Birch Natural Living, an offshoot of Helix Sleep, is known for its focus on natural and organic materials. But as we explain in this Birch mattress review, the brand has more going for it than just high-quality natural materials. In our testing, it was a top performer for edge support, accessibility when getting in and out of bed, and side and back pressure relief.

The Birch brand was launched in 2019 by Helix, which manufactures some of the top-performing mattresses we've tested. You can read more about those in our Helix mattress review. Birch mattresses are similarly high quality, but they’re made with certified organic materials, including cotton, wool, and latex.

For this review, we tested the Birch Natural latex hybrid mattress to see how it feels and performs. We also looked at three other models from the brand that we haven't tested yet.

Why choose Birch?

Birch is an offshoot of the Helix mattress brand, designed to focus on all-natural, sustainable sleep products. Birch uses natural, certified organic materials in its mattresses instead of synthetic materials found in many conventional mattresses. Some research suggests certain chemicals found in many traditional mattresses, especially those made with memory or polyurethane foam, may lead to poorer sleep quality

“Some natural and organic materials in mattresses like natural latex, organic cotton, and wool can be attractive due to the breathability and temperature control properties they offer,” said Blen Tesfu, MD, sleep specialist with Wezlo, an online wellness platform. “Also, natural materials generally require less chemical treatment when being produced. People who are extremely sensitive to the smell of chemicals or materials while sleeping could find it easier to fall asleep and enjoy their sleep when using natural products.”

Natural materials are also better for the planet, which makes the brand appealing to eco-conscious shoppers. Birch uses breathable organic cotton that helps wick moisture away and keep the mattress cool. The wool is sourced from farms that practice sustainable shearing, and it helps regulate temperature while adding softness and support. Birch mattresses are also GOLS and GREENGUARD Gold certified, meaning they are tested for low chemical emissions. For people who want a mattress made from safer, more sustainable materials, Birch stands out as a thoughtful option.

Our testing also found that the Birch Natural latex hybrid mattress performs well in everyday use. Older adults in our tests noted its strong edge support, which makes it easier to sit or get in and out of bed. It also earned above-average pressure relief scores for back and side sleepers. And it has a responsive bounce that can help people with mobility issues move around more easily. Add in strong customer satisfaction, a 120-night sleep trial, free shipping, and a lifetime warranty, and it’s easy to see why there are so many positive Birch mattress reviews.

Understanding our scoring

Our mattress recommendations are based on our thorough research and testing. We created two scores to reflect the needs of our audience:

  • Accessibility score: A combined score reflecting factors that make it easier for older adults to move around and get in and out of bed.
  • Pain relief score: A combined score reflecting factors that help relieve pain while in bed.

The Birch Natural: Organic comfort and stability

Our experience with the Birch Natural

In our testing, the Birch Natural latex hybrid mattress stood out for its responsive support and stable edges. The Birch Natural is the company’s base model and the least expensive option in the lineup. But you might not guess that after lying on it because it’s made from such high-quality materials. It is a hybrid mattress that uses certified organic cotton and latex over a layer of steel coils. “Latex is a naturally durable and resilient material,” said Dr. Tesfu. “It will respond to the body's position and mold slightly to provide support but rapidly return to its original shape. This balance of support provides a neutral position that maintains spinal alignment and may lead to reduced pressure points and improved overall sleeping comfort.”

The combination of latex and springs gives the Birch Natural a nice bounce (a 5/5 score in our tests), which helps when changing positions or moving on it. The latex and coil design quickly springs back into shape, so you don’t feel stuck the way you sometimes do in memory foam. “It does come right back into shape,” said one of our older adult testers. “It doesn't mold around my hand when I push it in, but it kind of indents.”

Our testers were most impressed with Birch Natural’s stable edges. The mattress scored 4.67/5 for overall edge support. Our testers said that whether sitting or lying near the edge, they felt comfortable. “When I’m lying on the edge, I don’t feel like I’m going to roll off at all,” said Chris, a 66-year-old back sleeper with a higher weight and spinal stenosis. “I feel very stable lying on my back. It’s easy to move positions near the edge. It’s very comfortable.”

Testers were very impressed with the stable edges of the Birch Natural.

The Birch Natural is at the higher end of medium-firm (7/10), but our testers found it slightly firmer (8/10). “You stay up high on this mattress, and you’re not sinking down into it, so it’s easy to roll,” said Chris. “Going to the side is easy. And rolling over to my stomach is easy. You hardly need any effort to move around.” In our tests, the Birch Natural scored very high (4.51/5) for accessibility, making it one of the best mattresses for people who may need assistance getting in and out of bed or moving around. It also had top scores for back and side pressure (4/5 and 4.5/5, respectively).

