Sleep has a big impact on your health, so it’s definitely worth investing in the best mattress you can afford. But sometimes you can boost your bed’s support and feel with a mattress topper. “Investing in a topper is easier and less expensive than getting a whole new mattress,” said Joseph Dzierzewski, PhD, senior vice president of research and scientific affairs for the National Sleep Foundation. Mattress toppers can help make a bed feel softer, firmer, or cooler, and they may ease pressure on your back, hips, or shoulders. “Toppers can certainly add a comfort level,” said Dzierzewski.
To find the best options, we tested mattress toppers for comfort, support, ease of movement, and quality. We also compared their performance across different sleep needs and budgets. Here are the best mattress toppers to upgrade your bed right now.

What we look for in a mattress topper
We looked for the following features when choosing the best mattress toppers:
Saatva Graphite Memory Foam: Best Mattress Topper Overall
We selected the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Topper as the Best Mattress Topper Overall because it balances comfort, support, and quality better than any other mattress topper we tested. It feels plush and responsive, offers standout perks such as a long trial period, and works well for a wide range of sleep styles.

Cons
- Fit may not be perfectly edge-to-edge
- Cover is not removable
Why we chose the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam as the Best Mattress Topper Overall
We chose the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Topper as the Best Mattress Topper Overall because it earned high marks across our testing categories and offers strong value, with one of the longest trial periods of any topper we tested. We liked how the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam mattress topper balances pressure relief with ease of movement. Many memory foam mattress toppers can feel slow to respond to movement, making you feel trapped in slow-moving foam. But this one helps you change positions without sacrificing softness or contouring.
We also loved the high-quality construction of this topper, something Saatva is well known for (you can read more about that in our Saatva brand review). The plush, organic cotton-blend cover is thick, soft, and well-made, giving this topper a true luxury feel. It isn’t slippery, which can be a concern for older adults or anyone with a mobility issue who is at increased risk of falls. And the graphite-infused foam helps wick heat away during the night. In our tests, this topper had a temperature increase (10.7 degrees) slightly below the average (12.5 degrees).
Saatva also has an extra-long 180-night trial, one of the longest in the industry. This allows you to try this mattress topper and ensure it meets your needs.
Our testing experience with the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam
Our testers rated this topper high-quality, giving it 4/5 for materials: secure stitching that won't pull out from use and a soft cotton-blend cover that resists pilling. They did note that the cover is not removable, which could make washing it more difficult.

This memory foam topper is infused with graphite. Graphite is a natural form of carbon that dissipates heat, originally used to manage heat in electronic components.1 Saatva uses this same technology to manage heat in this mattress topper. The foam is also certified toxin-free. Our testers found it bouncier than other memory foam toppers they tried, making it easier to move around. “The foam is pretty plush, but has a strong responsiveness,” said one lower-weight tester. “It’s very easy to switch positions. There is a bouncy feel to it that pops you up as you move from your side to your back. I feel like I am being hugged, not like I am sinking in.” Our testers rated it 4.5/5 for changing positions.

Testers noted that the topper’s fit could be improved. “It needs to be an inch wider,” said one. “There is a slight gap if you try to line the edges up together, so I think this would bother me if I were sharing the bed and slept closer to the edge.” But the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam topper does have elastic bands at each corner to help it stay in place. “It does not shift as I am moving around,” a tester said. “The fabric is not slippery like some other toppers, which helps your body not slide. When I lie down near the edge, I actually feel pretty secure.”
With its all-around performance, quality, and long trial period, we consider the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam mattress topper a good value for most people seeking a supportive memory foam topper.

Helix Premium Mattress Topper with GlacioTex: Best Soft Mattress Topper
We chose the Helix Premium Mattress Topper with GlacioTex as the Best Soft Mattress Topper because it delivers a truly plush and cozy feel. At 3.75 inches, it's the thickest topper on our list and adds instant comfort to a mattress. If you love soft mattress toppers that feel fancy, this one stands out.

