The FY11 budget was a direct blow to vulnerable older adults who are struggling with housing needs.

The bill eliminated funding for Housing Counseling and cut the Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program by 51%.

Housing Counseling, which includes federally mandated reverse mortgage counseling, is a critical service that helps older homeowners explore whether a reverse mortgage could help them stay in their home longer. It also provides information about other options, services, and benefits to help seniors stay independent.

The Section 202 program serves primarily older women in their 70s who have incomes of just $10,000 and who need help with daily activities. Cuts in this program could force residents into homelessness, institutions, or substandard housing.
