When people say they’re looking for the best mattresses, they’re often really looking for balance. They want something that’s not too firm, and not too soft. A medium-firm mattress is the Goldilocks of the sleep world, and that’s why you’ll see so many of them. Research has found that a medium-firm mattress can help with comfort, sleep quality, and healthy spinal alignment, which is why these mattresses work so well for so many sleepers.1
“There are those who prefer either a softer mattress or a firmer mattress—like many things, most people tend to find their preference is in the middle,” said Paul Fath, PT, DPT, OCS, an orthopedic clinical specialist and owner of Hub Physical Therapy in Bedford, Massachusetts. “A medium-firm mattress is one that provides the amount of firmness needed for the majority of support for our bodies, as well as the proper amount of softness to support the lighter areas.”
To find the best medium-firm mattress, we researched a long list of options and put them through our rigorous testing by our team of older adult testers. Read on to find out more.

Understanding accessibility and pain relief scores
Based on our testing, surveys, and focus groups with older adults, we created these two scores:
- Accessibility score: The higher the score, the easier it is to get in and out of the bed and change positions.
- Pain relief score: The higher the score, the more likely it can help relieve pain.

Why we chose the Nectar Classic Hybrid as the Best Medium-Firm Mattress
We chose the Nectar Classic Hybrid as the Best Medium-Firm Mattress Overall because it balances comfort and support better than most mattresses we tested. Medium-firm mattresses have been linked to better sleep quality because they support the spine and help keep it aligned, but are still comfortable and cushioning.1 The Nectar Classic Hybrid achieves this feel with a high coil count, dense foam layers, and edge-to-edge support. This is why we also chose it as our top pick for best hybrid mattress overall.
In addition to its performance, we liked that this mattress is under $1,000 for a queen size. The Nectar brand offers some great customer perks, including one of the longest trial periods. You can learn more in our full Nectar mattress review.
Our testing experience with the Nectar Classic Hybrid
Our older adult testers said this mattress felt like a true medium-firm mattress and was supportive without being stiff. “It takes a little bit more effort to push down through the mattress,” said one tester. “The foam is pretty responsive but takes an extra second to fully rise.” This may be due to the combination of springs and contouring foam working together to create a medium-firm feel.

Our testers felt most supported when lying on their back or side during testing. “I feel good overall," one tester said of back sleeping on the mattress. "I am pretty supported, and my spine feels aligned. My body is sinking into the mattress in just the right amount, and it feels really nice. I still feel supported but very comfortable.” For side sleeping, another tester noted, “I feel pretty good! I feel like my shoulder is being supported and there isn’t any pressure there.”
Stomach sleeping was more mixed but still comfortable for some testers. “I don’t have any major pressure points," said one tester. "I feel very even overall, and my spine feels aligned.” Overall, our testers felt the medium-firm design helped keep their bodies supported and aligned through the night.

They also felt the support evenly across the mattress, even when lying near the edge. “I feel pretty stable in this position lying down,” said one tester. “I don’t feel like I would roll unless I really lean far off the bed.” This shows the mattress is durable and offers full end-to-end support.

Why we chose the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid as the Best Medium-Firm Hybrid Mattress
We chose the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid as the Best Medium-Firm Hybrid Mattress because it balances responsive support with comfort. It also excelled in all our tests, earning one of the highest overall scores we’ve seen. This strong performance also comes at a lower price than most other mattresses we tested.
Our testers were impressed with the high-quality materials and even support, which kept them aligned and comfortable in every sleeping position. This is rare for any mattress. The mattress also has one of the longest trial periods we've seen, although you will need to pay extra for in-room delivery and setup. You can read more about those features in our DreamCloud mattress review.
Our testing experience with the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid
The DreamCloud Premier is a step up from the brand's classic model, and testers could tell the difference. They said the Premier had the look and feel of a higher-end mattress. “The pillow top is quilted and tufted, but the material feels amazing,” said Patti, 70, one of our testers. “I tried both the Classic Hybrid and now the Premier, and this one feels like nicer quality materials overall.”

The Premier also performed better than the Classic Hybrid in several categories, including edge support, where it earned a 4/5. “I feel pretty stable on the edge of this mattress,” said Patti. “When sitting down, I don’t feel like I am going to slide off or fall.” She also noted that the DreamCloud Premier is so responsive that she did not need to use her hands to help her stand up from a seated position on the side of the bed. As a result, Patti gave the mattress a 5/5 for bounce.

