The Luna II CPAP machine is available for both CPAP and auto PAP (APAP) therapy. CPAP therapy delivers air at a consistent pressure to keep your airway open to help you breathe while you sleep. APAP is similar, but it automatically adjusts the air pressure to your breathing. CPAP pressure and APAP pressure ranges are determined by your doctor and detailed in your prescription. This device also features Luna RESlex expiratory pressure relief, a feature that reduces pressure when you exhale to make CPAP therapy more comfortable.

The Luna II model has an integrated heated humidifier, which helps prevent airway dryness and irritation. Warmed air is typically more comfortable to breathe during CPAP treatment than cool or room temperature air. The device includes a 60-minute ramp time, meaning it takes 60 minutes for your device to fully increase the pressure to your prescribed level. Pressure ramp can make it more comfortable to fall asleep, especially if you’re a new CPAP user. Both versions of the Luna II are compatible with most CPAP masks. The Luna II also has an “Auto On” function that starts your therapy as soon as the device detects your breathing, and an “Auto Off” feature that will turn off your breathing therapy when you remove the mask. “Auto On” is always enabled, but your doctor or equipment supplier will need to enable the “Auto Off” function if your prescription allows it.

The Luna II can connect to Wi-Fi and cellular networks to share your treatment data with your equipment supplier or doctor. You can also see treatment data and sleep reports by scanning a QR code shown on your device’s screen after each treatment. To use the QR code, you need to download the 3B Luna QR app on your Android or Apple phone. You can also directly access information and sleep statistics from your device on the color LCD display using the navigation dial on the front of the device.

Drawbacks

The 3B Luna QR app sounds like a helpful feature, but it has bad reviews. In the Apple App Store, the app has an average rating of 1.3 out of 5 stars. Unless you’re interested in your nightly sleep reports, you may be better off sticking with the reports that are sent to your doctor or CPAP supplier from the device.

The Luna G3 CPAP is a few inches smaller than the Luna II, so it fits better on small nightstands and bedside tables. Like the Luna II, the Luna G3 is available in CPAP and APAP models and can be connected to Wi-Fi and cellular networks. It includes heated humidification with heated tubing, which controls airflow temperature to prevent rainout (the collection of water in your tubing and mask). The preheat feature allows you to warm the water before starting your therapy, so that when you begin your CPAP treatment you’re breathing warm, temperature-controlled air.

The Luna G3 is slightly quieter than the Luna II, which means there’s less chance that it will disturb you or your partner during sleep. Similar to the Luna II, it is compatible with most CPAP masks and contains “Auto On” and “Auto Off” functions, an exhalation relief function, and it is compatible with the Luna QR app. This model also has auto-ramp capability, which senses when you fall asleep based on your breathing and then gradually increases the pressure to your prescribed level.

Drawbacks

As a newer model, retailer sale and promotional pricing for the Luna G3 is typically higher than the Luna II. In addition to CPAP and APAP, the Luna G3 BiLevel 25A offers BiPAP therapy. It includes two BiPAP settings: S and AutoS modes. These bilevel modes increase pressure when you begin to inhale and decrease pressure when you begin to exhale. Both inhalation and exhalation pressures are preset by your doctor or equipment supplier according to your prescription. AutoS mode is similar to S mode because it provides different pressures for inhalation and exhalation, but AutoS mode automatically adjusts the pressures according to your breathing pressure. Your doctor will determine the appropriate range for pressures in AutoS mode, and both inhalation and exhalation pressures will always stay within the prescribed range.

The Luna G3 BiLevel 25A also features an adjustable rise time, which means your doctor can adjust the time it takes to switch between inhalation pressure and exhalation pressure. The ideal rise time for your BiPAP therapy will depend on your breathing rate and pattern. The machine includes “Auto On” and “Auto Off” functions that automatically start and stop therapy when the machine senses breathing or when you remove your mask.

Luna G3 bilevel devices have many of the same features as other Luna CPAP machines. A 60-minute ramp time gives you 60 minutes to fall asleep while the machine gradually increases pressure to your prescribed level. The machine has heated humidification and tubing, which can help reduce airway dryness, and a preheat function warms your water and tubing while you get ready for bed. The humidifier uses a simple push mechanism for easy removal.

This device has both cellular and Wi-Fi capability to send and receive treatment data from your doctor and equipment supplier. The Luna G3 BiLevel ST 30Vt includes all of the same functions as the 25A, as well as a setting for users with shallow breathing and more advanced cases of sleep apnea called S/T mode. With S/T mode, the device senses your inhalation and exhalation, and increases and decreases pressure accordingly. In S/T mode, inhalation time is preset, and after that time the device automatically decreases pressure for exhalation. It controls inhalation and exhalation time according to settings determined by your doctor.

