Crossing New Frontiers

One in six seniors living alone in the United States faces physical, cultural, and/or geographical barriers that prevent them from receiving benefits and services that can improve their economic security, and ability to live healthy, independent lives.

This issue brief describes the ways in which social and geographical isolation pose barriers to benefits access among older adults. By examining the main characteristics of the isolated population, this brief identifies new opportunities to improve and expand the outreach and enrollment efforts targeted at this population.
