We consulted with Amanda Weeks, an occupational therapist specializing in older adults at B. Well Health in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to fully understand common issues that affect older adults and how adjustable beds may be of benefit to them. “Conditions affecting muscles, joints, or the brain can have a significant impact on both mobility and sleep,” said Weeks. She said she frequently encounters patients with breathing problems, chronic pain conditions, and neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, and that many of these patients may find adjustable bases helpful.

Saatva is also one of the few brands that will remove your old mattress and base at no cost. If you’re over age 65, a teacher, or a military veteran, you can also get $225 off purchases of more than $1,000.

Saatva Adjustable Base Plus legs are adjustable up to 18 inches, one of the highest in the industry (rivaling the 18.25-inch adjustable legs on the Sleep Number FlexFit 3 Smart Base). Higher bed frames can help taller individuals stand up from bed with less effort. And if standing from a seated position is painful for your knees, hips, or lower back due to conditions like arthritis, a taller surface can help reduce stress and pain in those areas as you sit or stand.

Excessively tall surfaces relative to your height may also be difficult to navigate, though, so consider testing different bed heights at a Saatva location or during the in-home setup before committing to the highest setting.

This adjustable base also helps you to reach your nightstand more easily with its wall-hugging design, keeping the head of the bed against the wall even as it is adjusted to a different position. Beds without this function will move away from the wall and your nightstand as you adjust the bed to sit up, but a wall-hugging bed keeps you in place so you don’t have to reach behind you for your bedside items.

Saatva had an impressive reputation on review websites when this article was written. BBB gives this brand an A+ score, with a 4.75 out of 5 star rating from more than 1,600 reviews. On Trustpilot, it has a 4.5 out of 5 star rating with more than 1,000 reviews.

Customers describe Saatva as accommodating and high-quality, and they report positive interactions with customer service. Negative reviewers are few and far between, but the few one-star comments report its products aren’t durable and wear out over time.

Sealy Ease Power Base gets our “Best Budget-Friendly Option” because of its low price compared to other brands in the industry. While the average price of the best adjustable bases is about $1,854, this power base is $999 for a queen size base, which includes in-home delivery, professional assembly, and a lengthy 25-year warranty.

Unfortunately, low-cost adjustable bases come with fewer features. This base doesn’t offer a massage feature or customizable settings, but you do get to enjoy standard head and foot adjustability. The wireless remote control offers two one-touch settings: a zero-gravity setting that raises the head and foot of the bed for a cradled position, and a flat setting that returns you to a horizontal position.

This base is a simple option, but sometimes less is more. Many adjustable bases have more features than you need, increasing the cost. Even without all the frills, Sealy Ease Power Base offers comfort to those who sleep well in a reclined bed position, and easier mobility for those who want to use the adjustable head to help them get out of bed.

Online customer reviews for Sealy are limited, so it’s difficult to determine if customers are satisfied with its products. The brand has a B- grade on BBB, but no reviews. Trustpilot gives it 2.9 out of 5 stars with only two reviews.

The Puffy Serenity Adjustable Base offers the longest trial period and warranty of any option in our review, making it the best option for older adults who are unsure if an adjustable base is the right choice. You can test out its features, like standard foot and head adjustments and under-bed lighting, in the comfort of your own home. Be sure to test its dual massage feature, which targets your head and feet with three different intensities, to see if you enjoy it. If this bed is not a good fit, you may be better off with the more cost-effective Sealy Ease Power Base (described above), which has basic adjustments only.

If you’re unhappy with your base within 101 days of your purchase, you can return it for a full refund. The caveat is you must try it for a full 14 days before initiating a return. After the mandatory 14-day period, you can reach out to customer support and an agent will issue your refund and send someone to pick up the base for free.

Puffy also offers a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty, which covers the cost of parts when there’s a malfunction or defect. You may be liable for shipping and labor costs, though. Even though the warranty covers the lifetime of the product, it is only good for as long as you own the bed; if you transfer ownership, you’ll void the warranty.

