The Cloverlane Foam Premium Plush mattress was slightly more firm than our testers expected. The mattress had great motion isolation, making it good for couples, but the memory foam created a sinking feeling that made it difficult to quickly change positions.

Our expert take on the Cloverlane 15” Foam Premium Plush mattress

The Cloverlane Foam is a pure memory foam mattress that starts with a base of 9-inch-thick CertiPUR-US Certified foam for support. The Certi-Pur US certification means that the foam is guaranteed to be free from potentially hazardous materials like lead, mercury, formaldehyde, or toxins.

The base is followed by a 2.5-inch-thick foam layer designed to distribute body weight evenly and absorb motion. A half-inch-thick latex strip sits on top of this layer to provide lower back support. Finally, the mattress is topped with a 2-inch-thick gel-infused memory foam layer to relieve pressure and a soft foam topper designed to wick away heat and body moisture.

The mattress is wrapped with 16 air vents designed to boost air flow and breathability. It also has handles to make moving the mattress easier, although all Cloverlane mattresses come with free in-home setup. If you need to move the mattress once it’s been delivered and set up, we do not recommend trying to move it alone, especially if you have pain or limited mobility. Always seek help.

The Cloverlane Foam Premium Plush mattress comes in three different firmness levels: luxury firm, medium, and plush. We tested the premium plush version and found it slightly firmer than expected. Cloverlane gives the mattress a firmness rating of four out of 10, with one being the softest and 10 being the firmest. But we found the Foam Plush slightly firmer than this estimate and ranked it at five out of 10, more of a medium firmness rating.

Cloverlane mattresses also feature a hybrid version, which replaces the foam base with an innerspring one, but we tested the pure memory foam version.

The textured surface of the Cloverlane Foam Premium Plush mattress
The surface of the mattress has a bumpy texture that testers found difficult to move around on.

Our tester on the Cloverlane Foam Plush mattress:

We had both a younger adult and an older adult assess the Cloverlane Foam Plush mattress.

The Cloverlane’s all-foam construction provided a hugging effect, which grew more intense the longer our testers remained in the same position. The lack of innersprings also meant that the mattress didn’t offer much bounciness to aid movement.

This combination of factors made it more difficult for our older adult tester to change positions. They had to exert more effort to sit up or roll over, which is less than ideal for people with mobility challenges.

Our older adult tester also disliked the top layer of the mattress. While the top layer isn’t a true fabric quilted cover, like a hybrid or innerspring mattress, it features divets in the foam that resemble a quilted texture. This textured surface created friction against our tester’s body, and the soft foam sometimes made them feel “stuck” in one position.

Our tester on the Cloverlane:

“The bottom layer of the mattress responds quickly, but the top is slow. It was difficult for me to flip over onto my side due to the surface material friction. I was sinking into the mattress.”

That said, our younger adult tester found it easier to change positions on the mattress, meaning that adults without mobility concerns may find the Cloverlane Foam Premium Plush mattress better suited to their needs.

Customer reviews

Cloverlane has 120 reviews on its website and the Foam Plush mattress has a five out of five star rating, although some reviewers purchased different firmness levels or the hybrid version of the mattress. That said, many reviewers mention Cloverlane’s free white-glove delivery and customer service as a high point of shopping with the brand.

“Right from delivery, the white glove installation service was top-notch. The team was professional, punctual, and took great care in setting up the mattress in my bedroom, ensuring it was perfectly placed and ready to use.”

Is Cloverlane right for you?

The best mattress for you will depend on a number of factors, like your sleep position and body weight. Here’s how the Cloverlane performed on each of the following criteria.

Sleeping Position

There are hundreds of mattresses that cater to specific sleep positions as well as individual preferences, which is why it’s challenging to choose the right mattress. “Sleeping position can make a difference in terms of perceived comfort of the mattress,” said Teresa Denike, founder of Sleep Better NYC.