- Learn more about the brand in our Helix review
- The thickest topper on our list (3.75 inches)
- Cooling GlacioTex cover
- Hybrid design with foam and micro coils
- Material type: Memory foam and steel microcoils
- Thickness: 3.75"
- Cooling: Cooling cover
- Pressure relief or ergonomic design: Coils for pressure relief
Pros
- Very soft and plush sleep surface
- Excellent pressure relief for side sleepers
- Feels cooling and luxurious
- Choice of two firmness levels
Cons
- Heavy and hard to move
- Not a good option for already-soft mattresses
- Weak edge support
- Higher cost and somewhat short warranty (1 year)
Why we chose the Helix Premium Mattress Topper with GlacioTex as the Best Soft Mattress Topper
We selected the Helix Premium Mattress Topper with GlacioTex as the Best Soft Mattress Topper because it provides a soft, cloud-like sleep surface without sacrificing support. This is the thickest topper on our list, measuring 3.75 inches, and has a unique hybrid construction featuring innerspring microcoils and dense foam layers. The Helix Premium is available in two firmness levels: Luxury Plush and Luxury Firm. We tested the softer Luxury Plush.
The combination of individually wrapped coils and foam makes the Helix Premium topper feel more like a mattress. The structure leaves it feeling extra durable. We were impressed with how its hybrid design increased airflow and added support where needed.
The plush Helix topper option can enhance comfort on a firmer mattress. You may lose some edge support and ease of movement, but if you prefer a soft mattress, this topper can be a great fit. It also has a long trial period (100 nights).
Our testing experience with the Helix Premium Mattress Topper with GlacioTex
The Luxury Plush is the softer of the two options Helix offers for its Premium Mattress Toppers. Our testers immediately noticed how thick it was compared to other toppers we tried. “This is one of the thicker mattress toppers I have tested,” said one. “It feels soft, cooling, and luxurious.” Our testers were impressed enough to score the Helix Premium Topper a 4.5/5 for materials.

Testers said the hybrid design of this topper was comfortable but supportive. But it also weighed more than the others. “This topper is very heavy, so moving it alone is a little difficult,” said one tester. It includes straps that securely fasten the topper to the mattress, reducing the risk of shifting overnight.
Testers agreed that while this plush topper “felt amazing,” it requires a firmer mattress. On a softer mattress, one tester said, “My body was completely stuck in the mattress and did not have good spinal alignment. It was like my body was wrapped in a topper rather than my body lying on top of a topper.” But using the Helix Premium topper on a firm mattress was a great combination, earning a 4.5/5 for pressure relief. “I felt great pressure relief in my lower back, and the topper gently hugged my body, giving a cloud-like sensation,” said one tester. “In every position, my body felt supported, comfortable, and the pressure relief was a 10/10.”
As with many softer mattress toppers, this one was less bouncy. “There is a lot of sinkage,” noted a tester. “Changing positions was easy to do for the most part, but with the deep design and plush firmness, you do feel a little stuck in the mattress. When I changed positions, the responsiveness took a little longer than other toppers.” If you have m›obility issues or prefer a less enveloping feel, the Luxury Firm model may be a better choice.

