restorative sleep. Below, find our top mattresses for back sleepers, and get more expert-approved tips on choosing the best mattress for you.

Our expert take

The Saatva Classic puts a supportive spin on the classic innerspring mattress. The mattress features a supportive innerspring base with 416 individual coils. The next layer features a set of coils, which are firmer toward the middle of the mattress to support the back and keep the spine neutral. The next layer is a strip of memory foam that promotes spinal alignment for pressure relief. Finally, the quilted top provides a plush, breathable sleeping surface.

During testing, our Reviews Team found the Saatva Classic’s zoned lumbar support comfortable and ideal for most back sleepers. That said, taller or shorter-than-average people may need to adjust where they lay on the bed to take full advantage of the support zones. For example, our mattress tester was 5 feet, 3 inches tall, and found they needed to scoot down slightly to align their lower back with the lumbar support.

We tried the “luxury firm” option, which we give a 7 out of 10 for firmness, with 10 being the most firm. But the Saatva Classic also comes in two other firmness options, plush soft and firm. All versions of the Saatva Classic are made with eco-friendly materials, like organic cotton, and have no toxic flame retardants or fiberglass.

Additional Information

The Saatva Classic is a luxurious innerspring mattress featuring coils, foam, and a pillow top that work together for maximum back support. Back sleepers should find this comfortable, but side and combination sleepers can also find relaxing positions.

Pros and cons of the Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress
Pros Seven support zones designed for full body support and pressure relief 365-night trial Great motion isolation, minimizing sleep disturbances for couples Cons Shorter warranty than some competitors Not recommended for sleepers weighing 130 pounds or less
Our expert take

If you want a luxury mattress that doesn’t break the bank, the Emma Hybrid Comfort should be on your radar. A queen costs $1,319 regularly, and the brand sometimes offers sales with the opportunity to save as much as 50%.

The mattress features a medium-firm hybrid design with inner springs and memory foam. It also features seven different zones designed to keep your spine aligned. While our testers didn’t find the support zones particularly noticeable, they did like the memory foam construction. It offered a gentle, cradling effect without a “sinking” feeling.

What’s more, the Emma Hybrid Comfort also has a subtle bounce, which helps you easily change from your side to your back or vice versa. At the same time, the mattress also provides good motion isolation, which is ideal if you or your partner are prone to tossing and turning.

The mattress cover is also removable and washable, which is convenient for cleaning. That said, our testers found some of the stitching on the cover sloppy and questioned the long-term durability of the material.

Additional Information

The Emma Hybrid comfort combines coils and memory foam to create a comfortable sleeping experience that’s also budget-friendly. It’s easy to shift around on top of the mattress, but it also isolates movement well, so you won’t wake up your partner when changing positions.

Our recommendation

Pros and cons of the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress
Pros Zoned lumbar support Great edge support for sleeping and sitting Designed to promote breathability Cons No in-home delivery and setup One of the priciest on our list May not be firm enough for heavier (250 pounds or more) sleepers
Our expert take

If you often wake up with achy hips, a mattress with good pressure relief, like the Helix Midnight Luxe, should be on your radar.

The mattress features a hybrid design with coils concentrated towards the hip area. The Helix Midnight Luxe is specially designed to relieve pressure and keep the spine aligned. Our Reviews Team found that the model conformed to the body without pushing against the lower back and gave it a firmness rating of 5.5 out of 10.

What’s more, the mattress features good edge support, which could make it easy to get out of bed with a sore hip. It’s also on the taller side at 13.5″ tall, so you won’t have to bend as far to get in and out of bed.

Thanks to the coils, the Helix Midnight Luxe is fairly bouncy, making it easy to shift around on the mattress. But, we found that it doesn’t isolate motion well, so it may not be ideal for couples. The mattress is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it contains no harmful chemicals. The default cover is also hypoallergenic.

