Understanding hair loss and its common causes
Male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness, is the most common form of hair loss in men. It is a chronic condition that is strongly linked to genetics. According to Dawn Queen, MD, of Park Avenue Dermatology in New York City, “androgenetic alopecia is thought to be a genetic condition due to a genetic sensitivity of the hair follicles to androgens. Specifically, the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a byproduct of testosterone, causes susceptible hair follicles to miniaturize over time. As hairs miniaturize, they become finer and shorter and over time may stop growing altogether.”
Dr. Queen said less commonly hair loss can be caused by telogen effluvium. This is a form of temporary hair shedding often following a major physiologic or psychological stressor. It can also be caused by alopecia areata. This is an autoimmune form of hair loss that causes well-defined patches of hair loss or even complete hair loss in some individuals. This form of hair loss may also be triggered by physiologic or emotional stressors. Finally, “scarring alopecias are a group of less common inflammatory hair disorders that may lead to permanent scarring and follicular loss,” Dr. Queen said. She added that “this makes early and accurate diagnosis paramount.”
Hair loss or hair thinning can also be caused by nutritional deficiencies or the side effects of certain medications.
Does Keeps work for hair loss?
Many Keeps products contain ingredients supported by clinical evidence, like minoxidil and finasteride. These are two FDA-approved medications for male pattern hair loss. Finasteride targets DHT, which is one of the main drivers of shrinking hair follicles. Minoxidil helps stimulate and maintain hair growth. Dutasteride, another DHT inhibitor similar to finasteride, is also often used to treat male pattern baldness. It is prescribed off-label, as its primary use is treating an enlarged prostate.
There are multiple factors when it comes to choosing between prescription and over-the-counter medications for hair loss. Viktoryia Kazlouskaya, MD, founder of Dermatology Circle in New York, shares that “prescription treatments are generally more reliable because we have much stronger clinical data behind them. With treatments such as finasteride and minoxidil, many patients can achieve improvement or at least slow down the progression of hair loss.”
Dr. Kazalouskaya said that the evidence for over-the-counter ingredients such as caffeine, saw palmetto, biotin, or retinoic acid is generally much more limited. “Biotin, for example, is unlikely to significantly improve pattern hair loss unless someone is actually deficient,” she said. Still, supplements and herbs may play a part in treating hair loss by treating nutritional deficiencies contributing to thinning hair.