This topper’s other weak point was edge support, where it scored 3/5. Between its height and the fabric's slick feel, our tester found it difficult to feel stable near the mattress edge. “My bottom collapsed through the edge immediately and felt like it would slide off the more I exaggerated my position for sitting on the edge,” one tester said. People who are shorter than 5’5” may have trouble with such a tall topper as well. But if you prefer a soft topper that still supports you in any position, the Helix Premium is worth considering. Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex 201: Best Memory Foam Mattress Topper
We chose the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex 201 as the Best Memory Foam Mattress Topper because it delivers deep pressure relief with a cozy, contouring feel. This topper is made for sleepers who love that classic memory foam hug. Among the foam mattress toppers we tested, this one stood out for its mix of comfort and quality at a great price.
- Learn more about the brand in our Brooklyn Bedding review
- Copper-infused memory foam for pressure relief and temperature control
- Breathable, moisture-wicking airflow design
- Corner straps to keep the topper securely in place
- Material type: Copper-infused memory foam
- Thickness: 2 inches
- Cooling: Copper-infused foam and breathable material
- Pressure relief or ergonomic design: Pressure-relieving foam
Pros
- Excellent pressure relief and body contouring
- High-quality materials with copper infusion
- Stays securely in place on the mattress
Cons
- Cover is not removable
- Only average cooling for hot sleepers
- Slow response makes movement harder than on firmer toppers
Why we chose the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex 201 as the Best Memory Foam Mattress Topper
We chose the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex 201 as the Best Memory Foam Mattress Topper because it uses dense, high-quality foam and excels at pressure relief, earning a nearly perfect 4.5/5 score. We liked that the quilted top was soft and stayed in place due to the straps at each corner. The dense foam is infused with copper filaments, designed to wick away heat.
Although the CopperFlex 201 was only about average at cooling in our tests—not unusual for memory foam—hot sleepers can upgrade to the CopperFlex 301, which has additional cooling technology (we did not test that product). Copper is naturally antimicrobial, meaning the topper resists bacteria and mold.2
Brooklyn Bedding makes all its products in the United States, which you can read more about in our Brooklyn Bedding review. The company offers a 3-year warranty and a 30-night trial for all its toppers. We particularly like the CopperFlex 201 for sleepers who prefer the contouring and motion absorption of memory foam, and don’t need a bouncy mattress.
Our testing experience with the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex 201
Our testers noted that the CopperFlex 201 topper was thoughtfully designed and appeared durable. “The cover has a pretty navy and copper dotted pattern,” said one. “It’s not silky and sleek, but soft, more like T-shirt material.” Pressing on it showed that this topper leans plush and slow-moving, which is what memory foam fans usually love. Testers gave it a perfect 5/5 score for materials.
Fit was another highlight during testing. “The topper comes with straps at each corner to properly secure it,” said one tester. “I thought the straps worked great. I was able to roll around and switch sleeping positions, and it didn’t budge an inch.” Even with lots of movement, the topper stayed firmly in place, earning it a 5/5 for fit.
In terms of movement and responsiveness, the CopperFlex 201 stayed true to classic memory foam. “The topper has a slow response to pressure, so it’s not very bouncy and doesn’t provide a ton of assistance from one position to the next,” noted one tester. You don’t feel stuck, but you do have to push a bit to change positions, which is expected for a topper focused on contouring and pressure relief. It scored slightly above average for position changes, at 3.5/5.
Pressure relief was particularly good for the lower back. “The foam did a really great job contouring my lumbar region and providing cushioning across my entire body,” said one tester. It also worked well for side sleepers on both firm and soft mattresses.

Nolah Mattress Topper: Best Mattress Topper for Back Pain
The Nolah Mattress Topper is our pick for the Best Mattress Topper for Back Pain because, in our testing, it tied for the highest pressure relief, which may help ease back pain. Its breathable foam design gently cradles the body without restricting movement, which may benefit people whose pain makes it difficult to change positions at night.

- Good for both soft and firm mattresses
- Excellent pressure relief may help ease pain
- 10-year warranty, one of the longest
- Material type: Memory foam and cotton
- Thickness: 2”
- Cooling: Breathable foam
- Pressure relief or ergonomic design: High-density foam for pressure relief
Pros
- Outstanding pressure relief
- Equally supportive on soft or firm mattresses
- Has a 10-year warranty
Cons
- One of the more expensive toppers we tested
- Cover is not removable
Why we chose Nolah as the Best Mattress Topper for Back Pain
We chose the Nolah Topper as the Best Mattress Topper for Back Pain because its superior pressure relief may help reduce nighttime aches and stiffness. The Nolah offers this topper in two firmness levels, and we tested the firmer option (Luxury Firm). During our testing, it tied for the highest pressure relief score overall. That kind of support helps keep the spine aligned while taking pressure off the shoulders, hips, and lower back. It’s one reason the Nolah was our top pick overall in our best mattress topper for back pain roundup.
This topper also earned high marks for accessibility (4/5). A topper that improves movement and stability, especially at the edges, can be important if you have back pain. This topper remained fairly cool, which may help soothe sore muscles and joints. We also like that it has a 10-year warranty, one of the longest of any topper we tested.
Our testing experience with the Nolah Mattress Topper
During testing, the Nolah Mattress Topper stood out for its soft, high-quality feel and balanced support. At just two inches thick, it still provides great support thanks to a core of AirFoam, a breathable, pressure-relieving foam. Our testers were pleasantly surprised by how cushioned the organic cotton cover felt. “This mattress topper has a quilted cover that is soft and feels like a nice little added extra layer of comfort,” said one.

