LIS Resource Amounts Increased for 2013

November 6, 2012

The resource amounts for the Part D low-income subsidy (LIS)/Extra Help program have been increased for 2013. Starting January 1, the new amounts are $8,580 if single ($13,620 if married) for full LIS, and $13,300 if single ($26,580 if married) for partial LIS. These amounts include the $1,500 burial fund allowance. Other people automatically qualify for the LIS/Extra Help subsidy based on receiving Medicaid or one of the Medicare Savings Programs.

Keep in mind the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) requires resource levels for the Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs) to have the same basic resource levels as LIS. Therefore, the MSP resource test for 2013 is $7,080 if single ($10,620 if married) (amounts do not include burial allowance), unless your state has already increased your MSP asset tests or eliminated them altogether.