The medium-firm mattress felt soft on top but solid underneath. “When I push my hand into the surface, the memory foam bounces right back,” Patti said. “It is soft but feels like the quality would hold up over time, and that you wouldn’t experience areas that would dip or sag due to overuse.”
When our testers tried different sleep positions, they felt well-cushioned and well-supported in all of them. The mattress earned an impressive 4.5/5 for pressure relief for side and stomach sleeping, and a 4/5 for back sleeping. “This is very comfortable, and I feel support on my hip and my back,” said Patti while lying on her side.
She was even more impressed with the lower back support when lying face up. “My lumbar area feels great, and the mattress’s cover is filling in my lower back,” she said. For stomach sleeping, she noted, “I am feeling really good support in my trunk region, and I am not having any aches or pinching in my lower back.”
Who is the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid right for?
The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid is a good choice for people who want a true medium-firm feel with strong support. It works well for side, back, and stomach sleepers who want help with pressure relief and alignment. It’s also a smart pick for shoppers who want high quality at a lower price.

Helix Midnight: Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Side Sleepers
We chose the Helix Midnight as Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Side Sleepers because it excelled at relieving pressure under the hips, knees, and shoulders. These are key points for side sleepers. Its balanced feel is a good mix of supportive and plush. It also has strong edge support, allowing side sleepers to use more of the sleeping surface.

- Learn more in our Helix mattress review
- Medium-firm feel with high coil count and dense foam layers
- Strong edge-to-edge support (5/5)
- Cooling cover is great at regulating temperature
- Our pain relief score: 4.5/5
- Accessibility score: 4/5
- Mattress type: Hybrid
- Brand’s firmness rating: 6/10
Pros
- Excellent pressure relief for side sleepers
- Strong, stable edge support
- Balanced medium-firm feel that supports good sleep quality
Cons
- Not as responsive as some mattresses
- Takes more effort to change positions
Why we chose the Helix Midnight as the Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Side Sleepers
We chose the Helix Midnight as the Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Side Sleepers because it is a solid 6/10 on the firmness scale and earned a perfect 5/5 for side pressure relief in our testing. It was also a standout for edge support, with another perfect score. That stability can help those who get in and out of bed frequently and side sleepers who lie near the edge.
With its mix of reinforced steel coils and dense foam layers, the Helix Midnight both supports and cushions shoulders, hips, and other joints. This is particularly useful for people who sleep on their sides, providing more support in areas where pressure tends to build up.
Our testing experience with the Helix Midnight
Our testers thought the Helix Midnight was great for pressure relief, and noted that its zoned support helped maintain the natural curve of their spines. “Even on my side, my body feels evenly distributed,” said Sheila, a 70-year-old combination sleeper. “I carry more weight in my bottom half and typically have issues with pressure buildup there. Not on this mattress or in this position.” Layers of dense foam contour to the body and allow the shoulders and hips to sink in for pressure relief, providing softer support where needed to maintain alignment.

Testers commented that the Helix Midnight felt supportive yet plush. “I feel like I am sinking pretty heavily, but in a good way," Sheila said. "I love a more plush mattress so this amount of sinkage is ideal for me. It is still supportive but not too firm.” This balance is key for side sleepers who need pressure relief without losing support.
The Helix Midnight’s reinforced steel coils kept the edges stable in our testing, too. “The piping around the edge of the mattress keeps that edge in place, and it does not collapse like other mattresses,” Sheila said. “I feel like I am in the middle of the mattress when lying on the edge and still feel well supported.”

Testers did note that this mattress’s motion isolation, or ability to limit the effects of a partner's movement, was only average. This suggests it might not work well for couples. “I could feel both the changing of the positions and the partner getting in and out of bed,” said one tester. “The motion wasn't awful, but I definitely felt it all the way through the mattress to the other side of my body.”
But testers rated the Helix Midnight a solid 4/5 for cooling, and said its design allowed for good airflow. They also felt its Glaciotex cooling cover was effective. “It feels cool to the touch even after I was lying on it for a minute,” said one tester.
Who is the Helix Midnight right for?
The Helix Midnight is best for side sleepers who want a medium-firm mattress with strong pressure relief for that position. It’s also a good pick for people who like a plush feel but still need support. It may not be the best for couples, especially if one is a light sleeper.