Testers also found the Nolah easier to move around on, even without the bounce you’d get from latex, scoring it 3.5/5 for changing positions.. “This air foam design did a good job of cradling me but not impeding my movements when switching positions,” one tester said. That can be important when dealing with chronic pain.
Similarly, testers had no issues with stability near the edge of the bed on this topper, scoring edge support a 3.5/5. “It still felt supportive, and the cover did not cause me to feel like I was sliding,” said one. “The topper fits really well on the mattress, so I didn't have issues with the topper moving either.” Testers did note that the straps holding this topper in place are better suited for 10- to 12-inch mattresses, and may be stretched too much on anything higher.
Our testers appreciated how well the Nolah performed across different mattress firmness levels. “This topper feels amazing on both the soft and firm mattress,” one tester said, adding that it delivered “amazing pressure relief,” which can help maintain spinal alignment and ease pain.

The breathable foam also helped prevent heat buildup. Our temperature tests found that the Nolah topper rose only 11.2 degrees after use, making it the fourth-coolest option we tested. A cool, comfortable sleep surface can help you sleep through the night uninterrupted, which matters when pain makes it harder to get a decent night’s sleep.

Birch Plush Organic: Best Organic Mattress Topper
We selected the Birch Plush Organic as the Best Organic Mattress Topper because it delivers comfortable, responsive support and is made of natural materials. Made with certified organic cotton and latex, it has a high-quality feel that stands out from synthetic toppers. It also earned a very high accessibility score, making it easier to move around on than many toppers.

- Organic latex and cotton provide a high-quality feel and stay cooler naturally
- Great at limiting heat buildup
- Easier to move around on
- Material type: Organic cotton and latex
- Thickness: 2”
- Cooling: Breathable cotton
- Pressure relief or ergonomic design: Responsive latex
Pros
- Longest warranty at 10 years
- 100-night trial period
- Made with certified organic materials
Cons
- Most expensive mattress topper we tested at $532
- Cover is not removable
- No straps, which can cause shifting
- Not suitable for anyone with a latex allergy
Why we chose the Birch Plush Organic as the Best Organic Mattress Topper
We selected the Birch Plush Organic as the Best Organic Mattress Topper because it combines firm support, ease of movement, and natural materials. Its latex core is highly responsive. It earned a perfect 5/5 for bounce. It ranked third overall for accessibility among the toppers we tested, with a 4.3/5 score. Those qualities help when changing positions and provide support when moving or getting out of bed. Our testing found that this topper remained equally supportive on both softer and firmer mattresses, helping with spinal alignment and cushioning joints.
The Birch Plush Organic topper is made with certified organic materials, including naturally breathable latex. That may be part of the reason this topper costs more than average. But that cost includes a 10-year warranty, the longest of any mattress we tried, and a 100-night sleep trial so you can be certain about your purchase.
Our testing experience with the Birch Plush Organic
Despite its two-inch height, the Birch Plush Organic lived up to its name during testing. According to our testers, it was like a thick blanket. “It feels like a high-quality, cozy, natural topper,” one tester said. The organic cotton cover is soft and comfortable, but note that it can't be removed or machine-washed. It’s made of quality materials, but the lack of simple washing features earned the Birch Plus topper a materials score of 4/5.

The latex layer is supportive, and our testers felt it responded well to movement, relieving pressure wherever needed as they changed positions. “This topper is thinner and has a denser feel to the foam, so you don’t sink into it too much,” one tester said. That made it easier to move around, earning it a 4 out of 5 for ease of position changes.
In our tests, the topper performed consistently on different sleep surfaces. “If you have a mattress that is too soft, this could help add more pressure relief and support," said one of our testers. "If your mattress is too firm, this would just add a little more coziness and plushness… The organic materials feel very cozy.” The latex is also naturally breathable, which helps the topper regulate temperature. In our tests, it rose only 11 degrees after use, below the average mattress topper (12.5 degrees).

