Arlington, VA – The following is a statement from James Firman, NCOA President and CEO, on passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act:
“Since 1950, the National Council on Aging has advocated for public policies that support every American’s right to age with dignity, security, and independence. The tax bill enacted today does little to support this aim, instead threatening the very foundation that citizens rely on as they grow older.
“In passing a bill that adds over $1 trillion to the federal deficit, Congress has made it clear that it is on a path to undermine foundational health and economic security programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and the Older Americans Act. With the nation’s population of older adults growing, this is a fiscally irresponsible approach for today’s American families—and future generations.
“NCOA will continue to be a fierce advocate for protecting and strengthening these critical programs that improve the lives of millions of older Americans every day.”
The National Council on Aging (NCOA) is the national voice for every person’s right to age well. NCOA empowers individuals with trusted solutions to improve their own health and economic security—and protects and strengthens federal programs that people depend on as they age. Working with a nationwide network of partners and directly with individuals, NCOA’s goal is to improve the lives of 10 million older adults by 2020. Learn more at ncoa.org and @NCOAging.
