Some companies offer discounts for certain professions, like health care workers, military members and veterans, first responders, teachers, students, and older adults. There are five different types of mattresses, each made of a combination of different materials, like latex foam, steel coils, and air-filled chambers.

• Foam or memory foam: These mattresses are completely made from layers of foam that can have different properties. Memory foams balance support and cushioning, while high-density base foams are firm and keep the sleeper supported. Gel foams may be used for cooling or further cushioning.

Several factors to consider before buying a mattress include:

• Size: You may consider your body size as well as any partners sharing the bed with you. Queen mattresses are 80 inches long by 60 inches wide, whereas king mattresses are 16 inches wider. Some mattress companies advise individuals with larger bodies to opt for king-size mattresses that may offer more support.
• Firmness: The firmness of a mattress, also called the “comfort level” or “feel,” is a subjective rating between soft and firm. Firmness can also be graded on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being too soft and 10 being too firm. Systematic reviews of studies have shown that mattresses labeled “medium firm” are the best for promoting sleep quality and comfort.⁵,⁶ Newer studies show that zoned mattresses can also help with sleep quality and comfort.³