Fit was the main drawback of the Birch Plus Organic topper during testing. “The topper fits well on the bed in terms of size,” said one tester. “But it is lacking straps to keep it in place, and as I lay on it, the topper did shift.” Testers found the topper would bunch up in some places, earning it a fit score of 3/5. This didn’t affect firmness, comfort, or support, but it may impact overall stability, which could be an issue for people with mobility concerns.

ViscoSoft Select High Density: Best Budget Mattress Topper
We chose the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper as the Best Budget Mattress Topper because it delivers impressive comfort, support, and cooling at the lowest price on our list. It has a plush feel and includes a 90-day trial period and a 5-year warranty, making it a strong value even at its lower price.

- The most affordable mattress topper on our list
- High-density memory foam with an ultra-plush feel
- Removable cover and adjustable straps for a secure fit
- Creates a supportive, medium-firm feel
- Material type: High-density gel-infused memory foam
- Thickness: 2"– 4”
- Cooling: Gel-infused memory foam
- Pressure relief or ergonomic design: Pressure-relieving memory foam
Pros
- One of the best mattress toppers for budget shoppers
- Excellent pressure relief on firm mattresses
- Adjustable straps
- Soft and cushy without making you feel stuck
Cons
- Edge support is only average
- May feel too soft on already soft beds
- Adds noticeable height to the mattress
Why we chose the ViscoSoft Select High-Density as the Best Budget Mattress Topper
We chose the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper as the Best Budget Mattress Topper because at $235 for a queen size, it is the least expensive option we tested. Of the brands we tested, only the ViscoSoft Reflex Gel topper costs less, but that topper didn’t stay as cool or respond as quickly as the Select. At this price, the Select High Density offers far greater value.
You won't sacrifice support or comfort while paying less for this mattress topper. Our testers described this topper as plush and cloud-like. The ViscoSoft Select earned one of our highest overall scores (9.4/10) and performed above average across all categories we tested. It was especially effective when used on a firm mattress. Our testers rated it a perfect 5/5 for support.
We also like that ViscoSoft offers a 90-day trial period and a 5-year warranty on all its toppers, another added value.
Our testing experience with the ViscoSoft Select High-Density Topper
The ViscoSoft Select was one of the more plush toppers we tried. “The cover feels like a soft knit fabric, and I love the speckled navy print,” said one tester. The topper is made with 3 inches of gel-infused high-density memory foam. “The plush foam design conforms to your body nicely,” one tester said. “When changing positions, I can feel the foam slowly regaining form, but it doesn’t make me feel stuck in the topper.” The slow, cradling feel helped it stand out among other mattress toppers.

It was also the only topper we tested with adjustable straps, so you can customize the fit to any height mattress, a feature our testers loved. “Typically, straps are just stretchy but you can shorten or lengthen these so the topper stays nice and snug on the mattress,” said one tester. “The edges of the topper lay really nicely on the mattress as well. I don't like when a cover is too loose, and the material shifts, or the fit is too snug, causing deep dips in the corners. The fit on the mattress is one of the best I have seen.” The topper’s thoughtful design earned it a 5/5 for fit.
Testers said the topper looked “high quality” but felt lighter than expected. “The weight makes me think the foam isn't as dense, but lying on it feels supportive and plush,” said one tester. “I think for light and average-weight sleepers, this topper is a great budget option.” The ViscoSoft Select also features mesh, likely to improve breathability and cooling. This was one of the coolest mattress toppers we tested, and we saw a temperature increase just below the 12.5-degree average when we tested it after use with a thermal gun.

The topper performed best on firmer beds, according to our testers. “For most people, I would recommend using this topper on a medium to firm mattress to get that good support but plush feel,” one said. When paired with a firm mattress, our testers found it provided balanced support: soft enough to feel comfortable yet sturdy enough to keep the body aligned.

