Mr. Buddy's Story

At age 66, Mr. Buddy was in a desperate financial situation. His income was just $3,846 per year and he was quickly falling behind in rent for his trailer home in southern Alabama.

Because he was $600 behind in rent, Mr. Buddy had received a letter stating that if he did not pay soon, a padlock would be put on his trailer.

Luckily, he found NCOA’s BenefitsCheckUp® and help at the Baldwin Council on Aging and South Alabama Regional Planning Commission, both NCOA local partner organizations.

Mr. Buddy’s income totaled just $320.50 a month after he paid his Medicare premium out of his Social Security and Veterans Affairs benefits. That was nowhere near enough to pay for rent, food, and other necessities.

Counselors used NCOA’s BenefitsCheckUp® to help. Through the service, they found that Mr. Buddy was eligible for:

  • $263 per month in Supplemental Security Income benefits, or $3,156 per year.
  • $110.50 per month to pay his Medicare premium or $1,326 per year.
  • $17 per month to help pay for food or $204 annually.

The caseworker also was able to help Mr. Buddy qualify for $400 in back rent from a local charity.

In the end, Mr. Buddy’s annual income more than doubled from $3,846 to $8,532. Thanks to BenefitsCheckUp®, Mr. Buddy is now better able to meet his expenses, putting him on the path to economic security.
