Issue Brief 6: Depression and Anxiety: Screening and Intervention

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and Administration on Aging (AoA) commissioned a series of Issue Briefs to address behavioral health issues that are important to older Americans. The Issue Briefs identify key information and opportunities for action that can improve the lives of older people. This Issue Brief is intended to help health care and social service organizations develop strategies to serve older adults with depression and anxiety, by providing: (1) Information on the prevalence, risk factors, and impact of depression and anxiety in older adults; (2) Recommendations on screening, assessment, and early intervention and treatment strategies; and (3) Recommendations and Resources to help aging services, behavioral health, and primary care providers develop effective depression and anxiety services for older adults.
