Maryland Falls Prevention Advisory Group

History of the Maryland Falls Prevention Advisory Group:
Members of the Maryland Fall Prevention Advisory Group have been invested in fall prevention for many years; however, the Group was formalized in July of 2009. Most of the membership is also part of the Partnership for a Safer Maryland, the state’s Injury Community Planning Group (ICPG) through the CDC funded Core Injury Prevention Program at the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Organizations that took the lead in developing the Maryland Falls Prevention Advisory Group:  
Charter organizations of this coalition include the following: Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Maryland Department of Aging, American Physical Therapy Association of Maryland, Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States, Injured Worker Insurance Fund, Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems, Maryland Safe Kids Coalition, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue, Baltimore County Health Department, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, Howard County Office on Aging, and the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.

Goals and objectives of the Maryland Falls Prevention Advisory Group:  
The Group’s overarching goal is to reduce falls and fall related injuries among priority populations to improve quality of life. In its strategic plan, the Group will outline awareness and prevention strategies to prevent falls across the lifespan.  The Group plans to assess fall prevention initiatives throughout the state and develop ways to support these programs.

Funding of the Maryland Falls Prevention Advisory Group:
The Coalition currently operates on in-kind contributions by member organizations. The group is actively pursuing funding to support implementation of its strategic plan.

Leadership structure and function of the Maryland Falls Prevention Advisory Group:
This Coalition was formed under the umbrella of the Partnership for a Safer Maryland. The team leader is Jade Leung, from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

At this time, the coalition does not have subcommittees.

  • Funds to support activities

  • Developed a strategic plan draft to address falls among Older Adults
  • Coordinates the statewide Fall Prevention Awareness Week in September each year in Maryland
  • Participated in a statewide Task Force to develop a Fall Prevention Protocol that was submitted to the Maryland General Assembly in December 2012
