Million Hearts®

Million Hearts® is a national initiative to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. Million Hearts® brings together a number of programs, policies, and campaigns designed to make a positive impact across the spectrum of prevention and care, including the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program and the Diabetes Self-Management Program.

In conjunction with the Million Hearts® Campaign, NCOA collected the following testimonials from self-management program participants who have hypertension or heart disease. Learn more about Million Hearts®.

Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshop Testimonials

  • Ana Arroyo of Texas heard about the CDSMP workshop through her doctor, who recommended she could learn how to control her diabetes, hypertension and medications:  “I’ve learned how to handle stress and now my blood pressure is lower and my cholesterol is coming down.  I’ve learned that exercise keeps your numbers down. I attend water aerobics and do yoga once a week. I also try to walk when I can. My pharmacist was very impressed that I know what medications I’m taking and for what.”
  • Janet from Washington shared that after a stroke the workshop helped her “become who I wanted to be and to take control of my health problems.” According to Janet “my blood pressure is now normal…the group gave me the steps to make life changing decisions. They could not do the work for me, but made sure I had the tools and ideas to make the changes to save myself—an incredible journey.”
  • Brenda Marsh a recent CDSMP participant, shares her story: “I learned about the program from my doctor. I have heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, and weight and lung problems. Through this workshop, I learned skills including pain control exercise, stress control and relaxation. Now I am doing water aerobics and I relax for ½ hour every night. I’ve been watching my carbs and I go to the cardiologist every month. Now when I go, I make a note of what I want to ask the doctor and I know my medications.”

Diabetes Self-Management Workshop Testimonials

  • Ruth from LaSalle-Peru, Illinois explained that the workshop helped her feel control after she experienced a heart attack: “The group, the sharing and it helps you realize that you are not alone in the way you feel things. Helping to acknowledge and take control the changes that are being experienced. She went on to share that the class gave her “Insight and control over where I am at this stage of my life.”
  • After suffering from heart disease Don from Kankakee, Illinois found a way to “confront the problem and solve it”. The class also made him “more aware of health articles, and I read just about everything in front of me that has to do with health.”
