Help a Senior Today

You can help more seniors like Ms. Guzman.

Ms. Guzman had difficulty affording food on her limited income, but didn’t realize she might be able to get help to buy her groceries.

When she came to the NCOA-funded Benefits Enrollment Center at Isabella Geriatric Center, it was to get help to fill out a form related to her Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit. SSI is her only source of income, providing just a few hundred dollars each month.

Several years earlier, Isabella had helped Ms. Guzman apply for two programs that help pay her Medicare costs—the Low Income Subsidy, which helps with prescription drug costs, and the Medicare Savings Program, which covers her Part B premiums.

This time, the Benefits Specialist at Isabella, Arisleida Jones, encouraged Ms. Guzman to complete an online BenefitsCheckUp® screening to see if she might be eligible for additional benefits.

Since 2001, BenefitsCheckUp® has assisted over 3 million people to find help paying for food, prescriptions, health care, household utilities, and more.

Ms. Guzman was thrilled to learn she was eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/Food Stamps). Jones assisted her with the application.

After a few weeks, Ms. Guzman returned to Isabella with a big smile, showing her SNAP letter of approval and new card. She was approved for $200 in food stamp benefits every month.

Ms. Guzman says that NCOA's Benefits Enrollment Center made a huge difference in her life by finding programs available to her, and assisting her with the applications, which enable her to stay healthy.

“The staff is knowledgeable, and their dedication and kindness made me feel welcome, important, and cared for," she said.

"Now I have peace of mind by having the security of $200 a month to buy food. Knowing I have Isabella Senior Resource Center in the community, and that I can count on them for my insurance and benefit needs, makes me very happy.”
