In the past, mattress buyers were told to flip their new mattress regularly for even wear. Today, most of the best mattresses no longer require this step, especially hybrid mattresses. They are designed with layers in a specific order to provide the best support and comfort. But there are exceptions, as you will find in this Layla mattress review. Layla took a different approach, making mattresses with two sleeping surfaces. One side feels softer, while the other is firmer, so sleepers can simply flip the mattress depending on which they prefer.

To see how well this unique design works, we had older adults test the Layla Hybrid and the Layla Memory Foam mattress. Layla also offers the Layla Essential, which is not flippable. We did not test that model for this review. When trying the Hybrid and Memory Foam models, we tested both sides of each mattress. We focused on the softer side of each, which is about a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Our testers shared their thoughts on comfort, support, motion isolation, and ease of moving around in bed. Our hands-on testing helped us understand which sleepers may enjoy Layla’s unique flippable design. We also compared the similarities and differences between the hybrid and memory foam models. Read on to see if a Layla mattress might be the right fit.

Why choose Layla?

Layla offers something we don’t see from many mattress brands. Instead of making a mattress with only one feel, the company gives sleepers two firmness options in a single mattress. If your comfort needs change over time, sleepers can simply flip the mattress instead of buying a new one. We also like that Layla uses CertiPUR-US certified foams. These are made without certain harmful chemicals and meet standards for low emissions.

The brand pays close attention to the materials it uses. Layla’s memory foam is denser and more supportive than many foams found in mattresses at a similar price. That can help the mattress keep its shape longer while providing steady support, even at the edges. Another feature that helps Layla stand out is its copper-infused memory foam. Copper is known for its antimicrobial properties and may also help with temperature regulation.1,2

Overall, Layla’s mattresses performed well in our real-world testing and are well-made with quality materials. The mattresses also come at a mid-range price. These details make Layla stand out as a brand worth considering as one of the best mattresses for older adults

Layla Memory Foam Mattress: Cool and contouring

Like the Hybrid, the Layla Memory Foam Mattress has a soft side and a firm one, so sleepers can choose which feels best. We tested both sides but spent most of our time on the softer side. It offered a deep, body-hugging feel without making it hard to move.

How to use a Layla mattress

Using a Layla mattress starts with unboxing it. The brand ships its mattresses compressed and rolled up in a box. To use it, bring the box to the room where you want the mattress, open it, and carefully remove the plastic wrap. Once it’s out, the mattress will expand on its own. Most people let it fully expand for a day or two before sleeping on it.

Since Layla ships by FedEx Ground, there is no white-glove delivery service available. This is where the mattress delivery team will set up your new mattress for you and often take an old mattress away. But the set-up process for a Layla mattress is simple enough for most people to do on their own. Keep in mind that the Layla hybrid weighs 103 pounds for a queen size, and the Layla memory foam mattress weighs 69 pounds for a queen. This will also be important to know when it comes to flipping your mattress.

One thing that makes many Layla beds different is their flippable design. One side feels softer, and the other side feels firmer. You can try both and see what feels best for you, or alternate. Many Layla mattress reviews mention that switching sides is a way to change the feel without buying a new mattress. A simple mattress protector and regular sheet changes can also help keep your mattress clean and in good shape.

Who should use a Layla mattress

Layla mattresses can work well for many kinds of sleepers. Side sleepers may enjoy the softer side of these mattresses because it cushions the shoulders and hips. In our testing, Layla mattresses had high scores for side sleeping pressure relief. People looking for the best mattress for side sleepers may want to consider Layla.

Back and stomach sleepers may prefer the firmer side for extra support. Our testers rated both Layla mattresses very highly for back pressure relief on both the soft and firm sides. Layla could also be a good choice for people in the market for the best mattress for back sleepers

Couples may also like Layla mattresses. In our testing, the Layla Hybrid and the Layla Memory Foam mattress both limited motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other. This can help you and your partner rest undisturbed.

Layla mattresses are made with foams certified to be free from several harmful chemicals and without fiberglass. Sleepers concerned about harsh chemicals in their mattresses may appreciate this brand.

How to choose a Layla mattress for you

Choosing the right Layla bed starts with knowing how you sleep. Stomach sleepers felt more supported by the hybrid than the memory foam model in our testing. If you enjoy the close feel of memory foam, the Layla Memory Foam Mattress may be a good fit. If you want more support, stronger edges, and better airflow, the hybrid model may be the better choice. Many Layla hybrid mattress reviews, including this one, point out that the coils help the mattress feel more responsive.

The Layla memory foam mattress earned higher scores for regulating temperature and absorbing motion. Memory foam could be the better choice if sleeping cool and undisturbed by a partner are priorities. The Layla Hybrid had better edge support and was more responsive. If you like a bouncier mattress, or want one that is easier to get in and out of, the hybrid might be the better option. This mattress also rivaled some of the best hybrid mattresses when it comes to motion isolation. If you sleep with a partner, it could be worth considering.

Think about your favorite sleep position, body type, and how warm you sleep at night. The hybrid will cost more than memory foam, so consider your budget as well. Reading a Layla mattress review can also help you compare the two models. The biggest difference comes down to whether you want an all-foam mattress or a hybrid with both foam and coils.

How much do Layla mattresses cost?

The Layla mattresses in this review cost $749–$1,749 for a queen size before any discounts or promotions. Layla offers free shipping in the contiguous United States, a 120-night home trial period, and warranties on all materials and workmanship. We tested the Layla Hybrid and Layla Memory Foam mattresses. Layla also offers the Essential mattress, though it only comes in one firmness.

The Layla customer experience

Layla earned an 8.2/10 for customer service. It offers a 120-night sleep trial, a lifetime warranty on its memory foam mattress, and a 10-year warranty on its hybrid mattresses. If you decide the mattress is not right for you, return shipping is free. This makes the process easier than with many brands.

The company ships mattresses by FedEx Ground, so there is no white-glove delivery service available for in-home setup. Still, setup is fairly simple because the mattress arrives compressed in a box and expands after you open it.

  • Trial period: 120 nights
  • Shipping: Free in the continental United States
  • Warranty: Lifetime limited or 10-year limited
