The newest scales can do more for your health journey than measure your weight. Many of the best scales integrate with a Bluetooth app. This lets you easily track metrics like body mass index (BMI), muscle mass, and body fat percentage. Some of the digital scales on this list even integrate with fitness apps like Apple Health or Google Fit.
But the best bathroom scales aren't worth the price if they're hard to use. That’s why we tested top scales for comfort, grip, and how secure they felt to stand on. We looked at key factors that make a scale usable, like display size and how difficult the readings were to read. We also looked at how straightforward the connected apps were to use. Read on for the scales we recommend.

Who should consider a scale?
Weight loss (or gain) isn't the only reason to consider a scale. Many smart scales capture more than just weight. They can measure body composition and estimate metrics like body fat, muscle mass, and water weight. But features vary by model, so check what each scale measures before you buy. People who may benefit from a scale include:
- Those concerned about sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss). Losing muscle mass with age is common. Tracking your muscle mass can help you notice changes and adjust your diet and exercise accordingly.
- People monitoring weight gain. Beyond muscle mass, some smart scales can estimate body fat, visceral fat (fat that lines your abdomen), and water weight.3
- Those at risk for osteoporosis. A few smart scales estimate bone density. While a scale isn't a diagnostic tool, it may give you an early signal worth discussing with your doctor. Bone density isn't always included in body composition measurements, so check the specs before assuming it offers one.
- People on a fitness journey. A basic smart scale can still track your weight trends over time. Many models can sync with popular fitness apps like Google Fit and Apple Health.
What are the different types of scales?
Some bathroom scales focus solely on weight. Others focus on total body composition. Some use electrodes to measure how much fat, muscle, water, and more are in your body. Others rely on the spring-based technology we’ve used for many years. Each type of scale has its pros and cons.
Analog
Usually much more affordable than smart scales, analog step-on scales offer one reading: your weight. Battery-free and spring-based, analog scales don’t require an app. Your body's weight compresses the springs. The compressed springs trigger the dial system, and the dial shows a single number. While no scale should be exposed to water, an analog scale is the most likely to still function after getting wet. An analog scale is also safe for people with pacemakers.
Digital
Digital bathroom scales use strain gauges and voltage to measure weight. Research has shown digital scales to be accurate for home weight and BMI measurements.2 Digital scales that measure weight without sending electrical pulses through the body may be an option for people with pacemakers. Ask your cardiologist whether a specific scale is appropriate for you.
Smart
A smart scale connects to a personal device, like a smartphone or tablet, via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. It pairs with an app, and your scale data syncs to track your measurements over time. Typically, the app you use with your scale is from the scale's manufacturer. But you may also be able to sync that data to other health apps you use.
Body composition
Not all smart scales measure body composition. A body composition scale measures your weight and the percentage of your body that's fat, water, bone, and muscle. Many body composition scales can also measure your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). This estimates how many calories your body burns at rest.
How scales measure your body composition
Body composition is a key factor in your health. Body composition measurements include muscle mass, bone density, and body fat percentage. Body composition scales can help you better track concerns like muscle mass loss, obesity, and the onset of osteoporosis.4
Body composition scales use electrodes in the platform or handlebar to send electrical pulses through the body. Your body becomes the electrical circuit for the measurement.1 After the electrical pulses pass through you, the scale tracks how quickly the current returns. The muscle, bone, fat, and water that make up our bodies resist that electrical pulse in different amounts.
Water conducts electricity. Muscle contains water, and so does fat (to a lesser extent). Smart scales use the water composition in your fat, muscles, and body water to gauge your body composition. Put simply: The electric pulse moves through muscles faster than fat. A slower pulse return leads to a higher body-fat reading.
Most smart scales send an electric pulse from your feet. But some smart scales have handlebars that can send more pulses. The handle allows readings from the upper body, as well as the readings the feet electrodes make.
What to look for when buying a scale
Some of these smart scales can be a big financial commitment. To make sure you’re investing in the right one, consider which qualities matter to your fitness journey and lifestyle. Here are the factors we recommend evaluating:
Metrics
Some smart scales measure seven metrics. Others collect data on 45 or more. The most available metrics are weight, BMI, muscle mass, body fat, visceral fat, and basal metabolic rate. Your personal health journey might inform which smart scale you need. If all you’re tracking is weight and muscle mass, all the smart scales on this list can do that. But if you’re monitoring body water or bone loss, you may want a smart scale with a handlebar for more upper-body analysis.
Display quality
Crisp, high-contrast screens are the easiest to read from far away. The smart scales on this list have a self-lit OLED screen and scored high for readability. If you still find the scale screen hard to read, the two handlebar smart scales (Oxiline and Hume Body Pod) might be worth the extra cost.
Multiple user support
Every smart scale on this list supports multiple users, but not all of them make it simple. The Hume Health Body Pod allows only one phone to connect to it at a time, though the app supports 24 users. So sharing this scale will require pairing and unpairing your phone after you weigh in. The A&D Medical Bluetooth Body Composition Scale supports up to two users. But the Renpho Elis Nova supports eight users on the scale (and unlimited users in the app).
App compatibility
Bluetooth-compatible smart scales do more than help you see and track your data. Some of them feature apps that let you export or share trends with your health care provider. The Oxiline Scale MD Pro can generate PDFs of your health data trends to share with your doctor.
Look for a scale that works with your smartphone so you can easily track your health data. All the scales on this list have apps. But the Renpho Elis Nova Smart Body Scale's app may not work with older phones.
Platform size
The smart scales on this list are roughly 11–13 inches wide. This size works well for discreet storage. But you may want a scale with a wider platform if you have bigger feet or a wider stance. Our testers were slightly concerned that some of these scales may leave users' heels hanging off the edge.
Pacemaker compatibility
Body composition scales take your measurements by sending electric currents through your body. Because this involves electrical pulses, they may not be safe for all users. People with pacemakers or other implanted cardiac devices should ask their cardiologists before using a body composition scale.1
Weight limit
The scales on this list can support users weighing up to approximately 400 pounds. A wide-base scale has a larger platform and sits lower to the ground for more stability. A&D Medical's Premium+ Wide Base scale supports up to 550 pounds.
How much do the best scales cost?
The best scales on this list cost between $39–400. Higher-tech scales measure more body composition metrics. The two handlebar electric scales on our list measure more upper-body composition factors. This level of individualized data costs more, often hundreds of dollars.
Many of the scales on this list are flexible savings account (FSA) and health savings account (HSA) eligible. FSA funds can’t be used once you’re retired, and you can’t contribute to an HSA once you’re enrolled in Medicare. Some of these retailers also run frequent promotions that can help lower the cost.

Frequently asked questions
Which scale is the most accurate?
Scale accuracy depends on which measurements matter most to you. Some metrics, like body water or BMI, a smart scale with a handlebar may measure more accurately. Handlebar scales offer an upper-body scan as well as the standard scan from the feet upward. But if weight is the measurement you care most about, any of the scales on this list are accurate.
Can you use a BIA smart scale with a pacemaker?
A Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) smart scale uses electrical currents to measure body composition. These may interfere with pacemakers and other implanted cardiac devices. Ask your cardiologist before using one.
Does humidity affect bathroom scales?
Yes. Humidity may affect some bathroom scales over time. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for where and how to store your scale.
