Caregiving Happens: Ask 74-Year-Old Linda Who Cared for Her Aging Mother
2 min read
For more than 10 years, Linda, whose name was changed to protect her privacy, was unable to work while she cared for her aging mother, depending only on her small Social Security payments and food benefits.
At the age of 74, Linda had very few job prospects. She found herself depending upon the generosity of family and friends to pay rent. The outlook was dim. That's when Linda turned to NCOA’s job training and placement center in North Carolina—one of 24 centers we manage around the country. Our team helped Linda build her computer skills and improve her digital literacy. Then, we introduced her to a local company for an on-the-job training opportunity.
Within a few weeks, Linda earned a permanent position that includes benefits to provide her security and financial independence. We are honored that Linda refers her friends and acquaintances to NCOA's the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), so they can explore the program that transformed her life.
