Plank earned Best Overall in our best firm mattresses guide because it has the highest firmness level of all mattresses we’ve tested. Medium-firm mattresses have long been considered the gold standard for a good night’s sleep. But people with mobility issues or who need extra spinal support tend to benefit more from a firm mattress.1 With both a firm and an extra firm side, Plank’s mattress offers stability and structure that we believe can benefit older adults as they sleep.

Plank is owned by Brooklyn Bedding, which means there might be some overlap between the two brands’ offerings, but we focus on what sets Plank apart from other mattresses on the market.

In this Plank mattress review, we highlight what makes this brand unique, who might benefit from a firm mattress, and what to consider before choosing a mattress.

Our Top Pick

 Plank

  • Flippable mattress with a firm and extra firm side
  • Excellent edge support and stability for people with mobility issues
  • Earned Best Overall in our Best Firm Mattress guide

Why choose Plank?

Plank offers a very firm mattress for people looking for extra stability and support. The majority of the mattresses we’ve tested fall into the medium-firm range, which is about a 6.5 out of 10 on our scale. Plank’s firm side rates as an 8 out of 10, and its extra firm side rates as a 9 out of 10.

For people with mobility issues, a firm mattress can make it easier to shift positions during the night. And firm mattresses are recommended for higher-weight people because they create less sinkage.

We are especially impressed that Plank is able to achieve this firmness using only memory foam. Memory foam typically causes a sleeper to sink into the mattress, which makes it difficult to flip over easily. Our testers reported it was not difficult for them to move into different sleeping positions on the Plank.

Testers said it wasn’t difficult for them to move from one position to another on the Plank.

We also like how stable the edges are on the Plank mattress. Edge support is important for people who need to use their hands to push themselves to stand. An unstable edge, or one that sinks deeply when you sit on it, increases the chances of sliding off the bed or falling. That’s important because one-fourth of older adult falls happen at night.2 And of those nighttime falls, more than half were due to leaving bed to visit the bathroom, according to research.

Sturdy edges also help provide a sense of security while sleeping, so you don’t have to worry about falling off the edge. This means you can use the entire surface of your bed to sleep instead of avoiding getting too close to the edge.

But the Plank mattress’s firmness also means it’s not the best for people who want pain relief. The sturdiness means this mattress doesn’t cushion joints very well. And, if you’re a lighter-weight sleeper, you might find the lack of sinkage uncomfortable.

Understanding our scoring

Our mattress recommendations are based on our thorough research and testing. We created two scores:

  • Accessibility score: A combined score reflecting factors that make it easier for older adults to move around and get in and out of bed.
  • Pain relief score: A combined score reflecting factors that help relieve pain while in bed.

The Firm: Plank’s flagship mattress

The Plank Firm offers a truly firm sleep experience with excellent edge support. The dense memory foam stays cool during the night, and its motion isolation means you’re less likely to be woken up by a partner or a pet.

Our experience with the Plank Firm

When we tested the Plank Firm, we were impressed by how sturdy the memory foam construction was. The majority of mattresses we test fall into a medium-firm range, but Plank’s dense memory foam offers a truly firm sleeping experience. Our testers liked how the mattress had minimal sinkage when they laid down. “I didn't feel much sinkage at all,” said one tester, Patti, a 70-year-old average-weight side sleeper with arthritis who’s fallen out of bed in the past due to weak edges. “[I] feel like [I’m] staying on the top.” This means it’s easier to shift positions versus a traditional memory foam mattress, which has more sinkage and takes more effort to flip from side to side. “Although there is a little cushioning…it was easy to switch from back to side,” Patti said.

The Plank showed almost no motion in our seismograph study when we dropped and rolled a large barbell across the opposite side of the mattress.

Another benefit of memory foam is motion isolation. The foam absorbs movement, so if you’re sleeping next to another person or a pet, you’re less likely to feel it when they shift or get out of bed. We rated the Plank Firm a 5/5, meaning it’s a great option for people who are sensitive to other people moving around at night.

Even though memory foam typically traps heat, we found the Plank Firm does an excellent job at staying cool throughout the night.3 Plank also offers a GlacioTex Cooling Cover for $150. “The top feels pretty cold when I first touch it,” Patti said. “One thing about this mattress is I'm definitely sitting ‘on top’ of it, and so the sides aren't coming up to hug me. That makes it feel a little cooler since there's literally less fabric touching me.”

A temperature gun shows a screen that reads 61.8 degrees F
Though memory foam isn’t known for its cooling properties, we were impressed with how cool the Plank stayed through our temperature gun testing.

And we were very impressed by the mattress’s edge support, giving it a 5/5. When our testers tried to stand up from a seated position, they felt supported by the sturdy edge. “[I] didn't feel insecure when standing up,” Patti said. As someone who’s fallen out of bed before due to weak edges, Patti said she felt very secure sitting or lying down near the edge.

This is important for people who might need to use their hands when standing up. It reduces the chance of someone slipping off the edge and falling to the floor.

A woman lying on her side at the edge of a mattress
Testers loved the super strong edges of the Plank. They could lie right on the edge without feeling like they could fall off.

But the firmness of this mattress also has some drawbacks. The lack of cushioning increases pressure, so if you have pain or joint problems this mattress won’t provide much relief. If you want pain relief, the best hybrid mattresses might be a better choice for you. And for lighter-weight sleepers, the lack of sinkage can make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of a board (hence the name of the mattress, the “Plank”).

The biggest drawback of the Plank is its lack of pressure relief. The mattress didn’t do well in our pressure map testing, showing pressure in key points throughout each tester’s body.

Your mattress should provide the right amount of support and accommodation for your spine, as it will help take stress off sensitive muscles and joints.”

A queen costs $1,449, which is $450 more than the Plank Firm queen size.

Plank mattress price

Plank prices its mattresses competitively, offering a high-quality product for less than some of the other brands we’ve tested, like Saatva, which costs $1,799 for a queen size. Plank’s pricing is comparable to other budget-minded companies like DreamCloud, which also costs about $1,000 for a queen-sized mattress. For more information, see our DreamCloud mattress review

Is a Plank mattress right for you?

Plank mattresses are right for you if you enjoy sleeping on a truly firm mattress. The lack of cushioning and support might make this mattress feel uncomfortable for some people, especially lighter-weight sleepers or those with chronic pain. But it’s a great choice for higher-weight sleepers, people with mobility concerns, or those who just prefer a really firm mattress. We like that you can flip this mattress between a firm and extra-firm side for a more custom sleep experience.

We also think this mattress is a good fit for people with mobility issues who need extra support while pushing themselves to stand. The sturdy edges offer stability so you don’t sink into the mattress and have to work harder to get up.

And we like that Plank uses memory foam for its construction. In our 2025 March survey, 50% of respondents said they chose a memory foam mattress, making it a popular choice.4 This mattress’s motion isolation and cooling technology make it great for both people who sleep with a partner or pet or who get hot at night.

Plank also doesn’t offer white-glove delivery service, meaning you’ll be responsible for moving the mattress to its frame. If you don’t have help, maneuvering a heavy box like this could be dangerous or difficult. If you need assistance in moving the mattress, an option like Saatva (which comes with free white-glove delivery) might be a better choice. You can learn more in our Saatva mattress review.

Before choosing a mattress, ask yourself these questions:

  • What sleep issues am I hoping to solve with a new mattress?
  • Do I wake up easily from others’ movements?
  • Am I a hot sleeper?
  • Do I prefer the feel of a truly firm mattress or do I like something more supportive?
