Understanding accessibility and pain relief scores

Based on our testing, surveys, and focus groups with older adults, we created these two scores:

  • Accessibility score: The higher the score, the easier it is to get in and out of the bed and change positions.
  • Pain relief score: The higher the score, the more likely it can help relieve pain.

Our process testing the best king-size mattresses

It’s important for our mattresses to support mobility, so we paid close attention to edge support. Did the mattress's build help us get off the edge as we sat, or did we sink? We also looked at pain-relieving features like pressure relief and bounce.

Pain relief

Pain relief is a weighted combined score based on how well each mattress bounced and relieved pressure. It also accounts for edge support in both lying and sitting positions.

Pressure relief

Using a thermal imaging pressure mat that projects data onto a map, we had our testers lie down on their backs, their stomachs, and both sides. Mattresses that scored well on pressure relief would appear blue on the thermal image. Mattresses that didn’t relieve pressure—or caused pressure—would turn the thermal map red.

The Bear mattress didn’t trigger any pressure warnings during this stomach sleeping simulation.

Spinal support

We tested spinal support by evaluating mattresses for how well they contoured to our testers’ bodies. A mattress with good lower back support would align the testers’ spines into neutral positions.2 A good mattress for spinal support strikes a balance between firmness that keeps your spine aligned and enough give to contour to your body.

Firmness

First, we tested firmness by measuring sinkage. Next, we tested mattress support across all sleeping positions. Did our testers feel pressure or sinkage where they shouldn’t? Studies show that medium-firm mattresses best promote comfort and sleep.2 If your mattress is too hard, it can lead to contact pressure that can magnify any existing health problems.3

Sleeper weight

Weight can affect your sleep simply because it changes your relationship with your mattress. If you’re a lighter weight sleeper, firm mattresses that support the spines of heavy- and standard-weight sleepers won’t support you the same.

Likewise, higher-weight sleepers may find they sink too much on a bed that helps lighter weight sleepers with joint pain. For this reason, our testing team has a range of shapes and sizes.

What is or what is considered a king mattress?

A king mattress measures 76 inches by 80 inches. California king mattresses are even bigger, at 72 inches by 84 inches. Meanwhile, a split king mattress is not actually a king at all—it’s two twin mattresses side by side. Not sure you need a king? Take a look at our guide on choosing the best mattresses for your sleep needs.

How to choose a king mattress

There are quite a few factors that go into choosing a king mattress, once you’ve determined a king is the correct size for your needs. Given that most people opt for a king-size mattress because they sleep with a partner, motion isolation should be top of mind. Good motion isolation prevents you from stirring or waking up when your partner moves.

Hybrid construction

There’s a reason so many of the best king-size mattresses in this roundup are hybrids. Hybrid construction helps the mattress contour to your body. A hybrid mattress combines memory foam with the coils that come to mind when you think of classic innerspring mattresses.

The memory foam, usually in the topper, helps the bed conform to your body's contours. This helps with pressure relief, while the coils contribute to edge support and bounce.

Medium-firm to firm feel

Medium-firm is often a good mattress feel for spinal alignment, which is why the brand firmness of all the mattresses in this roundup does not exceed 6.5 out of 10.2

Cooling technologies

Many people choose a king-sized mattress because they sleep with a partner. So a bed that doesn’t reflect their partner’s body heat back at them is a benefit. Some of the hybrid mattresses on this list use breathable coils to provide cooling. Others, like the Silk & Snow, use gel-infused foam in the toppers.

Edge support and motion isolation

Edge support is important. It can help propel you off the bed to get from a sitting to standing position. It can also help keep you feel safely supported as you sleep close to the edge of the bed at night.

Trial periods and warranties:

All of the mattresses on this list have a trial period of 120 nights or longer. Trial periods are important when purchasing a mattress, because you can’t test for a good night’s sleep at a showroom. Warranties allow you to get a replacement mattress if an element breaks or is defective within the warranty period.

How much do the best king mattresses cost?

The best king-size mattresses in this roundup cost between $800–$2,800. King-size mattresses usually cost anywhere from $300–$500 more than queen-size mattresses from the same brand. For some brands, delivery is available, but it can cost extra. Other brands provide free white-glove delivery service. Yet more brands require you and a minimum of one other person to open a pressurized cardboard box.