Leesa Original: Best Medium-Firm Memory Foam Mattress
We chose the Leesa Original as the Best Medium-Firm Memory Foam Mattress because it offers the comfort and contouring people love about foam mattresses, with solid support and great cooling (which is uncommon for a foam mattress). At $999 for a queen, it also delivers strong performance without a super high cost.

- Three-layer all-foam design
- Cooling performance rated 4/5
- Strong pressure relief for back and side sleepers
- Our pain relief score: 4/5
- Accessibility score: 3.5/5
- Mattress type: Memory foam
- Brand’s firmness rating: 5-7/10
Pros
- Excellent pressure relief for back and side sleepers
- Great cooling for foam
- Affordable price
Cons
- Limited bounce
- Harder to change positions
- Motion transfer may bother couples
Why we chose the Leesa Original as the Best Medium-Firm Memory Foam Mattress
We chose the Leesa Original as the Best Medium-Firm Memory Foam Mattress because it offers everything foam mattress fans love, along with even support and some features you don’t typically find with foam. It has strong edge support, which our testers rated at 4/5. And it also excels at temperature control, earning another 4/5 for cooling. We loved the plush feel and contouring support, and felt the Leesa Original offers a great value for a mattress under $1,000.
Our testing experience with the Leesa Original
During testing, the Leesa Original stood out for its even support. The firmness surprised some testers, who thought the mattress felt firmer than expected. While this helped with support, testers noted that “the memory foam is not super responsive” and does not have much bounce. Switching positions and getting out of bed took more effort than it would on a hybrid mattress.

Despite this, the Leesa didn’t give our testers the feeling of being “trapped” in the mattress that some do. “This mattress does a good job of not having the ‘stuck’ feeling like you normally see with memory foam beds,” Sheila said. “I don’t feel like I am sinking too much. There is a good balance of sinkage and support for my body weight.” This made it easier to relax without feeling stuck in one position.
Our testers gave the Leesa perfect scores for pressure relief on both the back and the side. “I feel like the pressure is even and the mattress is hugging my body,” said Sheila. “My spine is well aligned, and I feel very comfortable overall. I don’t have any pressure points anywhere.”

Testers were also impressed by the mattress's look and feel. “The mattress has a very soft, jersey-like feel with the knit cover,” Sheila said. “It’s really comfortable alone, I almost wouldn’t want sheets on it.” Cooling and edge support also earned above-average scores, though testers noted that motion transfer could be an issue for couples.
Who is the Leesa Original right for?
The Leesa Original is a great choice for shoppers who want a medium-firm memory foam mattress under $1,000. It works best for back and side sleepers looking for even pressure relief and steady support. It may not work well for couples who are sensitive to movement.

Cons

Why we chose the WinkBed Luxury Firm as the Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Arthritis
We chose the WinkBed Luxury Firm as the Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Arthritis because it combines firm support with gentle cushioning for joints. Research has found that a medium-firm mattress tends to result in the best sleep quality, especially for people with joint pain. This mattress earned high scores for pain and pressure relief while also supporting proper spinal alignment. It's also responsive enough to make movement easier for stiff joints. You can learn more about its design and performance in our WinkBed mattress review.
Our testing experience with the WinkBed Luxury Firm
During testing, our team noticed how well the WinkBed Luxury Firm balanced support and comfort. Testers felt stable on the mattress without feeling stuck, which is important for people with arthritis who may need to change positions often. One tester joked that the balance of comfort and support made her feel like she could “just lie there forever.”

Side sleeping felt especially comfortable. “I like this for side sleeping," one tester said. "I don’t feel any pressure building at the shoulders and hips, but I still feel support.” This kind of pressure relief is helpful for tender joints, especially in the shoulders and hips, while the supportive core helps maintain a healthy spine alignment. The WinkBed earned a 4/5 for pressure relief in the side-sleeping position.
The mattress also made it easier to move around. Testers liked the bounce and responsiveness, which can reduce strain on stiff joints when rolling over or getting out of bed. They didn’t feel trapped by the pillow top and found position changes smooth and manageable.

There were some limits, though. One tester noted a lack of edge support. “I feel like I can slide easily if I sit close to the edge," the tester said. "There’s too much sinkage to use my hands to get up and down.” Cooling performance was solid overall, earning a 4/5 for preventing heat buildup during sleep.
Who is the WinkBed Luxury Firm right for?
The WinkBed Luxury Firm is a strong choice for people with arthritis who want a medium-firm mattress that eases joint pressure. It works well for side and back sleepers who need both cushioning and support. It may not be the right match for those who sleep with a partner or rely heavily on the edge for support when standing up.

