June 10, 2013

May marked the 50th anniversary of Older Americans Month. What did senior centers do to celebrate? Read about two NISC members’ activities:

Senior Prom

Senior Citizens Inc. of Delaware County, OH

Each year, we invite seniors to take part in a Senior Prom. It is a full dinner served by high school students and includes a live band in a wonderful building we are able to turn into a nightclub atmosphere.

Dinner is served at 5 p.m., and dancing starts at 6 p.m. Funding for this project is through local sponsorships and sale of tickets. Our attendance is 325 people.

The American Legion in the area was honored for the Memorial Garden they installed in front of our building, and they allowed us to sell memorial bricks to make upgrades in our building.

Unleash the Power of Age Float

Bellingham Senior Activity Center, WA

Our community has an annual "Ski to Sea" race and parade on Memorial Day weekend. This year, on May 25, the Bellingham Senior Activity Center had an "Unleash the Power of Age" float in the the parade. We had a band, comprised of senior center members and other community members, on the float playing jazzy songs to remind our community the power of age!

This was the first year that the senior center participated in the parade, and we were very excited to show the rest of our community who we are and what we do. We also offered a community breakfast prior to the parade.

Our goal was to increase awareness for the Bellingham Senior Activity Center and for our umbrella organization, Whatcom Council on Aging. WCOA offers congregate meals for seniors at 13 sites in two counties, as well as the Meals on Wheels program.

I

want to live in a country where

older adults don't have to worry about their senior center being closed.
