May 19, 2026, Arlington, Virginia—The following is a statement from Ramsey Alwin, President and CEO of the National Council on Aging, on the May 18 U.S. Supreme Court ruling rejecting drug companies’ challenges to Medicare drug price negotiations under the Inflation Reduction Act.

“We are pleased with the court’s decision to reject appeals that challenged Medicare’s right to negotiate drug prices. These negotiations will save Medicare $6 billion per year and will save people with Medicare prescription drug plans $1.5 billion in out-of-pocket costs.

“This is no pocket change when 15% of older adults live in poverty and half of those age 60 and older cannot afford basic needs

“With 11,000 people turning 65 every day, this decision helps ensure Medicare will be there for Americans when they need it. A majority of older adults have at least one chronic condition, while nearly 79% have two or more. Lower drug prices will free up some of their limited income, so they can afford other necessities.

“At NCOA, we believe Medicare affordability is not just a policy issue—it is a matter of dignity, health, and economic security for every older American. We applaud the Court for protecting that.”
