Legion builds its supplements and protein powders around scientific research. The company is also transparent about its products' third-party testing results. In this Legion whey protein review, we take a closer look at what sets the brand apart from other powders. That includes its use of grass-fed dairy protein.

“Grass-fed dairy does have a nutritional edge,” said Melanie Murphy Richter, MS, RDN, a registered dietitian based in Santa Monica, California. Richter is a longevity and metabolic health expert and co-host of the Almost Forever podcast. Grass-fed tends to contain more health-promoting compounds than conventional dairy.1 These include omega-3s and certain antioxidants. But, she added, “Those benefits live mostly in the milk fat, and whey protein, especially isolate, has most of the fat removed.” For that reason, some debate whether grass-fed protein powders offer extra benefits.

For older adults looking to add more protein to their diets, Legion offers several options. For this review, we focused on Legion Whey+ Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate powder. Our testers rated its taste, mixability, and more. They liked the company’s commitment to using quality ingredients and limiting added sugar. They appreciated the brand's upfront third-party testing. Legion also has the longest return policy of any brand in our best protein powders for women roundup. Read on to learn whether Legion whey protein powder might be a good fit for you.

Why we recommend Legion protein powders

Mike Matthews, a certified personal trainer and author, founded Legion Athletics in 2014. His stated goal is to offer supplements that are based on scientific research. Legion says its products use research-backed ingredients and clearly labeled amounts. The company even has its own scientific advisory board to help guide its products.

Legion offers several types of protein powder, including whey, casein, and plant-based options. Its whey products include grass-fed and traditional varieties. It also contains protein concentrates and isolates. With many flavors to choose from, shoppers can compare options based on their tastes and dietary needs.

Legion Athletics is transparent about sharing third-party testing information for its products. This can help shoppers learn more about product quality and purity. It earned top marks in our third-party testing review. We also liked that the brand offers free shipping on the first order and a 365-day return policy. This gives shoppers more time to decide whether a product works for them.

Our experience with Legion Whey+ Grass-Fed Whey Protein Powder

Unlike many of its competitors, Legion Whey+ Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate comes in a resealable pouch, not a giant plastic container. Testers appreciated the included scoop and clear mixing instructions. The black-and-blue packaging is distinctive and clearly shows what you’ll find inside: 20 g of grass-fed protein per serving and no added sugar. Its formula earned a 5/5 in our ingredient review for being straightforward with minimal additives.

We also liked Legion’s third-party testing. Legion lists its third-party testing provider (Labdoor) on its website. It goes a step further by including a QR code with info about its grass-fed certification right on the bag. It also earned a 5/5 for third-party testing. This information helps shoppers understand the protein powder's quality and safety.

Testers liked how clearly the packaging for Legion Whey+ Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate powder spells out what’s in the product. But they were divided on its taste.

Our testers had mixed opinions about this powder’s flavor and texture. Legion offers Whey+ Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate powder in 26 flavors. We tested orange cream. “I actually like the flavor a lot,” one tester said. “It was pretty subtle to me and not overpowering or gross. I could drink the whole serving without feeling bloated.” But another tester was underwhelmed. “It’s very mild and just not something I personally find delicious,” she said. Experiences with mixability also varied. “My current protein powder chunks up a lot, and this one is completely smooth. There’s no grittiness,” said one tester. Another reported that the powder was “somewhat chalky and chunky” when mixed with 9 ounces of water.

What are the benefits of Legion protein powder?

Legion Whey+ Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate powder provides 20 g of grass-fed whey protein per serving. It can be a convenient way for older adults to fill protein gaps in their diets. Protein helps maintain muscle mass and strength.

According to Christiane Matey, MSHS, RDN, LDN, ABAAHP, a registered dietitian based in Mooresville, North Carolina, whey protein is a popular choice because it contains all the essential amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. The body needs them for muscle repair, immune function, and other processes.

This protein powder is made from the milk of Irish cows. But according to Richter, other factors matter more than whether the whey is grass-fed. “For older adults, the bigger priorities are 20–30 grams of protein per serving and low added sugar,” she said.

16% of older adults who replied to our survey said they had experienced unwanted side effects like an upset stomach after taking protein powder.3

What are the potential side effects of Legion protein powder?

Legion Whey+ Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate is generally suitable for many adults, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Sodium content: Some Legion flavors contain up to 310 milligrams of sodium per serving. People with high blood pressure, kidney disease, or other health conditions may need to limit sodium intake. Ask your health care professional whether the product fits your dietary needs.
  • Allergies and sensitivities: Legion Whey+ is made from milk, so those with a dairy allergy should avoid it. The product contains very little lactose. But people with lactose intolerance may still want to start with a small amount to see how they tolerate it. People who have trouble digesting dairy may prefer a plant-based protein powder.
  • Medication and health considerations: Kidney disease and other conditions like diabetes can affect protein needs. Talk with a health care provider before adding a protein supplement.
  • Heavy metals: Protein powders can contain varying levels of metals, including lead, cadmium, and arsenic. Heavy metals can be harmful when exposure builds up over time. So far, research suggests that typical protein powder use does not cause adverse health effects.2 “Plant-based powders such as soy, pea, rice, bean, and hemp tend to have more compared to whey-based powders,” Matey said.

How to take Legion Whey+ Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate Powder

Our testers followed the product label and mixed one scoop of Legion Whey+ with 8–10 ounces of water or milk. They had differing experiences with how well the powder dissolved. You can also blend it into a smoothie with fruit or yogurt to add nutrients and make it a more filling snack. On its own, this protein powder does not provide all the nutrients found in a balanced meal. It is not intended to be a meal replacement.

Who should consider Legion protein powder?

Legion Whey+ Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate powder may suit older adults who want a convenient way to increase their protein intake. It provides 20 g of protein per serving and has no added sugar. Legion is transparent about the powder's third-party testing results. But we had mixed feedback about its flavor and texture.

You should consider Legion protein if you:

  • Want a protein powder made with grass-fed whey
  • Are looking for a convenient way to add protein to your diet
  • Prefer a protein powder with no added sugar or artificial sweeteners
  • Value third-party testing and a generous return policy

You may consider other options if you:

  • Have a milk protein allergy or prefer to avoid dairy
  • Need a protein powder with more fiber or fat to help you feel full
  • Avoid or limit animal-based products in your diet
  • Do not enjoy the taste of stevia (a natural sweetener)