Saatva Classic: Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Back Pain
We chose the Saatva Classic as the Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Back Pain because it relieves pressure and keeps the spine well-supported, earning top scores in our tests. The mattress feels balanced, not too soft and not too firm, which helps reduce back strain. Its strong edges also make it easier to get in and out of bed.

- Learn more in our Saatva mattress review
- Medium-firm feel with dual layers of coils
- Excellent pressure relief in all sleeping positions
- Strong, stable edges for easier movement
- Our pain relief score: 4.87/5
- Accessibility score: 4.55/5
- Mattress type: Hybrid
- Brand’s firmness rating: 6/10
Pros
- Keeps the spine aligned and supported
- Relieves pressure across the whole body
- Easier to get in and out of
Cons
- Motion transfer is noticeable
- Not a great fit for couples sensitive to movement
- Higher price than basic mattresses
Why we chose the Saatva Classic as the Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Back Pain
We chose the Saatva Classic as the Best Medium-Firm Mattress for Back Pain because it has high-quality materials and a design that provides gentle cushioning and steady support, especially for the back. The Saatva earned scores among the highest for back pressure relief (4.5/5), strong edges, and good bounce, which aids movement. Its medium-firm feel and hybrid design help keep the spine in a neutral, aligned position, which may help with back pain.
We also love that Saatva offers free white-glove delivery on all its products and has one of the longest trial periods of any mattress we tested. You can read more in our Saatva brand review.
Our testing experience with the Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic is offered in three firmness levels, and we tested the medium-firm option (Luxury Firm). Its responsive coils and foam layers work together to add support where it’s needed most, especially under the lower back. One tester lay on her back and said, “I love this! I’ll see you in an hour after this nap!” When she changed positions and returned to her back, she added, “I can’t believe how comfortable it is. My spine feels straight, and my back feels relaxed.”

The Saatva was even supportive for stomach sleeping, which can cause back pain without proper support because of how that position arches the spine. But a tester who tried lying on her stomach (a position she doesn’t usually prefer) said, “I feel like I have a neutral spine. Throw a blanket over me—I could sleep just like this.” The Saatva’s medium-firm feel helped keep testers' hips from sinking in too deeply, preventing the spine from becoming misaligned.
The Saatva Classic earned one of the highest pressure relief scores we recorded (4.7/5). When tested with a pressure mat, it showed low pressure in every sleeping position, a feature few mattresses can match.

Testers also found the mattress stable near the edges and gave it a 4.3/5 for edge support. Patty, a 61-year-old side sleeper, said, “I feel a hard piping to the edge of the mattress. This has good support.” She added, “This one feels like it helps my body when standing out of the bed.” Motion transfer was the main downside. “I can feel all the movement," one tester noted. "It’s a little jarring… I definitely think this motion would wake me up.”
Who is the Saatva Classic right for?
The Saatva Classic could be a great fit for people with back pain who sleep on their back, side, or stomach. It’s also helpful for anyone who needs strong edge support to get in and out of bed more easily. It may not work well for light sleepers who share a bed.

Our testing experience with the Silk & Snow Hybrid
Right away, testers noticed that the Silk & Snow Hybrid looked more expensive than expected. The quilted antimicrobial topper felt soft and smooth, and the stitching along the seams felt strong and durable. Overall, the mattress had a clean, well-made look.

When we examined the inside, testers were impressed with the design. The individually wrapped coils are surrounded by dense foam, which helps support the edges. “You couldn’t see the springs inside when we cut the mattress open,” one tester said. This foam border made the mattress feel stable when sitting or lying near the edge.

Once on the mattress, testers felt supported without sinking too much. “I feel pretty supported lying down on this mattress," said one tester. "I feel really good in the back sleeping position. It is soft enough that it goes up to the curve of my spine, but I don’t feel like I am sunk down inside the mattress.” The mattress earned an overall pressure relief score of 4.17 during testing.
The Silk & Snow also earned high marks for how it felt to move on and how cool it stayed. “I feel like switching positions is pretty easy overall,” one tester noted. In cooling, it earned a 4/5. “I didn’t really notice it warming up much while I was lying on it,” the tester said. “It all feels about the same, nice and cool.”