Saatva is known for its excellent customer service, and this topper has the longest trial period of any topper we tested (180 nights). You can read more about Saatva’s quality and attention to detail in our Saatva mattress review.
Our testing experience with the Saatva Natural Latex Topper
Our testers found this topper well-made, with a thick organic cotton cover and straps that secure it at all four corners, a feature that earned it a 5/5 for fit. “The straps are for sure a bonus and ensure that it won't slide off the bed,” said one tester. At 1.5 inches, this was one of the thinnest toppers we tested, so you won’t sink into it deeply. Our testers were impressed by how supportive and responsive it was to their movement. “The latex feels slightly denser than classic memory foam, yet has a quicker response to pressure,” said one tester with a lighter weight.

“My favorite part is the responsiveness,” said a tester. “It makes it extremely easy to move around and switch sleeping positions. There is absolutely zero 'quicksand effect.'” This made the topper especially appealing for combination sleepers. “I would definitely recommend this to combination sleepers because it practically springs you from one position to the next,” said a tester. This could be a big win for sleepers who toss and turn or wake up often. It earned the Saatva Natural Latex topper a perfect 5/5 for responsiveness and position changes.

Because this topper isn’t very thick, it compresses easily. But our testers found that the latex had enough spring to provide a bit of lift rather than completely collapsing, even at the edges. This helped maintain stability when sitting or sleeping near the edge. When we tested the Saatva Natural Latex topper on both softer and firmer mattresses, our testers noticed a clear difference. “The topper definitely feels firmer with a firmer bed,” said one. “Since it's just one thin layer, you can still feel the bed beneath it. On a soft bed, it feels a lot more pressure-relieving because you can still benefit from the plush comfort layers. On a firm bed, I'd say it adds more bounce than pressure relief.”
With its high-end organic materials and premium construction, this topper feels like a luxury buy but offers great value, providing plenty of support and a little extra spring.

Avocado Eco Organic Latex: Best Mattress Topper for Side Sleepers
We chose the Avocado Eco Organic Latex as the Best Mattress Topper for Side Sleepers because it provides exceptional pressure relief, especially for the most common sleeping position. Natural latex relieves pressure underneath the hips and shoulders, where it tends to build up for side sleepers. Testers also found the organic cotton cover comfortable.

- Supportive and responsive on soft and firm beds
- Material type: Latex
- Thickness: 2”-3”
- Firmness level: Plush or Medium
- Cooling: Breathable latex
- Pressure relief or ergonomic design: Talalay latex for pressure relief
Pros
- Tied for the highest pressure relief score we tested
- Natural and organic materials
- Feels comfortable on different mattress types
Cons
- Not suitable for people with a latex allergy
- No straps to hold it in place
- A one-year warranty is on the shorter side
Why we chose the Avocado Eco Organic Latex as the Best Mattress Topper for Side Sleepers
We selected the Avocado Eco Organic Latex as the Best Mattress Topper for Side Sleepers because it tied for the highest pressure-relief score among all mattress toppers we tested. Side sleepers need extra cushioning at the shoulders and hips, and this topper did that better than almost any other option, earning top marks (a 4.5/5 on a soft mattress and a perfect 5/5 on a firm one). That’s why it was recognized for its superior pressure relief in our roundup of the best mattress toppers for side sleepers.
We also liked that this topper worked well on any kind of mattress. Testers said it “felt like heaven on both soft and firm mattresses,” which is rare for a mattress pad or topper. The use of organic latex and an organic cotton cover also makes this a good option for those seeking support and comfort without harsh chemicals.
Our testing experience with the Avocado Eco Organic Latex Topper
Our testers were very enthusiastic about this topper. “I have to admit, this topper is pretty amazing,” said one. “The latex bouncy feel and the soft organic cover feel like no other topper I have tried.” They appreciated that the Talalay latex was responsive and breathable, and rated the topper a perfect 5/5 for material quality.

