For nearly 50 years, the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) has helped unemployed, low-income older adults gain skills and training to re-enter the workforce. NCOA is a national SCSEP sponsor funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, and last year helped 4,600 mature workers find job training and placement.

Here, one of those participants, Ed Reilley, describes his experience with the program and how it led to full-time employment:

I am a former client of NCOA. I first walked into your offices in Nashville back in 2010. I was demoralized and desperate, having not been able to find a job over several months. After some basic training with a computer I was placed with Project Return. Several months later I transferred to Urban Housing Solutions (UHS) because of my extensive construction experience.

The medical benefits afforded me by NCOA enabled me to have a very serious heart condition detected and treated, most assuredly saving my life.

While interning with UHS, with NCOA assistance, I was able to take a project management class online with Nashville Community College, which enabled me to perform my duties with UHS much better and increased my value, not to mention self-esteem.

In December 2010 I was hired full-time with UHS as an assistant construction manager and completed the rehabilitation of over 100 housing units in several apartment complexes. By October 2013 I was promoted to construction and facility manager, continuing to oversee construction projects as well as all major capital improvements for UHS.

Suffice it to say that NCOA has been literally a lifesaving as well as a quality of life improving experience. Thank you so much for all you have done for me personally and those I’m sure you continue to help.

--Ed Reilley, Construction and Facilities Manager, Urban Housing Solutions, Inc.
