7 Resources for Free Outreach & Education Materials

September 2, 2013

The Center for Benefits often gets asked by counselors where can they find materials to use at outreach events, health fairs, conferences, and more. While anyone is welcome to download and reproduce any publication from NCOA’s website, limited resources mean that the majority of our publications are not available in bulk, print copies.

However, we have compiled this list of resources where one can go to request materials that may be helpful to your clients—whether they seek education about benefits, health insurance, financial security, or safety.

1. SNAP outreach and education

The USDA Food and Nutrition Service offers free education and outreach materials about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or Food Stamps); some of these items also are available in Spanish. Most of the materials include the national toll-free number; however, you may customize them with your own phone number by adding a sticker or a stamp. Note that there are differing quantity limitations for ordering print publications.

2. Consumer financial issues

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) offers resources to help consumers of all ages better understand their financial situation, avoid exploitation, and choose the right financial products to suit their needs. CFPB also has an Office on Older Americans looking specifically at this population. Bulk publications can be ordered online; topics that may be of interest to seniors include Money Smart for Older Adults: Avoiding Financial Exploitation and Considering a Reverse Mortgage.

3. Health Insurance Marketplace

If you assist older adults who may need to consider health insurance through the Marketplaces come October, you’ll want to visit this Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Marketplace publication page. Here you’ll find consumer-friendly brochures, fact sheets, and drop-in articles about the Marketplace.

4. Medicare

Most Medicare publications are available free for download or in electronic book formats. To get outreach and education materials in bulk, you’ll need to create an online account before placing your order.

5. Social Security programs and benefits

The Social Security Administration (SSA) offers a number of free publications about Medicare, Extra Help, the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, and more. Most are available as free audio and/or PDF files and in multiple languages. To order print copies, use the contact details in the bottom left menu of the SSA publication page.

6. Multi-language information on health care reform

AARP has created fact sheets in several languages that outline the basics of the Affordable Care Act and how the provisions relate to people with Medicare. Download them from the site or learn how to order print copies by emailing the address at the bottom of the web page.

7. Home safety information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

The CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention has numerous publications targeted toward keeping seniors healthy, including falls prevention posters and fact sheets, and fire safety brochures. Bulk publications can be ordered online in multiple languages.