Our testers found that the Birch had strong back and side support and made it easier to change positions than many other mattresses.

One of our only tests where the Birch Natural didn’t excel was motion isolation. It earned a below-average 2/5 score because its bounce was easily felt by people sharing a bed. “I can feel every single movement,” said one tester. “Nothing felt dampened. The bounce can be helpful for getting out of bed, but if you care about motion isolation, then this isn’t the best.” Because of this, the Birch Natural may work better for solo sleepers than couples, particularly if one partner is a light sleeper.

Who is Birch Natural right for?

The Birch Natural latex hybrid mattress is a good fit for people who want a responsive, supportive bed made with natural materials. Back and side sleepers may like its pressure-relieving feel and strong support. The high bounce and sturdy edges can help people who often change positions. It can also be a good choice for people who want to avoid fiberglass or synthetic materials in their mattress.

I may love it if I:
Sleep with a partnerNo
Have chronic painYes
Feel hot at nightYes
Have mobility concernsYes
Sleep in the following positionsSide, back

Who should keep looking for their perfect mattress?

Couples or light sleepers who wake easily may struggle with how bouncy this bed feels. People who prefer a soft, contouring mattress may also find it too firm. It scored only slightly above average for cooling, so if you sleep hot you may prefer a mattress with cooling tech.

Coming soon: Mattresses in our testing queue

In this Birch mattress review, we tested the Birch Natural latex hybrid mattress, which is the brand’s flagship model. But Birch makes a few other mattresses. We have not tested them yet, but they are in our testing queue, and we plan to review them soon. They are all made with the high-quality, natural, and certified materials Birch is known for.

The Birch Luxe Natural

This is a step up from the original Birch Natural. It has the same latex hybrid construction but adds a plush Euro top for more pressure relief and a softer, more cushioned feel. The firmness of the Luxe is 6/10, compared to 7/10 for the Birch Natural, so this may suit someone who prefers a slightly softer mattress made with organic and natural materials.

The Birch Elite Natural

This is the brand’s premium option. It is thicker (around 13 inches compared to the Natural's 11 inches) to include extra comfort and natural cooling layers. It also features zoned support that adds extra pressure relief under the lower back. This is the softest mattress from the brand, with a 5/10 firmness.

The Birch customer experience

The Birch brand received high marks (9.4/10) for customer service. It offers a standard 120-night trial period for its mattresses and a lifetime warranty. Basic shipping is free in the contiguous United States, but a $99 return fee applies. Birch will set up the mattress in a room in your home and remove the old mattress for an additional $199 fee.

Is a Birch mattress right for you?

Birch has been around since 2019 and has a solid reputation for quality products and good customer service, as does its parent company, Helix. The Birch Natural latex hybrid mattress performed well in our tests with older adults, and has a medium-firm feel that works well for many back, stomach, and combination sleepers. If you want to limit synthetic materials and chemical emissions, or simply prefer the sustainability or feel of natural materials, Birch could be a good fit.

When deciding if a Birch mattress would be good for you, some good questions to consider before buying include:

  • Do you prefer natural and organic materials over synthetic ones?
  • Are you concerned about chemical emissions from your mattress?
  • Are you comfortable spending more for a higher-quality mattress?
  • Do you prefer a responsive, slightly bouncy feel rather than a deep sink?
  • Do you want a mattress that sleeps cool and breathes well?
  • Are you looking for a mattress with a long warranty and sleep trial?
  • Do you have any mobility issues that a bouncy mattress could help with?
  • Do you sleep near the edge of the mattress and crave stability?

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy Birch mattresses?

Birch mattresses are sold online through the official Birch website and occasionally through partner retailers. Buying directly from the brand usually includes perks like a sleep trial, warranty coverage, and seasonal discounts.

Is a Birch mattress worth it?

For many people, yes, Birch mattresses are worth the price. The brand uses high-quality natural materials and durable coil systems, which can justify the higher price compared with many basic foam beds.

How long will a Birch mattress last?

With proper care and support, a Birch mattress can last around 8 to 10 years or more, due to its latex layers and sturdy coil construction.

Is Birch a good brand?

Birch is widely known for producing eco-friendly hybrid mattresses made from organic cotton, natural wool, and latex. It has built a strong reputation among shoppers looking for more natural sleep products.

Do Birch mattresses have fiberglass?

No. Birch mattresses use natural wool as a fire barrier and are made without fiberglass, which some other mattresses use as a flame-retardant layer.
