Sleep is a key pillar of overall health that becomes even more important as you age. Quality sleep helps strengthen cognition and the ability to think clearly and pay attention [1] Worley SL. The Extraordinary Importance of Sleep: The Detrimental Effects of Inadequate Sleep on Health and Public Safety Drive an Explosion of Sleep Research. Pharmacy and Therapeutics. December 2018. . Choosing a good mattress with a surface that supports you through the night is crucial to your well-being. Otherwise, you may experience pain and joint discomfort, never becoming comfortable enough to fully relax into a deep, restorative night’s rest.

“Consistently sleeping in a position that supports spinal alignment can contribute to better posture during waking hours,” said chiropractic physician Steve Smiley, DC, of Smiley Family Chiropractic in Indianapolis. “Good posture can reduce the risk of musculoskeletal problems and enhance your overall appearance and self-confidence.”

Leesa, a popular mattress brand founded in 2014, is known for being an eco-friendly brand with a social conscience, using organic and recycled materials in their mattresses designed for maximum comfort and pressure relief. Leesa has 12 models available, and our Reviews Team thoroughly tested three. Below are the results of our comprehensive mattress testing.

Pros and cons of the Leesa Original mattress
Pros Excellent cushioning for side sleepers Easy to move around and switch positions Memory foam designed for cooling A luxury feel at an affordable price Cons Weak edge support Might be too soft for stomach sleepers Polyurethane foam The chemical odor given off from a new mattress. The smell is harmless and is usually gone within the first few days
Our expert take

Leesa Original is made of three layers of memory foam topped by a lightweight knit cover. Our testers found the medium surface responsive yet easy to move around on and shift positions. A combination of lower-density breathable foam on top cradles while a layer of support foam beneath offers pressure relief. Finally, you’re supported by a sturdy base layer of high-density foam. Lessa rates its overall firmness rating between 5–7, but our testers thought it was on the softer end of that scale at 5.5.

Side sleepers and those who crave extra cushioning to avoid joint pain may find this mattress cradling and supportive. Combination sleepers may also love how naturally they can move around. This mattress is not for everyone, though. Due to its softness, stomach sleepers and higher-weight back sleepers may require a firmer, more supportive model.

From our tester

One of our testers found the foam edges weak and cautioned that some sleepers may feel safer in the center of the bed.

Additional Information

The Leesa Original was the brand’s very first mattress. At 10 inches thick, it’s made entirely of foam and designed to be cooling. Breathability is a major plus, especially given that other memory foams are known for overheating. Its cloud-like surface is great for side sleepers, offering comfort and pressure relief at an affordable price.

Pros and cons of the Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress
Pros Performed well on motion transfer tests Cushiony and pressure-relieving Easy to shift and change positions Cons Not very bouncy Too plush for stomach sleepers Higher price tag than other models
Our expert take

The Leesa Legend Hybrid is reminiscent of a resort-like mattress due to its luxurious feel. The soft knit cover is made from organic cotton, merino wool, and recycled materials. At first, you’ll sink into the top layer of foam, crafted with holes throughout for enhanced breathability and airflow. Below that, there’s a firmer layer of high-density foam designed specifically for pressure relief. Our tester mentioned how resilient the surface was and noted that it quickly regained its original shape after pressing down on the foam top.

This hybrid mattress combines the comfort of foam with the strength and resilience of metal springs. Two layers contain springs: one is a mixture of wrapped micro-springs and stabilizing foam, and the other is made of larger wrapped springs for stability, motion transfer, and edge support.

As a result, the mattress isolates motion, making it a good option for couples who don’t want to be disturbed by their partner’s movements. Also, if you tend to change positions during the night or sleep close to the edge, our testers reported feeling steady and supported on this mattress without fear of falling off the sides.

The Leesa Legend Hybrid works especially well for back, side, and combination sleepers due to its flexible surface that evenly distributes weight and isolates motion. While our testers found side-sleeping cozy and were cradled in their shoulders and hips, stomach-sleeping was not as ideal. One tester felt their spine dipping in the middle. Depending on your body type, you may need additional support if you rest on your belly.

