Oct. 22, 2025, Arlington, Virginia—The National Council on Aging (NCOA), the national voice for every person’s right to age well, is partnering with Humana Foundation to design and implement a program to reduce social isolation and enhance mental health among older adults.

“Aging well means physical health and mental well-being,” said Ramsey Alwin, NCOA President and CEO. “For too long, issues like mental health and social isolation have been stigmatized in our society, yet their effects on quality of life can be devastating. Our network of senior centers is the perfect place to start having real conversations about how older adults can build connections in their communities.”

An estimated one in five older adults experiences depression, anxiety, insomnia, substance use, or another mental health disorder, and 29% of older adults reported feeling isolated at least some of the time in 2024. A 2023 U.S. Surgeon General report linked chronic social isolation to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and dementia.

Using NCOA’s network of senior centers, the program will engage at least 90 community-based organizations over three years. It will feature small group conversations about social connection and mental wellness and encourage participants to create a personal and community social connection plan. In addition, community ambassadors at each location will be trained in Mental Health First Aid, and senior centers and the surrounding community will be equipped with resources to better recognize and address signs of mental health challenges in older adults.

“We believe that strong communities are built on meaningful connections,” said Humana Foundation CEO Tiffany Benjamin. “This partnership with NCOA reflects our commitment to supporting older adults in living healthier, more connected lives. By equipping senior centers with tools to strengthen belonging and mental wellness, we’re helping ensure that no one has to navigate aging alone.”