Testers reported equal support from this topper, whether on a softer or firmer mattress, and in any sleep position. “Support was great for both firmness levels, and really it came down to your preference,” said one tester. “In each position, I felt great support, spinal alignment, and my body felt weightless.”
People with mobility concerns have little to worry about with this topper, according to our testers. They gave it high marks for edge support (5/5) and noted that its bouncy material improved movement. “Changing positions on this topper was a breeze,” one tester said. “The latex design creates a surface that springs you out of each position. I felt like I was resting on a cloud, but could easily change positions and get right into another comfortable position without waiting for the materials to recover.”

The Avocado Eco Organic Latex Topper offers good value for its price, but it has one of the shortest warranties among the toppers we tested—just one year. Because of its high-quality construction and its ability to relieve pressure on joints and keep the spine aligned without sacrificing plushness, it also earned a place on our roundup of the best mattress toppers for side sleepers.

Bear Pro: Best Cooling Mattress Topper
We chose the Bear Pro Topper as the Best Cooling Mattress Topper because it had the best temperature control of any option we tested, by a wide margin. In our thermal gun test, all other toppers showed double-digit temperature increases after use, but the Bear showed only about a 6-degree increase. Testers also praised this cooling mattress topper for its comfort and ease of care.

Why we chose the Bear Pro as the Best Cooling Mattress Topper
We chose the Bear Pro Topper as the Best Cooling Mattress Topper because it had the lowest temperature increase in our tests: just 6.1 degrees, the only single-digit increase. This standout cooling performance is also why it earned the top overall spot in our roundup of the best cooling mattress toppers.

This crisp-feeling topper also delivered on comfort and support. The dense memory foam relieved pressure without allowing sleepers to sink in too deeply. It also scored well for fit and responsiveness, making it one of the best mattress toppers we tested that still feels easier to move on. The cover is high-quality and removable for simple cleaning, adding long-term value.
Our testing experience with the Bear Pro Topper
Our testers rated the Bear Pro topper as made with high-end materials and awarded it a near-perfect score (4.5/5) in that category. “The memory foam is very heavy and dense,” said one tester. “There is no bounce to the topper, but I wasn't feeling stuck or like it took a lot of effort to move from my side to my back. It was fairly easy to change positions.”
Testers noted that the topper's silky surface could be slightly slippery. “I do feel like I slide off when standing up,” said one. “I think anyone with mobility issues would struggle to stand up, but putting bedsheets that are not slippery may help combat this.”

In our temperature tests, the Bear Pro topper easily outperformed the competition. After a tester lay on this cooling mattress topper, its temperature rose by just 6.1 degrees, less than half as much as the average topper we tested (12.5 degrees). For hot sleepers, this mattress topper could be an excellent addition to a bed that sleeps overly warm.

The Bear Pro topper uses some of the same cooling technology as its memory foam mattress, which we recognized in our roundup of the best cooling mattresses. Copper-infused material and Celliant wick heat away for a cool and comfortable sleep. Given its excellent cooling properties and other perks, the Bear Pro is a good choice for anyone who prefers to stay cool at night and may not be ready to invest in a brand new mattress just yet.

Our process testing the best mattress toppers
Our team has spent thousands of hours testing mattresses, pillows, and mattress toppers to find the best ones for older adults. We compared features such as pressure relief, spinal support, pain relief, edge support, and accessibility. Here are some of the factors we paid particular attention to during our research and testing:
Materials and thickness
The right thickness for a mattress topper depends on several factors, but in general, 2–4 inches is best. Within that range, a topper can provide support and comfort layers without adding enough height to make the mattress unstable. How the mattress is constructed can also have a big impact on the feel of a topper. Materials like latex have more bounce to assist movement, while memory foam may make it more difficult to change positions.
Pain and pressure relief
To test this, we noted how well the mattress toppers cradled sensitive joints like the shoulders, hips, and knees. We made sure that the toppers we recommended here distributed weight evenly to prevent pressure buildup.
Responsiveness
We tested the responsiveness of each mattress topper by measuring how quickly it rebounds after being compressed. A responsive mattress allows you to change positions easily without feeling trapped.
Comfort and firmness
We placed each topper on both a soft and a firm mattress to assess how much it changed the sleep experience. Our testers rated their comfort on each. We also noted which ones may provide better or less support, depending on the type of mattress they're placed on. The right mattress topper can add comfort to a mattress that feels too soft or too firm.