The inhalation time setting is important if you take short or shallow breaths because the device can increase inhalation time to help improve oxygenation as you breathe. If the device does not sense inhalation within a time set by your doctor, it will automatically start an inhalation and exhalation cycle. This device has eight levels of sensitivity for detecting inhalation and exhalation, so your doctor can fine-tune the sensitivity to detect very weak breathing.

Like the other Luna PAP devices, the ST 30VT includes heated humidification and tubing, and a preheat feature. Preheating your humidification before treatment can increase your comfort and prevent airway irritation. The heated tubing includes auto humidity control, which adjusts humidity levels in the tubing to prevent rainout ⓘWhen heated and humidified air cools inside CPAP tubing, the moisture condenses and collects around your mask as droplets of water, leaving you with a damp or wet face.. What is the difference between CPAP and BiPaP?

The main difference between CPAP and BiPAP devices is the type of airway pressure they deliver. CPAP devices provide consistent pressure during both inhalation and exhalation, while BiPAP devices deliver different pressures during inhalation and exhalation. BiPAP therapy may be prescribed instead of CPAP therapy for combined central and obstructive sleep apneas, or sleep apnea that is a result of neuromuscular diseases or central nervous system diseases.1 BiPAP may also be used for people with sleep apnea who are otherwise intolerant of CPAP therapy. Similarly, an oxygen concentrator is different from both CPAP and BIPAP machines, although their names oftentimes get confused. In order to best fit your needs, these are available as portable oxygen concentrators or home oxygen concentrators. Your doctor will determine which type of device you need, as well as the air pressures required to treat your specific condition.

What types of masks can you use with Luna devices?

All Luna devices are compatible with all masks, which is great. Helping people understand the importance of finding a well-fitting (so no leakage) and comfortable mask is critical to successful treatment of sleep apnea and other conditions. Does insurance or Medicare cover Luna CPAP machines?

Insurance coverage varies depending on your individual provider and plan, but most insurance plans do offer some coverage for medically prescribed CPAP machines, as well as related equipment like CPAP masks.2 Many insurance plans will mirror the coverage provided by Medicare, which technically covers devices on a rent-to-own basis and begins with a three-month trial.3 After the initial three months, Medicare will require documentation stating that you have used your device consistently and as prescribed, and that your CPAP therapy is helping your condition. This information can be obtained from your device by your doctor or device supplier. After this confirmation, Medicare will continue to cover the cost to rent your device for a total of 13 months, after which you will own your CPAP machine.

How can I pay for Luna CPAP machines?

If you do not have insurance, do not qualify for insurance coverage, or need to cover some of the cost of your CPAP device, there may be other options to help you pay.

Retailer financing: Retailers sometimes offer financing for CPAP machines and accessories through third-party financing companies like Affirm and Bread Pay. These companies offer plans with different repayment terms and interest rates, which depend on your credit score and the cost of the device you purchase. Some retailers even have in-house financing options and payment plans that do not involve a credit check.

Health savings account (HSA) and flexible spending account (FSA): These accounts are used similarly but have somewhat different details. An HSA is an account for pre-tax money to be set aside for eligible health expenses, and deposited funds do not expire.4 An FSA is an employer-maintained account that also acts as a pre-tax savings account for reimbursement of certain expenses, but must be used up each year.5 CPAP machines and accessories are qualifying purchases for both HSA and FSA accounts.

CareCredit: CareCredit is a credit card for health care expenses, including CPAP machines and accompanying items like CPAP masks. CareCredit is only valid at participating retailers, and eligibility for the card is subject to credit approval.

Luna CPAP warranty, maintenance, and care

In order to maximize the life and effectiveness of your Luna PAP device, it must be regularly and properly cleaned. CPAP systems can have buildup of minerals and other impurities, and humidifiers can be a significant source of bacterial growth due to the warm, humid environment.

It is recommended that you fully disassemble your tubing, mask, and humidification components for cleaning every day. Avoid harsh chemicals by cleaning CPAP and BiPAP devices with warm water and either vinegar or mild soap, and drying completely before the next use.

CPAP recalls

In June 2021, Philips issued a recall of many of its CPAP, BiPAP, and ventilator devices that were manufactured between 2009 and April 26, 2021.6 The recall was due to a foam used in the devices that was found to be susceptible to breakdown. Some foam particles could end up in the breathing systems and tubing. The foam is not meant to be inhaled and causes a potential health hazard to users. The FDA issued a list of affected models, which took most of Philips Respironics’ PAP devices off the market.7

As a result of the Philips recall, combined with pandemic-related device shortages due to manufacturing and supply backups, 3B Medical (now React Health) increased production and distribution of its PAP devices to meet consumer demand.
