Saving Money and a Life

November 19, 2012

MIPPA grantees provide more than counseling on Medicare coverage and benefits. Thanks to their promotion of wellness and preventive services, one woman in South Dakota was able to access care that ended up literally being a lifesaver.

In Mobridge, SD, a very rural area, the Senior Health Information & Insurance Education (SHIINE) conducted a joint outreach event with the Adult Services and Aging (ASA) Ombudsman, Title III Nutrition, Title III Caregiver, and Adult Day and Adult Protective Services (APS) programs. It was there that a woman pulled the nutrition specialist aside and said she wanted to talk to the group from ASA and SHIINE before they left.

Because of the outreach and education efforts SHIINE counselors and volunteers have been doing regarding the annual Medicare wellness visit and the importance of using the preventive benefits, the woman went to her doctor and received a mammogram. Upon examination, the doctor found breast cancer in the early stages. They were able to remove the lump and the woman is now cancer free.

The woman told the counselors that she and her husband had moved to the area from another state to build their dream retirement home. Now they are now able to fulfill their dreams and enjoy it together. She was very grateful to the SHIINE program and she told them she credits SHIINE for saving her life.
