Pack Your Bag and Prescription for Better Health Awards
Many older adults take multiple medications and can be at risk for adverse drug interactions. To help them manage their medications safely, CVS/pharmacy and NCOA launched the Pack Your Bag community outreach program.
Senior centers across the country host events where older adults can pack a bag with their prescription and over-the-counter medications and dietary supplements for a comprehensive review in one-on-one consultations with a local CVS pharmacist. The program also includes a presentation by the pharmacist on improving health through medication compliance.
In over 4,000 Pack Your Bag™ consultations since the program's inception in 2008, CVS pharmacists have found:
- 7% of seniors were taking expired medications.
- 15% were not taking medications as prescribed.
- 10% were at risk for potential drug interactions.
- 15% had the opportunity to switch to money-saving generics.
CVS/pharmacy and NCOA also sponsor the annual Prescription for Better Health Awards to highlight senior center programming that promotes a healthy lifestyle for older adults.