The disadvantage of Puffy is it doesn’t offer in-home setup or old mattress removal, not even for a fee. This means you’ll have to assemble this 134-pound base by yourself or hire someone to do it for you, although we recommend the latter. According to our Reviews Team’s survey, 50% of respondents over age 54 reported that self-assembling their adjustable base was difficult. Casper Adjustable Base Max  earned “Best for Basics” in this review for its wall-hugging feature and in-home setup options—and earned “Best for Older Adults” in our best adjustable bed roundup. Although Puffy offers a longer trial period, it lacks those options, making Casper the safer choice for those with low mobility.

And unlike Saatva, you can test out your Casper base to ensure it’s the right choice for you before fully committing. While you might have to pay $199 for in-home setup and old mattress removal, many brands don’t offer this service at all, so it’s nice to have it as an option.

Casper has a few outstanding features besides the wall-hugging feature, like under-bed lighting to help you see at night and isolated neck tilt to fine tune your positioning. Casper Adjustable Base Max also includes a four-zone massage that targets the neck, shoulders, back, and feet.

If you’re trying to decide between Casper and Saatva and other changes to your home, consider contacting a certified aging-in-place specialist who can evaluate your home to determine which modifications are most appropriate for your needs. You can also ask your doctor for a referral to a physical or occupational therapist who can evaluate you and make recommendations based on the results of a mobility and strength assessment.

The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Ergo ProSmart Base is one of the best-equipped adjustable bed frames for those who have chronic pain, particularly in the lower back, which is why we named it “Best for Back Pain.” Although adjustable bases and mattresses should never be the first line of defense when addressing pain, they can help when used alongside proper treatment under clinical guidance.

Aside from basic adjustability and preset positions, Tempur-Pedic is one of the few bases that offers adjustable lumbar support. The base comes with a built-in bar that can be raised up to six inches to support your lower back.

The TEMPUR-Ergo ProSmart Base also offers three unique features to help you fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night—features that are especially important if your body is recovering from injury or illness. Sleep Number FlexFit 3 Smart Base offers you a way to reduce your partner’s snoring from disrupting your sleep. Split king and split California king bases, which are divided into two smaller bases for individual adjustability, allow you to control your partner’s head position. Select the snore-reduction preset to slightly elevate your partner’s head to open the airway and prevent snoring from impacting their sleep—and yours.

Beware of loud snoring, which may need medical attention, as it could indicate a more serious condition called sleep apnea. If the tracker shows you’re waking more often, it could be the result of increased snoring. You should seek care from your doctor or ask for further testing to determine whether you have sleep apnea.

The app also serves as the bed’s wireless remote control, so Sleep Number doesn’t include a traditional wireless remote with your purchase. The option to use a physical remote control is still available, though. If you’d rather use a physical remote instead of your phone to control your bed, you can add one to your purchase at checkout for $49.

Tempur-Pedic was a close contender for this pick, but it detects snoring by using its app to listen to you during sleep instead of detecting motion, a feature our Reviews Team found concerning. A bed with this type of fine-tuned adjustability can be especially helpful for caregivers who assist with regular self-care and home mobility, since bed positioning can help your caregivers with the physical effort needed to accomplish bed transfers and position changes. But for those who need high-level assistance for advanced medical conditions, a hospital bed may be a more appropriate option to look into before making a non-refundable adjustable bed purchase.

If you’re looking for advanced adjustability but are not a candidate for a hospital bed, the Reverie R650 Adjustable Power Base may be a good alternative. Make sure to test and use the inverted tilt feature safely in a showroom before making your purchase decision. One of the risks of using an inverted bed is that standing up too quickly from an inverted position can make you feel light-headed and faint, so it’s important to take your time getting out of bed.

Nectar earns 2.5 out of 5 stars on BBB and has 256 reviews. The most recent reviews with high marks pertain to Nectar mattresses, while the lower recent reviews reference quality issues like mold and stains. However, Nectar actively addresses customer reviews and concerns in a timely manner.

