Award-winning leader joins NCOA staff

Nationally known business and thought leader Anna Maria Chávez recently joined NCOA as Chief Strategy Officer and Senior Vice President for External Affairs. As a key member of NCOA’s executive leadership team, she will oversee policy and advocacy, marketing and communications, fund development and strategic partnership development, and community networks. Most recently, Chávez served as CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA.

FY18 federal budget details emerging

Final FY17 appropriations were signed into law late last month, providing level funding for falls prevention and Chronic Disease Self-Management Education (CDSME). In the coming month, two significant FY18 budget proposals are scheduled to be released. The Administration’s detailed budget request is expected on May 23, and the House of Representatives is planning to consider its budget blueprint in June. Check the NCOA blog to find analyses of how these proposals may affect healthy aging programs and other services for seniors.

NCOA seeks improvements to the Chronic Care Act

The Senate Finance Committee held a hearing yesterday on S. 870, the Creating High-Quality Results and Outcomes Necessary to Improve Chronic (CHRONIC) Care Act. The committee is expected to pass the bill tomorrow. NCOA continues to pursue improvements to the bill that would increase access to evidence-based community and online programs, such as CDSME, and strengthen the annual Medicare Wellness Visit and chronic care management quality standards.

Take action to manage arthritis and prevent falls

The risk of developing arthritis increases with age: nearly half of Americans 65 and older suffer from the disease. People with arthritis commonly experience pain, struggle to complete daily activities, and are 30% more likely to fall. NCOA has partnered with the National Recreation and Park Association to increase awareness about programs and resources to help manage the limitations caused by arthritis, including physical activity, chronic disease self-management education, and fall prevention programs.
