Sennheiser offers both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids. Both options come from the same parent company, so they may share similar sound technology. That means the OTC All-Day Clear may offer some of the sound clarity and features people expect from Sennheiser. It may also cost less and be easier to buy than a prescription device.

The Sonite R, a prescription hearing aid sold at Costco, was included in our Best Costco Hearing Aids review. People interested in that model might also want to compare it with the OTC All-Day Clear.

Sennheiser is a well-known name in the audio world. The company has been making headphones, microphones, and other listening devices since 1945. It brings that strong audio experience to its prescription and OTC hearing aids. In 2022, the company was acquired by Sonova, another leading hearing aid manufacturer and parent company of Phonak. Today, Sennheiser makes hearing aids known for their natural sound and smart features. In this Sennheiser hearing aid review, we compare a popular OTC model and a prescription device. Learn about the Sennheiser All-Day Clear and how it compares to the Sonite R.

If you are considering purchasing any kind of hearing aids, schedule an appointment with an audiologist or hearing care professional to get your hearing tested first. Doing so can tell you whether you need OTC or prescription hearing aids and give you an idea of what other factors to consider before you buy.

Why Sennheiser is a top brand for hearing aids

Sennheiser has decades of audio experience. It shows in the sound quality of its best hearing aids. The company aims to replicate natural speech even in noisy settings. Whether you are talking with friends or sitting in a busy restaurant, the devices work to clarify the sounds you want to focus on.

Another key feature is intelligent sound processing. Sennheiser hearing aids automatically detect changes in your surroundings. Then they adjust your settings as needed. This means the hearing aids can respond differently in a quiet room than they do in a crowded space. The goal is to reduce the need for constant manual adjustments throughout the day.

Sennheiser also puts a strong focus on comfort and ease of use. Many models feature lightweight receiver-in-canal (RIC) designs that are comfortable for all-day wear. Bluetooth allows users to stream music, podcasts, and phone calls directly to their hearing aids. The companion apps make it easier to adjust volume and sound settings. So users have more control over their listening experience.

What our testers thought of the Sennheiser All-Day Clear

Our testers were most impressed by the sound quality of these hearing aids. They rated it a 5/5, the highest possible score. “Sennheiser All-Day Clear is true to its name,” said one tester. “The sound is exceptionally clean and natural-sounding. The most natural out of all the hearing aids I have tried. It’s like I am not wearing hearing aids, but I was able to have all the sounds I wanted louder, more clear and amplified.”

Testers wished they had an audible signal like a click to know when the hearing aids were in place for charging.

Testers also gave high marks (4/5) to the All-Day Clear’s noise-canceling abilities. “The hearing aids did really well in the restaurant setting,” said one tester. Our testers noted they could hear well even without using the device's noise-cancellation feature. “The hearing aids were able to pick up my partner's voice, and it felt separate from the background noise,” she said.

These RIC-style hearing aids are not the most discreet option (rated only 3/5), but testers found them comfortable and secure. They said the All-Day Clears stayed in place during daily activities. Testers also found the app controls easier to figure out than some others we tested. Several noted that there are only two listening programs: Automatic and Live Music. Even with those limitations, our testers loved the combination of excellent sound quality, comfortable fit, and straightforward controls. Overall, the Sennheiser All Day Clear earned one of the highest scores in our testing (9.6/10).

What to know about the Sennheiser Sonite R

One of the biggest strengths of the Sennheiser Sonite R is its focus on conversation. It's designed to help people hear speech from the side and behind them, which can be helpful in social situations. The Sonite R automatically adapts to changing environments. This feature reduces the need to constantly adjust settings throughout the day.

The Sonite R also includes Bluetooth connectivity. Users can stream phone calls, music, and other audio directly to their hearing aids. Its rechargeable battery reaches full charge in about three hours and can run 18–31 hours. Streaming or other smart features will drain it faster. The charger includes a magnetic retention system. It guides the hearing aids into place during charging.

The Sonite R carries an IP68 rating for dust and moisture resistance, making it suitable for everyday wear. We did not test the Sonite R, but users can make adjustments through the companion mobile app, just like with the All-Day Clear. The Sonite R aims to offer speech clarity, convenience, and everyday reliability.

Sennheiser hearing aids costs

The hearing aids in this review cost between $1,400–$1,600 per pair. Usually, prescription hearing aid manufacturers do not publish the prices of their devices. But because the Sonite R is made for and sold exclusively at Costco, its price ($1,600) is available.

Most insurance plans, including Medicare Part A and Part B, do not cover the full cost of hearing aids. Medicare Advantage (Part C) may cover some of your hearing aid costs.2 For more information, see our articles on Medicare and hearing health. If you have a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending accounts (FSA), you may also be able to use that money to buy hearing aids. Both have limitations. FSA funds can’t be used once you’re retired. And you might not be able to contribute to an HSA once you’re enrolled in Medicare. Check with your insurance provider to see what’s covered.

Sennheiser features and accessories

Sennheiser hearing aids offer hearing support and wireless connectivity. The brand also offers optional accessories that can make everyday listening easier. The accessories available depend on the hearing aid platform. The OTC All-Day Clear accessories focus on simple setup and convenience. The prescription Sonite R offers a wider range of accessories for users who want more control and connectivity.

Many of these accessories aim to help users hear better in specific situations. These include watching TV, talking in noisy places, or managing hearing aid settings without using a smartphone. Depending on your needs, these add-ons can improve the overall hearing experience.

Are Sennheiser hearing aids right for you?

Finding the right hearing aid depends on several factors. Consider your level of hearing loss, budget, and comfort with technology. For mild to moderate hearing loss, the Sennheiser All-Day Clear may be a good option. It offers a self-directed device with clear sound. Those with more complex hearing needs may require a professional fitting and follow-up care. A prescription device like Sonite R may be a better fit.

Technology comfort also plays a role. Users who are comfortable using smartphone apps and making adjustments on their own may do well with the All-Day Clear. The Sonite R may be a better choice for people who want help from a hearing care professional. The Sonite R also offers access to a broader range of accessories and customization options.

Will a Sennheiser hearing aid fit your hearing needs, lifestyle, and budget? Consider the following:

  • Is my hearing loss mild, moderate, or more severe?
  • Do I want professional hearing testing and fitting services?
  • Am I comfortable using smartphone apps to manage my hearing aids?
  • How important is direct streaming from TVs and other devices?
  • Do I need accessories for difficult listening environments?
  • What is my budget for hearing aids and accessories?