Additional Information

The Leesa Legend Hybrid is a luxury mattress that feels like a cradle or a deep hug. You may love this mattress if you’re looking for cushioning and a high-end sleep experience.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

  • Side and back sleepers looking for shoulder and hip cradling
  • People who sleep hot and want a surface with breathability and airflow
  • Combination sleepers who want to move around easily without sinking

Who may want to avoid it

  • Stomach sleepers may need a firmer surface for lower body support
  • People sticking to a budget—look for promotions to avoid paying full price
  • Higher-weight individuals who need a more supportive mattress for comfort

Leesa Sapira Hybrid

  • Material: Hybrid

  • Trial period: 100 days
  • Shipping: Free

Pros and cons of the Leesa Sapira Hybrid mattress
Pros Gentle cradling and ample support Features lower back contouring for spinal alignment Comfortable for higher-weight to average-weight side sleepers Cons Motion transfer may disturb light sleepers May be too soft for stomach sleepers Off-gassing from synthetic materials
Our expert take

You’ll experience three layers of foam, each with a different purpose. There’s a gentle cradle from the low-density top foam in direct contact with your body. For support, you’ll find a contouring and pressure relief layer accompanied by a transition layer. Higher-weight side sleepers and lighter-weight back sleepers will love the cradling and pressure relief. One of our testers found it especially cozy when lying flat on their back or stomach.
Whatever position you sleep in, finding a mattress that supports your spine and lower back is important. “Everyone could benefit from sleeping with good spinal alignment,” said Christian Busch, a doctor of physical therapy in Asheville, North Carolina. “Lying on your side or your back is best for spinal alignment with one pillow, ideally.”
Below the foam, there’s a sturdy coil base with reinforced construction that creates a slight bounce and another foam layer underneath. Coils also lend firmness for edge support, which is another plus. The springs also made changing positions and moving around in the bed easy.

The medium feel from a combination of springs and foam makes this a comfy choice for all sleep positions. Since all body types are different and have individual needs, it’s important to be aware that firmness isn’t customizable. Higher-weight stomach and back sleepers may want additional support. Also, lighter-weight side sleepers might want softer cushioning.

One of our testers was especially impressed by the Sapira Hybrid’s exceptional motion isolation. They were glad they didn’t need to worry about waking up their partner and could roll around on their side of the bed as much as needed. If you’re sleeping with a partner, this Leesa model could be right for you. Ultimately, the Sapira Hybrid’s construction strikes a nice balance between softness and pressure relief. However, this model may not be firm enough for higher-weight stomach and back sleepers when it comes to lower body support and spinal alignment.

Additional Information

There’s much to feel good about with the Leesa Sapira Hybrid mattress. It contains four layers of foam and one thick layer of wrapped springs—air circulation through the coil springs keeps it cool, and the foam layers provide ample pressure relief and support.

Our recommendation

Who may love it

  • Combination sleepers who want freedom of movement
  • People who need a responsive bed with good edge support for easy mobility
  • Average-weight and higher-weight side sleepers

Who may want to avoid it

  • Lighter-weight side sleepers may find it too firm on pressure points
  • Those with allergies and sensitivities to polyfoams
  • People sticking to a budget—look for promotions to avoid paying full price

Bottom line

When selecting the right mattress, test out the experience in person whenever possible. Take your time simulating the way you sleep, and consider motion transfer and edge support along with your favorite sleep position. Consider your body type or whether you have any pain, and look for a mattress that naturally aligns your spine. “Sleep deprivation can intensify pain while pain can also interfere with sleep, leading to a cycle of sleep deprivation and increased pain,” said Chester Wu, MD, double board certified in psychiatry and sleep medicine.

Overall, all three Leesa mattress models we tested had good motion isolation and scored high on comfort, pressure relief, and support. They also can accommodate most sleep styles. Keep in mind that the Leesa Original is all memory foam, making it softer and more cradling than the other two hybrid models.

Frequently asked questions

There’s no definitive answer as to how long any mattress should last. An average mattress may last a decade, so it’s recommended to replace it roughly every 10 years [3] Johns Hopkins Medicine. Choosing The Right Mattress: Making a Smart Investment. . For additional assurance, Leesa offers a 10-year warranty for all their mattresses.

Every Leesa model is different. Research shows that a medium-firm mattress is recommended for back pain, depending on your weight and body type [4] Radwan A, et al. Effect of Different Mattress Designs on Promoting Sleep Quality, Pain Reduction, and Spinal Alignment in Adults With or Without Back Pain; Systematic Review of Controlled Trials. Sleep Health . If possible, we advise testing out a mattress in person to see if you experience twinges of pain or discomfort before making your choice. Consider one of Leesa’s hybrid models, such as the Legend Hybrid, which has an extra support layer made of springs and foam.

Leesa is an eco-conscious brand that manufactures mattresses from organic and recycled materials like poly foam and springs. Their products come with free delivery in a box.

Leesa is more affordable than Tempur-Pedic. It’s also GREENGUARD Gold certified for low VOCs. Tempur-Pedic is known for retaining heat in its synthetic foams and for having off-gassing issues, while Leesa offers hybrid options with coils and aerated foam layers for better cooling and airflow.