This mattress comes in four different firmness levels: plush, luxury firm, firm, and comfort plus. Our Reviews Team gave the luxury firm version a solid 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. It’s bouncy and contours nicely to the body, which should keep your spine neutral when lying on your back.

The Nolah Evolution features seven different layers, including a coiled base organized into support zones. It also features layers of unique “air foam,” which the brand claims is cooler and more durable than traditional memory foam. Our testers found that laying on this mattress felt like a “gentle hug,” and it was easy to push up and move around. Although, they didn’t find anything remarkable about the cooling effects.

Pros and cons of the WinkBeds Original mattress
Pros Bouncy and easy-to-change positions Good motion isolation Four firmness options Cons Trial period not as generous as others on our list
Our expert take

If you often shift between your side and back, you’re probably looking for a mattress that can support you in all different positions. If so, the WinkBeds Original should be on your radar.

The WinkBeds Original combines zoned coils and a foam-infused pillow top, which should keep your spine aligned, regardless of whether you’re on your side or your back. Our Reviews Team found this mattress supportive and bouncy, and it was easy to roll into different positions.

What’s more, while most innerspring mattresses transfer motion, the WinkBeds Original isolates motion well, thanks to its gel-based foam. The Reviews Team noticed very little movement during the testing process—even when someone jumped on the opposite side of the bed. That could come in handy if you sleep with a partner since you’re less likely to wake them when shifting positions.

The WinkBeds comes in three different firmness options, but we tested the luxury firm option, which scored 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

Additional Information

Our Reviews Team gave WinkBeds Original high marks for back and side sleepers and found that it was easy to change positions. Thanks to its motion isolation, you should also be less likely to disturb your partner as you shift.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

Pros and cons of the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress
Pros Three firmness options Keeps the spine neutral Cons Priciest on our list No free white glove delivery
Our expert take

If you have a condition like osteoarthritis, you’ll likely want a mattress that provides a balance between good support and plushness to ease your joints.

The Bear Elite Hybrid fits the bill. It features zoned support coils that curve with your body. Our Reviews Team gave it a solid 5 out of 5 for pressure relief. We tested the medium version of the Bear Elite Hybrid, which we gave a firmness score of 6.5 out of 10. But the mattress also comes in soft and firm options for those who’d prefer a different experience.

This model is plush and inviting while remaining supportive. The quilted cover is soft to the touch with a fluffy, cloud-like quality. It contains two layers of foam: One that provides additional body-contouring support and another infused with copper, which is meant to promote coolness. However, the Reviews Team found it had average breathability.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is also GREENGUARD Gold-certified for low chemical emissions and comes with a lifetime warranty.

Pros and cons of the Birch Natural mattress
Pros Medium-firm firmness makes it a good choice for back pain Made with certified organic and natural materials Offers in-home setup and removal for a fee Cons Short trial period compared to others on this list No memory foam
Our expert take

When it comes to lower back pain, it’s important to choose a mattress that’s just right. A too-firm mattress may not offer good pressure relief on the joints, while a too-soft mattress won’t offer enough support. Research has found that a medium-firm mattress is typically the most beneficial. [2] Caggiari G, et al. What Type of Mattress Should be Chosen to Avoid Back Pain and Improve Sleep Quality? Review of the Literature. Journal of Orthopedics and Traumatology. Dec. 8, 2021

The Birch Natural ranks 6.5 out of 10 on firmness, putting it in the “Goldilocks zone” for back pain. Like other mattresses on our list, the Birch Natural features zoned coils that provide lumbar support. Our Reviews Team found that the mattress conformed and contoured to the lower back while keeping the spine neutral. It earned a solid 5 out of 5 for back sleepers during testing.

From our expert

If you have lower back pain, Nicole Hernandez, doctor of physical therapy, recommends putting a pillow under your knees to help you get more comfy. “This puts the hips in a flexed position, which takes slack off the hip flexors and prevents the pelvis from tilting forward, which prevents the back from feeling like it’s arching. A pillow can fix that easily,” she said.