- Accessibility score: 3.65/5
- Mattress type: Hybrid
- Brand’s firmness rating: 5/10
Pros

- Strong, supportive medium-firm feel
- Easier to move around on
Cons
- Firmer than the brand’s 5/10 rating suggests
- Edge support is weaker when sitting
- May feel too firm for strict side sleepers
Why we chose the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe as the Best Cooling Medium-Firm Mattress
We chose the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe as Best Cooling Medium-Firm Mattress because it strikes a smart balance between cooling power and supportive comfort. Brooklyn Bedding rates this mattress as a 5/10 for firmness, but our testers felt it closer to an 8/10, which places it well within the medium-firm range. In our cooling tests, the Aurora Luxe rose by fewer degrees than most other mattresses we tested and quickly returned to its resting temperature. Testers also noticed that it felt cool to the touch. In our Brooklyn Bedding brand review, the Aurora Luxe stood out for its advanced cooling materials and reliable hybrid design.
Our testing experience with the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe
In our cooling tests, the Aurora Luxe earned a 4/5 score, with surface temperatures rising less than 10 degrees during heat gun testing. Testers noticed the cool feel right away. “The top feels really cool—probably the coolest one I’ve touched so far,” said one tester. “The top actually feels several degrees colder than everything around it, as if it’s been purposely cooled by 5 degrees. When I lie down on the mattress, I don’t feel heat building up at all, and every part of my body that’s touching the mattress feels a few degrees cooler than everything else.”

That cooling feel comes from the brand's copper-infused foam and phase-change materials near the surface. During longer testing sessions, the bed stayed cool for hours, making it a favorite among testers who usually sleep hot. The surface never felt warm, even under direct body heat.
Testers also noticed that the mattress felt firm and responsive. The bouncy coil system made it easier to change positions, and the dense foams didn’t make sleepers feel trapped. One tester said the mattress “comes back up pretty quickly,” which helped when rolling from back to side. This firmer feel gave good support to the lower back and hips, especially for back and combination sleepers.

There were a few downsides. Edge support felt weaker when sitting on the side of the bed, which could be an issue for people who rely on the edge to get in and out of bed. Still, the strong cooling performance and supportive feel made the Aurora Luxe a standout.
Who is the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe right for?
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is best for hot sleepers who want a cool-to-the-touch mattress with a medium-firm feel. It could be a good fit for back and combination sleepers who want support without sinking too deeply.