For example, Denike explained that side sleepers may prefer a medium-firm mattress to support the body, while still offering enough cushion to relieve pressure in the joints. She added that stomach sleepers may prefer a slightly firmer mattress to keep them afloat.

Here’s how the Cloverlane Foam Premium Plush compared in different sleep positions:

Body Weight

Your overall body weight may also impact the type of mattress you prefer. For example, lighter-weight people, who weigh 130 pounds or less, may want a softer mattress, while higher-weight sleepers, who weigh 250 pounds or more, typically need a mattress with more support and firmness.

Our testers think that the Cloverlane Foam Premium Plush would work well for lighter-weight and average-weight sleepers. But, heavy sleepers will likely find the plush firmness level too soft.

Pain Relief

Many people shop for a new mattress to help with pain. “For older adults experiencing joint pain, arthritis, or other discomforts, a mattress with effective pressure-relieving properties is crucial,” said Kubanych Takyrbashev, MD, health and wellness advisor at NAO

The Cloverlane mattress ranked high on pressure relief, due to the memory foam layers. And though the brand ranks the Premium Plush a four on the fitness scale, our testers found it to be closer to a true medium firmness rating (6.5/10), and research indicates that medium-firm mattresses are the best mattresses for back pain

Couples

If you sleep with another person, you may want a mattress that isolates motion. You’ll be less likely to wake your partner when you change positions or make a late-night bathroom run.

Since the Cloverlane Plush is made with memory foam, it scored high on motion isolation during our testing. Our tester assessed this by setting a glass of water on one side of the mattress, then sitting down on the other side and moving around. The glass barely moved and the water didn’t spill. This degree of motion isolation makes the Cloverlane Plush a good mattress for couples in our book.

Aging

A mattress with good edge support is an important factor for aging adults who need security when getting in and out of bed or when sitting at the edge to stand up or tie their shoes. According to Takyrbashev, the best mattresses for older adults have good edge support. “This ensures the mattress maintains its stability and firmness along the edges, essential for safely sitting on the side of the bed or getting in and out,” he explained.

When our testers lay close to the edge of the mattress or dangled an arm off the side, they still felt sturdy. But sitting on the edge of the Cloverlane Foam Plush mattress did lead to a “sinking” feeling.

A tester sits on the edge of the mattress to see how supported they feel.

“The edge feels protective when you’re on the bed, but when you’re sitting in one spot and concentrating your weight, it sinks considerably. That can make it difficult for older adults to get out of bed.”

– From our tester

That said, the height of the mattress did make it easier for our tester to “slide” off the bed into a standing position, allowing them to spend minimal time sitting at the edge. Plus, we appreciate that all Cloverlane mattresses come with free mattress removal and in-home setup, which is ideal for adults who have trouble lifting or moving heavy objects.

Bottom line

Our testers found the Cloverlane Foam Plush mattress to be a mixed bag. On one hand, it offered a medium-firm surface with good pressure relief, and the excellent motion isolation may work well for couples. On the other hand, the soft foam and textured mattress cover made it somewhat harder for our older adult tester to change positions and get in and out of bed. So it may not be the best mattress pick for combination sleepers or those with limited mobility.

But the Cloverlane mattress does come in two more firmness levels and a hybrid version, which might offer more support or bounciness for mobility. You might also consider mattresses that scored better for combination sleepers during our testing, such as the Saatva Classic and Helix Midnight Luxe.

Frequently asked questions

The difference between the Cloverlane memory foam and hybrid models lies in their construction. The hybrid version contains a base with wrapped coils, while the memory foam version has a foam base.

Our testers feel the Cloverlane Foam Plush may be better for younger adults or those with a greater range of mobility, since our older adult tester experienced issues with moving around on top of the foam.

We also think couples may enjoy the motion isolation, while those with back pain may appreciate the medium-firmness level and added latex lower back support.

Yes, Cloverlane offers free white glove delivery on all their mattresses and bed frames.