Additionally, the Birch Natural uses non-toxic and responsibly sourced materials. The mattress does not contain memory foam. Instead, it uses an organic cotton pillow topper for comfort and organic wool for further plushness and fire resistance. It also features natural latex to provide pressure relief.

The mattress materials are Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified as genuinely organic and GREENGUARD-Gold certified. Birch also offers a 25 year warranty for the mattress.

Additional Information

The Birch Natural features a supportive, zoned spring base topped with organic cotton and wool layers. It creates a true medium-firm mattress experience that those with back pain may find comfortable.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

  • People with lower back pain who benefit from extra support in the lumbar area
  • People who want a true medium-firm feel
  • Anyone who wants a mattress made with organic and natural materials

Who may want to avoid it

  • People who want a less expensive mattress
  • People who like the feel of memory foam

Pros and cons of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress
Pros Three firmness levels to choose from Budget-friendly price Cons No support zones $99 fee to return the mattress
Our expert take

While memory foam can help curve and hug the body, you might not enjoy the “quicksand” feeling of sinking into a pure foam mattress. And while a traditional pillow-top mattress can provide support with coils, you might miss the contouring qualities of foam.

Luckily, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid offers the best of both worlds. It’s a true hybrid mattress with a coiled base, two layers of foam, and a quilted pillow top. It comes in firm, medium, and soft support levels with the option to add a cooling pillow top. We tested the medium option, which our Reviews Team gave a 6 out of 10 for firmness.

The top layer is plush and provides a gentle cradling effect but without the “sinking” feeling of a full memory foam mattress. Instead, our testers compared it to lying in a hammock. Thanks to the supportive coils, it’s easy to move around on top of the mattress, and it has a nice bounce. At the same time, the foam also helped provide decent motion isolation. Our testers found it comfortable for back sleepers, but it lacks zoned supports like some other options on our list.

Additional Information

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid sells for a factory-direct price, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of a classic hybrid mattress at a low cost.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

  • People who like the contour of memory foam, but like the “bounce” of a coiled mattress
  • People who want a more budget-friendly mattress

Who may want to avoid it

  • People who like firmer mattresses
  • People who want targeted support zones

Bottom line

Whether you prefer a classical coiled mattress or a hybrid mattress with contouring memory foam, all of the above mattresses have our Reviews Team’s stamp of approval for back sleepers. To get the most out of your new mattress, it’s a good idea to pair it with an ergonomic pillow that supports proper spinal alignment. You may also consider an adjustable frame to find the perfect angle for a restful night’s sleep on your back.

Frequently asked questions

If you’re a back sleeper, it’s important to choose a mattress that keeps the spine neutral and supports your body’s natural curvature. [3] Yu E. What sleep positions are best for your back? Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. October 4, 2018. Though most of our top picks are hybrid models, memory foam and traditional innerspring mattresses can also offer a supportive, comfortable experience for back sleepers, but it depends on your personal preferences.

We’re fond of mattresses that use coils arranged in “support zones,” which are designed to contour around your body. For instance, the mattress might be firmer around the hip region to support your lower back. Most of the mattresses on our roundup feature a zoned coil system in the base with the exception of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid.

This may depend on your personal preference and your age. According to a 2020 conference paper, younger participants tended to prefer memory foam or latex mattresses for back sleeping. [4] Hou J, Zhang Y. The Influence of Mattress Material on Sleeping Comfort of Different Age. Man-Machine-Environment System Engineering. Sept. 29, 2020. At the same time, older participants preferred coil and pillow-top mattresses when lying on their backs.

Research suggests that a medium-firm mattress may minimize lower back pain. [2] Caggiari G, et al. What Type of Mattress Should be Chosen to Avoid Back Pain and Improve Sleep Quality? Review of the Literature. Journal of Orthopedics and Traumatology. Dec. 8, 2021 But some people may prefer a firmer or softer experience. Before purchasing, it can be a good idea to test some models first to get an idea of what you like. You can also take advantage of a brand’s trial period.