Our process testing the best medium-firm mattresses
To find the best medium-firm mattresses, we put dozens of top-rated models through a variety of tests. We had older adults try each mattress and rate it in different categories, as well as provide both positive and negative feedback. We also tested factors such as cooling with a heat gun and pressure relief using a pressure-sensing mat.
Firmness
We tested how supportive each mattress is by having our testers lie in multiple positions on each mattress. We collected testers’ feedback on how supported they felt while sitting and lying on the mattresses. We also tested how difficult it was for testers to switch sleeping positions. Check out our best firm mattress guide for more insight.
Pain relief
We created a unique formula to decide how likely a mattress is to relieve pain, factoring in pressure relief, firmness, edge support, and bounce. The higher the score, the more likely the mattress is to relieve pain.
Pressure relief
To test pressure relief, we placed a pressure mat on each mattress and had our testers lie on it on their sides, backs, and stomachs. We recorded the average pressure rating for each sleep position and used the color-coded images generated by this tool to identify areas of the body with high or low pressure. We also used our testers’ feedback about any areas where they felt little or excessive pressure.
Spinal support
We tested spinal support by having our testers lie on each mattress on their sides, backs, and stomachs. We asked them for feedback on how well aligned they felt. We also looked for indications of poor alignment, such as when their hips sank lower than their shoulders. Medium-firm mattresses with zoned support systems can help support the spine’s natural curve by offering varying firmness levels in different areas.
Edge support
A mattress with good edge support is more durable, meaning it will keep its medium-firm feel for longer. We tested this by measuring how far the mattress's edge compressed when a weight was placed on it. We also asked our testers how stable each mattress felt when they were lying or sitting near the edge.
Who should consider a medium-firm mattress?
A medium-firm mattress can be a good option for most people because it offers a nice mix of support and comfort with a feel that isn’t too hard or too soft. But a medium-firm mattress may be especially beneficial for some people, including:
- Back sleepers: If you sleep on your back, this level of firmness provides spinal support while remaining comfortable.
- Combination sleepers: If you tend to switch positions a lot through the night, a mattress that isn’t too hard or too soft can be best. You want a mattress that is firm enough to support you in all positions and not so soft that you’ll feel stuck in it, but also more comfortable than lying on a stiff board.
- People with back pain: A medium-firm mattress can help support the lower back while easing pressure on the shoulders and hips. That can help keep the spine in alignment and prevent low back pain.
- People who aren’t sure what kind of mattress they like: A medium-firm mattress is also a smart choice when you’re unsure of what your mattress preferences are. Medium-firm is the most common and versatile option, so it’s often a safe place to start.
If you want a versatile mattress that works for different sleep styles and feels balanced—not too soft and not too hard—a medium-firm mattress is worth considering. It can adapt to many needs.
How to choose the right medium-firm mattress for your sleep style
The main position you sleep in plays a big role in how a medium-firm mattress feels. “An individual’s preferred sleeping position is important to getting a comfortable and restful night’s sleep,” said Fath, the Massachusetts-based physical therapist.
A medium-firm mattress can support most positions pretty well. Back sleepers often get great spinal alignment on this firmness, and stomach sleepers benefit from the added support that helps keep their hips from sinking too far and arching their spines. Side sleepers may want a medium-firm mattress with extra cushioning to relieve pressure at the shoulders and hips.
Keep in mind that firmness is very personal, and comfort can vary from person to person. Body weight may affect how firm a mattress feels. People who are lighter weight may find a medium-firm mattress a bit too firm, while those with a higher weight may find it less firm and need stronger support layers to avoid sinking too much.
When trying a mattress, lie on it in different positions and notice how it feels to move or change positions. This is especially important for older adults and combination sleepers. A good medium-firm mattress should feel responsive and keep your body aligned as you shift. For adults with joint pain, arthritis, or mobility issues, medium-firm options can also make it easier to get in and out of bed.
But when it comes to sleep, there is no one-size-fits-all. “Medium-firm mattresses are a great fit for most people, but are not going to be for everyone,” said Fath. “Choosing the mattress firmness that is right for you remains a very subjective decision, and you will do best with the mattress that you feel most supported by.”
What to look for when choosing a medium-firm mattress
A medium-firm mattress is often seen as a good moderate option: not too soft, not too hard. This balance can help support most sleepers while still feeling comfortable and not stiff.
“A medium-firm mattress is likely most beneficial for comfort, sleep quality, and spinal alignment due to its abilities to support most people’s bodies where they need it most,” said Fath. Here are some other qualities to look for when shopping for a medium-firm mattress:
High-quality materials and construction
“In addition to the brand firmness reading, some of the things that I look for in a mattress are the materials used to make the mattress and how long I can expect a mattress to last,” said Fath. “Some materials used last longer than others. If I am making an investment in a mattress, I want to have the peace of mind of knowing that it will last for a long time and is of high-quality.” Dense foams, strong coils, and durable covers can help a medium-firm mattress perform well for years.
Zoned support systems
Some medium-firm mattresses use zoned support to provide firmer support under the lower back and softer support under lighter-weight parts of the body. This helps keep the spine aligned while still offering comfort. “Larger pressure points of the body require more firmness to feel comfortable and supported, while smaller pressure points of the body require softness to achieve a similar level of comfort and support,” said Fath.
Hybrid construction (foam + coils)
Hybrid mattresses combine foam layers with an inner coil system. This design offers the contouring feel of foam along with the support and lift of coils, which many people prefer in a medium-firm mattress. “Many people who tend to prefer a more traditional mattress are gravitating towards hybrid models," said Faith. "They enjoy the firmer feel of the more traditional mattress beneath the additional memory foam or latex layer on top to support the smaller areas of the body."
Cooling technologies
Cooling features like gel-infused foam, breathable coils, and phase-change covers help move heat away from the body. These technologies can be especially helpful for people who sleep hot or wake up feeling overheated. A cooler sleep surface can improve comfort and help you stay asleep longer through the night.
Edge support and motion isolation
Good edge support helps the mattress feel stable when sitting or sleeping near the edge. Motion isolation reduces the amount of movement you feel when a partner shifts or gets out of bed. These features are especially useful for couples and for anyone who wants a bed that feels sturdy and secure.
Trial periods and warranties
“Many of the newer mattress companies are offering 90 nights of use or more to buyers so they feel comfortable with their purchase decision,” said Fath. At-home trial periods allow you to test a mattress in real-life conditions. It can also give you a sense of how the mattress will feel after the initial break-in period.