Who should consider a mattress topper
A mattress topper can be a smart choice if you want better sleep without replacing your existing mattress. Mattress toppers can be a simple and affordable way to change how your mattress feels. Many people use a topper to address minor comfort issues and extend the life of their mattress. They are not a substitute for a worn-out mattress that needs replacing.
You may want a mattress topper if your bed feels close to “almost right,” but not quite there. A topper can add softness, firmness, or cooling, depending on your needs. It can also help protect your mattress from wear and tear.
Some reasons you may want to consider buying a mattress topper include if you are:
- Happy with your current mattress, but would like a softer or firmer sleep surface
- A side sleeper who needs more cushion for hips and shoulders
- A back or stomach sleeper who needs extra support
- Waking up sore or stiff in the morning
- Sleeping hot and want to stay cooler at night
- Trying to extend the life of your current mattress
- Sharing a bed and want to reduce motion or pressure points
What to look for when choosing a mattress topper
Choosing the right mattress topper depends on how you sleep and what features are most important to you. Your sleep position, body type, and comfort needs all matter. Some people want more softness, while others need more support or cooling.
Some things to think about when shopping for a mattress topper:
- Thickness: Most mattress toppers are between 2 and 4 inches thick. Thicker toppers can provide more cushioning but may also require deeper sheets. Side sleepers often benefit from three inches or more of cushioning to support the shoulders and hips. Back and stomach sleepers may prefer a thinner topper that won’t cause the body to sink and throw off spinal alignment.
- Materials: Like mattresses, toppers can be made of memory foam, latex, and even microcoils. Memory foam is great for pressure relief and contouring. It works well for side sleepers and people with joint pain. Latex feels more responsive and bouncy, making it easier to move around. It is a good choice for combination sleepers. Personal preference plays a big role in what material feels best.
- Firmness: A medium-firm to firm mattress topper helps keep the spine aligned while still relieving pressure.3 This is especially important for back and stomach sleepers. A firmer topper may also help if your mattress has started to sag. Side sleepers may prefer a softer topper that allows some sink at the shoulders and hips. The key is finding a balance between comfort and support based on your sleep position.
- Temperature control: If you sleep hot, cooling features in a topper can make a big difference. Gel-infused foam, phase-change covers, and breathable fabrics help pull heat away from the body. These features can help you stay cool and comfortable through the night.
- Cleaning and care: Some mattress toppers come with removable covers that can be machine-washed. This makes cleaning easier and is especially useful for people with allergies, kids, or pets. Always check care instructions before buying. Toppers without washable covers may require spot cleaning. Simple care can help your topper stay fresh and last longer.
- Trial periods and warranties: Most companies offer a trial period to test the topper at home and return it if it does not work for you. This can give peace of mind when shopping online. A good warranty shows the brand stands behind its product and can protect your purchase over time. Warranties can range from one to 10 years, while the average trial period for a mattress topper is 30 nights.
How much do the best mattress toppers cost?
The best mattress toppers on our list range from $235 to $532 for a queen-size. When choosing the right mattress topper for your budget, consider the overall value of the product, including shipping costs, warranty length, and trial period length.

Frequently asked questions
What should I look for when choosing the best mattress topper for my sleep style?
When choosing a mattress topper, consider the material, firmness, and thickness. People who sleep on their sides tend to do well with softer, thicker mattress toppers; back and stomach sleepers benefit from a medium-firm to firm topper.
Is a mattress topper worth it, or should I replace my mattress instead?
A mattress topper works well if your mattress has only minor wear or you want to tweak comfort or temperature. But if your mattress is sagging, has deep impressions, or you wake with persistent pain, a full mattress replacement is the better long-term solution.
What type of mattress topper is best for back, hip, or shoulder pain?
The best mattress topper for back, hip, or shoulder pain is a medium-firm memory foam topper that contours the body while still supporting the spine.
How long do mattress toppers last, and when should I replace one?
Most mattress toppers last about 2–5 years, depending on the material and care. You should replace yours if it loses shape or support, has impressions that won’t go away, or you are consistently waking with pain.
