Evidence-Based Programs: GaitACTIVE

GaitACTIVE (Advanced Cognitive Training in Virtual Exercise) is an evidence-based fall prevention program designed to reduce fall risk by enhancing mobility, balance, and cognitive function in older adults. The program combines motor and cognitive training on a treadmill, using virtual simulation to create an engaging, immersive experience. Targeting adults 60+ with a history of falls or fear of falling, GaitACTIVE consists of 15 sessions over 8 weeks, with twice-weekly, 30-minute guided sessions. Participants practice walking while performing interactive, gamified cognitive tasks, improving attention, reaction time, and balance under real-world conditions.

Falls are the leading cause of injury in older adults, often due to impaired dual-tasking—walking while thinking. GaitACTIVE addresses this by training both body and mind simultaneously. Clinical trials demonstrate up to 70% reduction in fall rate, improved gait stability, and enhanced confidence and quality of life.

Target Audience: The program targets older adults aged 60 and above, individuals with a history of falls or concerns about falling, older adults experiencing gait impairments due to neurological conditions (e.g., mild cognitive impairment, Parkinson’s disease, MS), and community-dwelling seniors seeking to improve balance, mobility, and confidence

Health Outcomes:

  • Reduced fall risk
  • Improved mobility and gait stability
  • Enhanced Cognitive-Motor Function and Dual-Tasking Ability
  • Increased Confidence and Reduced Fear of Falling

Delivered By: 1 Trained Lay Leader/facilitator, Certified Health Coach, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Certified Fitness Instructor and/or a certified volunteer

Training: The training consists of two on-site sessions totaling approximately 3 to 4 hours. The first session covers operational training, including system setup, safety, baseline assessments, and troubleshooting. The second focuses on program implementation, addressing participant management, scheduling, progression, and maintaining fidelity. A hands-on practice session follows to build facilitator confidence. Training refresher can be performed remotely.

Program Type: Individual

Format: In-person in Community

Length: The program runs for 8 weeks total, with two sessions per week (15 sessions total). Each session lasts about 30 minutes and includes two 10-minute walking trials (adaptable as needed). Flexibility is built in; sessions can occur more frequently, and walking durations can be adjusted based on participant needs. To meet program requirements, a minimum of 12 sessions and 24 total walking trials must be completed.