On Trustpilot, Nectar receives 4.2 out of 5 stars with 13,280 reviews. Similar issues were reported on both sites, and high marks were received for the mattress materials—though “softening” takes time. Additionally, reviewers seem pleased with Nectar’s seamless ordering and delivery services. Like on BBB, Nectar is equally attentive in responding to concerning reviews on Trustpilot.

We did not see any reviews referring to negative quality or experiences with adjustable bed frames.

Although an adjustable bed allows you to customize your position, it doesn’t offer as many medical benefits as a hospital bed.

Occupational therapist Amanda Weeks told us hospital beds may be more appropriate for those with specific conditions like bed sores. This is especially true if you have sensory impairments or mobility challenges that make it difficult for you to detect and manage new or worsening pressure injuries.

According to Weeks, hospital beds have other key differences from adjustable beds that may be more appropriate if you’re receiving regular care:

• Specialized mattresses that assist in pressure distribution
• Handrails that help patients adjust themselves or find stability during movement
• Wheels that allow caregivers to move the bed as needed to change sheets and maneuver the care recipient
• Insurance eligibility for covering the cost of the bed as durable medical equipmentⓘ Medical equipment expected to last at least three years, prescribed for in-home use for a medical reason.

“Something else I see when someone is choosing between a hospital or adjustable bed is adjustable beds are available in different sizes, while a hospital bed is typically just a twin size,” said Weeks. “If you want to sleep next to your loved one, this can be a big deciding factor.”

If you need help adjusting your position in bed, but have not been prescribed a hospital bed, consider making different adjustments, such as investing in a better mattress. But consider carefully the firmness of the mattress before settling on one. “Although plush mattresses are commonly associated with comfort, they can be challenging to move on when you have [muscle] weakness,” said Weeks. She recommends a firmer mattress that doesn’t sink as you try to get out of bed. You can also equip your bed with support rails, similar to those on hospital beds. But be aware that adult portable bed rails carry some safety concerns.

Although it varies among individuals, Kadlecek said adjustable beds can help alleviate symptoms of acid reflux, snoring, and sleep apnea by raising the head higher than the rest of the body. They can also help improve circulation and reduce swelling in the legs and feet by elevating the legs.

Although Kadlecek agreed adjustable beds could lessen back pain by allowing for different sleeping positions, he also warned some users may not feel a difference in pain levels at all. “It’s important to consult with a health care provider about whether an adjustable bed might benefit specific health conditions,” he said.

The same survey also showed 48% of respondents in the same age group used the adjustability function to improve their ability to get out of bed. Getting out of bed safely isn’t just important in the morning. Weeks added she often sees cases where older adults must urinate frequently due to prostate conditions or an overactive bladder. Nighttime trips to the bathroom pose a serious risk of injury if you’re not able to move through the dark confidently, she explained.

“Home safety factors like low lighting or clutter on the floor, coupled with sleep grogginess and the urgency to use the bathroom, significantly increases falls risk when getting out of bed,” said Weeks. Adjustable bases with under-bed lighting and a built-in flashlight in the remote control can help you get to the bathroom safely when it’s dark. And if you sleep alone, choosing a twin-size adjustable frame can free up walkable space in compact bedrooms, making the path to your bathroom easier to navigate.

Adjustable beds come with a range of features that can help you age in place safely. For some, they can have life-changing effects on sleep quality and pain relief, but only when used in conjunction with proper clinical guidance. “Regular physical activity, tailored to individual capabilities, can significantly improve sleep, mobility, and overall health,” Kadlecek said.

If you or a care recipient are looking into purchasing an adjustable bed base to address pain, low mobility, or a medical condition, consult with a health care professional first. Ask your doctor for a referral to a sleep specialist to assess your sleep patterns, or to a physical or occupational therapist who can evaluate you and your home to determine a treatment plan.
