The opioid epidemic is impacting every community across the country. Older adults are particularly hard hit for a number of reasons. This session provides an update on opioid use in older adults, explain what opioids are and are not, and describe different types of users, including those with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). Lessons learned from the Chronic Pain Self-Management Program as a strategy to manage pain and reduce opioid dependence are shared. The National Pain Strategy, the Administration for Community Living’s issue brief, titled “The Opioid Public Health Emergency and Older Adults,” and the role of the aging network in addressing this public health problem are discussed.
